Well firstly, since Windows is more then just a kernel, just because the Dev kit has it does not mean Windows as a whole does. Secondly, Athalons, P4, Celerons and Xeons are all the same architecture, ia32. If you had used the P4 and say, Itanium or Opteron/A64 you would have a point, which is why I qualified the statement in the beginning with 'to a large extent.'

Its their computer, they can decide how you use it. If your job doesn't require you to change the system settings, its much easier to remove the ability instead of just trust you to do your work and it prevents problems due to mistakes. If its corporate policy to have a single screensaver and wallpaper, then you should be locked out of changing them, because I have never met someone who could be trusted not to change it after they were told not to if they could. Most workers think they can be trusted not to do the mundane things they were told not to, but time has told that they can't. Its not your system you just use it, so suck it up.

People buy consoled for the games, not the hardware, and there aren't any more loyal then those who wait for the next game in a popular franchise. Do you think that someone is going to go all the way to the CCIE level, without already having a job in the field? For one, the cost alone is going to turn everyone away except those who really need it. The MCSE and CCIE are two completely different beasts that you can not compare, and the reasons for getting them are different. If however you want to talk about the CCNA to the MCP, or possibly even MCSE to CCNP then you might have a better comparison, but even then your getting them for different reasons. You can get basic Cisco certs just as easy as the MCP without having any real experience in networking, but since its the MS certs that are looked upon by most as the one to get your foot in the door, most people go for that as their first, by the time they're looking at others, they either hate their job and won't waste the money, or they've had some experience and have learned from it.

A single plant would have little effect in a house or a small apartment since any window would let in far more crap then the plant cleaned up, and the 'psychological affect', is only there if you like plants, but then again, thats why you got it in the first place. Every house I've ever been in, new or old, has the walls painted with this butt ugly eggshell, therefore it does not need to be painted again for that reason, who still has that really off white. If you have kids, you have to be one cold hearted person not to put their school work or paintings on the refrigerator. Which of course leads to wall hangings, paintings, statuette and so on.

Secondly, everyone does stuff that is not of a functional nature, so saying anything bad or deogatory about someone elses hard work when obviouly they are quite proud of it simply because it didn't make it any faster is a little hypocritical. For instance ever painted a room or bought a plant? Did painting the room add any space or help you organize the room better? Did the plant clean up after you or remind you that you had things to do? They wern't very functional endevors now were they, but you did them anyways.
