Being at the opposite end of the year, summer is obviously going to be the low-point for sales. Consumers are spending their money on vacations and outdoor fun rather than game consoles.

my statement wasn't about the number of abandoned developments. i assumed there'll be more abandoned OSS than CSS, mainly due to that fact that not all CSS are publicised, especially a failed one. and honestly, not all OSS are good ones.

but that's not the point, i was actually talking about the ability for others to pick up a OSS and continue it. simply put, OSS may sleep, but it'll never die completely.

if no one picks it up, that probably means that particular software isn't worth nothing. this is by no mean the end of that software, it's been abandoned, by the source is still open, and maybe in another 50 years, this worthless abandoned source might become useful because of the change in our society.

So? That doesn't mean they'll kill Google. What will kill Google is if MS's search engine is better.

sometimes being better doesn't mean anything. Was IE better than Netscape during the browser war? or was it just because MS preinstalled IE in all Windows, and Windows happens to be one of the most used OS?

and nowadays, Opera, Mozilla etc must be better than IE? but are they taking over IE's market share?

  12. Re:Biggest threat is Microsoft on Beyond An Open Source Java · · Score: 1

the "Apache Public License" might be the only solution, ie Sun needs to control all the changes.

If there's another version of GPL as you suggested, then as i mentioned, MS couldn't care less to release the changes back to the community, as long as it has the modified copy in Windows.

in the simplest example, if Java is Open-Sourced in the normal GPL way, MS changed all wording of "Java" to "MS-Java" and release this improved version back to the community.

people can change "MS-Java" back to "Java" or just don't use this version. nobody cares.

however, what MS wants is to make sure all Windows have this MS-Java version preinstalled, so every time a Windows user needs to use Java, it's showing MS-Java all over the place, unless this Windows user downloads the true version of Java, which most people wouldn't bother.

  13. Biggest threat is Microsoft on Beyond An Open Source Java · · Score: 5, Interesting

in previous discussion, those opposed OpenSource Java suggested that with MS's domination today, MS can easily 'improvised' OSJava to become a run-on-windows-only-OS-Java (WOOSJAVA).

it doesn't matter if anyone else is going to benefit from/use/modify this WOOSJAVA, most likely it will just be preinstalled in all Windows shipped.

and regardless of what others may like to think, most consumers of MS will think that this WOOSJAVA is now the standard.

so in the end, maybe even Sun needs to write things to accomodate this WOOSJAVA in order to survive, that'll be ironic.

To accomplish this task, the thief places an electronic "skimmer" -- a card swipe device that reads the information on the card's magnetic strip -- on the ATM machine. Attached to the device, or placed discreetly elsewhere, is a small camera that captures the customer's PIN number when they enter it. The information is either collected by the device, or transmitted to a remote receiver. The thief then takes the codes and creates a counterfeit ATM card in order to empty the victim's bank account. Some skimmers can even capture the information and send it to the ATM at the same time. Since the machine works normally, the victim is unaware that they have just given a thief the key to their account. copied from here.
