To be honest I was hoping for a "Funny" moderation, not an "Informative" moderation.
But with the tactics they used, I wouldn't be surprised if 60-70% of American households allowed "Inspection Teams" to enter and search around. Most people will not question anyone who looks like they have authority. Plus, with the school system the way it is, most people wouldn't know that they don't have the right to do a blank-check search of your house even if they were cops, with a warrant even.
I went to a show (local bands), and some guys were setting up a minidisc recorder to record the show, and I asked them about this, and they said that they had a way to get the raw data off of the disc in digital form, so it wasn't a big deal.
" A physically small, 1GB disc in a protective caddy. It's almost too good to be true."
It is too good to be true. If you carry them in your pocket, they get dust, dirt, and stuff in the disc, and you can't wipe it off, so it eventually jams up the player by fscking the lens and servos.
Their Magic Gate DRM simply doesn't let you make a digital copy of something that's already a digital copy (via Optical in/out). They only let you make one digital copy of an Analog source as well.
" Why not distribute them like AOL CDs on rewritable media? At least if the person isn't interested they can do something useful with their plastic."
Probably due to the incredible cost of that plan. It would cost millions that could be better spent fueling development. Maybe if AOL disks were a bootable distro with AOL, OpenOffice, and maybe some games, then you'd be in business.
"And these people aren't going to switch to linux. Didn't you see that 1% piece of the pie? I found suse and mandrake to seem a lot slower than windows xp on my p4 1.8 so I don't think on older pentium 2 hardware anyone's going to enjoy the performance of kde over windows 98. "
I have an interesting story. My brother's 466 Celeron was fucked up completely from spyware, so I said, let me put Red Hat 9 on it. He said ok. Later, he said he hated Linux, so I said, "I don't have a 98 disc, but you can try an XP Pro disc I have laying around." Windows XP is WAY snappier than Redhat! I was amazed, because I expected XP to CRAWL, and Redhat to run. And in addition, Redhat didn't work to well with the soundcard in there, but XP worked perfectly!
Schools get site licenses that are obviously discounted because they are an educational institution. My school got a site license for the MX studio for $500. They can legally install it on every computer for that price. Pretty good.
I read what the guy who did this said, and at theend, he says that with this out of the way, we are a few steps closer to getting Windows XP and such ported over. The guy does need help getting together some people who know Windows drivers and such to help him and is considering making this a sourceforge project.
But does that mater with an online distrobution model? They are not fighting for retail space. If there is a "highest-user rated" feature that picks the best games regardless, Indies will be able to get on roughly equal ground distribution-wise.
Infinium Labs, the creators of the Phantom gaming console, have a REALLY good plan to integrate Indies. Since games will be downloaded, and not sold in the retail chain, Infinium is allowing just about anyone to get a development kit. If your company makes a game, infinium will host it and give you 40% of the selling price for every unit purchased! That's a REALLY good idea!
"A minor sidenote: How on earth did he drill the holes in the side panels? They are definitely not pre-drilled as shown by the pattern of holes around the cutouts for the power button, CD drive, and USB hub."
It definitely looks like it was water-jetted, or laser cut. I am guessing waterjet, because it would be cheap to get something like this done. It's plastic, but takes a little bit of time to cut due to the number of holes.
The Phantom by Infinium Labs seeks to do this. The scope of it was originaly a console, but evolved into a DRM'd PC that will likely have PVR, Games by Download, Movies+Music by download, and much more. Fortunately, they avoided what you said by offering HDTV support as a substitute for VGA or DVI.
Yeah, my personal favorite is the Nikon, except I was talking to the dude at my photo store, and he was talking about Nikon dropping the "D" lenses in favor of "G", which I dislike due to lack of aperture ring. "G" lenses are not backwards compatible with MF Nikons, and my N80 doesn't like the manual lenses. So get those "D" lenses while you can, because they are the most compatible ones Nikon makes. I am still trying to muster the funds for the 24-120D lens.
It was shown in operation to any press who signed up for the demo. They had a party in a penthouse with the Phantom being demo'd.

This stuff's a one hit wonder!
(I'm surprised no one's posted that yet!)

Are you ready for RANDOM HOME INSPECTIONS!
The RIAA is Coming!

I thought it was: Statistics are like bikinis. They show you enough to get you interested, but hide the good stuff.
It's like in the original "Santa Clause" movie, the 1-800 number on the back of Santa's card was a sex-hotline.

....And a scary place to hang out when you are tripping on acid!

Yeah, there are actual shots of it in action, not just the renders that everyone complains about.

It's all worth it if you can set your laser printer to "stun".
Yeah, that's where I got the inspiration for mine, but mine is done differently. Mine implies a more direct endorsement.
Well never see ads like this or this.
I made them myself in Photoshop!

This guy is a mawd gawd! I have only seen one or two mods in my life that lived up to this guy's vision.
" sorry, my cable (comcast) sucks."
No, you went over your bandwidth limit for the month!
