I've had an iPhone for 6 months now. It's my favorite tech gadget in a very large stable of tech gadgets. Edge sucks. Every time I use it I have flashbacks to my dial up days.
You are actually the first user I've heard say that Edge is sufficient.
I've got no idea how you got modded insightful. You contradict yourself "Yes it is bad that an ISP charges by bandwidth." vs "They should be exploring new plans..."
Also, it's not that the high usage customers are being penalized, it's that the low usage customers are currently subsidizing the high usage customers. If it turns out that broadband should cost an average of $50 per customer (for the sake of this argument), then you have one of two options 1) Everyone pays $50 2) Low users pay less than $50 high users pay more than $50. Your option -- give low users a discount but don't penalize high users -- is illogical bordering idiotic. If you want to make the argument that the $50 already assumes high use, go right ahead. But please back it up with references.
"Starting with new code" He lost credibility with that statement. Having been a software engineer for over a decade, this guy sounds like a lot of product managers I've talked to that try to squeeze implementation details into product requirements. To that I say "piss off". You are free to criticize the performance, user experience, functionality, interface, whatever you want. Don't tell me what to do with my code.
1) More mercury enters the environment through the burning of fossil fuel to generate electricty than is contained in a CFL. 2) An old mercury thermometer has up to 100 times the mercury as a CFL. 3) Quit spreading FUD.
The response would be to ignore the study. Can you think of any other reason that alcohol is widely available and smoking a reefer can get me tossed in the clink?
"We only give a 14 day warranty" (You get 6 months for replacement/refund and retailer is liable for repairs for 6 years.
For the life of me, I can't imagine why manufactures don't rush to release new products to the UK. (wii, ps3, iphone etc etc)
As a firefox user that would definitely consider switching to Opera if presented with a valid argument, can the Opera fanboys please attach valid references when saying things like "Opera renders stuff in general near the top of the pack already", "perhaps the most standards compliant browser" and "Opera 9.x is one of the only stable browsers". This is especially hypocritical when criticizing the "FF Fans".
I can just imagine the journalist's process for choosing the CPI index.
1: prove correlation between OOXML support and terrorism. Unable to find any correlation.
1: (second try) prove correlation between OOXML support and stealing candy from babies. Unable to find any correlation.
1: (third try) prove correlation between OOXML support and CPI index. Correlation found.
2: write scientific sounding article about said correlation.
3: ?
4: profit!
Circuit City is monopolistic? Really? I think there is fantastic competition right now in the home electronics world. In fact, it's one of the few industries where you can get great service and good prices (hi newegg.com).

Let me guess, you work at Circuit City. In Ohio. And you're bored because you've got nothing to do now that you've been suspended for being a complete ass to a customer recently.
What could this guy have done to defuse the situation? Without knowing the details of how antagonistically he acted ("sorry sir, you don't have the right" vs "f**k you. I'm not opening my f**king bag") it seems that he reacted in a very reasonable manner to escalating hostility.
Actually, I used to work at Monster and they were very strict about this. They had several levels of spidering detection and prevention, both at the data level and iis request level. I'm curious how this bypassed those throttles.
smarter/average/dumb. You mean like the real world? I (and probably you too since you're on slashdot) haven't hung out or socialized with an "average" subset of the population since high school. I was in the science dept. of a decent university, got a job in software engineering. Live in Cambridge MA where it seems like everyone is doing a phd in something remarkable. My friends are brilliant and I've got a great social life. I don't miss the forced integration one bit.
Uh... I'm at work in Needham right now. I've also got Verizon DSL and a Verizon cellphone so I'd guess that this story is more relevant to me than almost anyone else on Slashdot. My questions is: if this doesn't matter to me, who does it matter to?
OK. I understand mistakes happen so I'm not going to flame you for this. But the idiots that modded you insightful should lose their modding privileges for a month. That's about 0.1% of a year.

The "Big Dig" in Boston is 3.5 miles and cost around $15,000,000,000. That's about 5 billion per mile. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dig_(Boston,_Massachusetts)/
Or, more succinctly: imagine a graph with two non-parallel lines.
slightly off topic, but this is the test you are talking about (on a different plane) Boeing 777 ultimate load test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Uo0C01Fwb8 Apparently they won't push the 787 to failure in the load test because of the cost of cleaning up the carbon dust that will result: http://www.xanga.com/AeroGo/614309885/787-nuts-bolts---bits.html

fourthded. I'm not even sure if Foxit is that awesome, but Adobe sure is trying hard to make it look that way.

Ever heard of e=mc2? According to your rational, that lint in your pocket is a walking time bomb.
Interesting that Apple shares are down 3.5% with this news. Was there a financial disclosure, or were investors expecting something different?

Plus it would be on your doorstep by noon tomorrow.

You think Mac-heads could do that?
Thanks for the excuse. I'll use that next time my girlfriend finds porn on my computer.
You paid for them with your high taxes. I'm all for usage fees rather than penalizing even the people that don't use the beach.
I just come for the articles.
