Yes but even though OS9 was full of holes, a Mac was still seen as more secure then Windows because you heard of Windows bugs doing crap, not Mac problems.
It's not security through obscurity but what makes a better target. Right now, breaking OS X might get you bragging rights, but thats about it. More and more malware is written by people with financial goals, not to get the actual information on individual computers but as a stepping stone to something much better. Why go after individual CC numbers when you could use a poorly secured system as a spambot and 'legitimately' make money. Why get that one CC number when you could use that machine to get access to a database full of them. Both of those require a whole lot of compromised systems before you get lucky, something breaking OS X doesn't give you.
Unless you use and do nothing but the most simplest of things where a pad of paper and a pen would be a good replacement, no it is not simple or trivial.
The producer of 'An Inconvenient Truth' is accusing the National Science Teachers Association of being in the pocket of Big Oil because she can't get preferential treatment for her film
I never saw this coming. I'm shocked I say, SHOCKED!
When did the 'FOSS community' become an entity that could be analyzed as a single group so that you could point at it saying that's what's wrong with it?
With software steadily becoming more sophisticated, are more choices really necessarily better?
What does one have to do with the other? Choices are only good when all your options are simple? It's better to have one that works in a very complex, impressive manner then several that work better for different people?
Sorry for the rant, but this reflects on the society we are in today. Is it okay to ban someone without first investigating the cause?
When dealing with a private corp, yes. They do not need to investigate and can ban you from their service at any time with no cause, you have no right to use it. This is not the police or branch of the government, there is no burden of proof that has to be met. If your client matches a fingerprint that looks like you're cheating, you're gone and usually that's it.
Mass banning are normal for WoW and quite frankly they ban innocent people all the time. They don't care because it works in their favor. They sell another unit of client software and get great publicity about being 'hard' on cheaters and being the 'only' MMO doing something about it.
The only reason that they reversed this one is because every time they ban a whole group they start getting complaints form people banned for no cause. Those complaints got louder and louder. This move was to save face, not out of any real concern that they have for their playerbase.
He's not looking at the platform on its technical merits but on the hot air spit out by someone who's job is to spew hot air. It would be like choosing to run or not choosing to run Linux based on Linus statement that he thinks the BSD's are programed by morons. It has nothing to do with the ability of the platform
Of course a decent CIO should know that you can't trust Microsoft at all. this should be obvious from all the charred, burned-out corpses of former Microsoft "partners" littering the IT landscape.
There's a tiny difference between partnering with someone and simply using their product.
For Postgres, OTOH, you'll just need someone smart with general knowledge of SQL and of the platform it's going to be running on - he needn't even have used Postgres before.
That is a recipe for a poor performing database and a disaster. It doesn't matter what RDBMS you use, a database is a complex object and not something you can throw together and expect it to work right, if at all.
Well thank god Apple choose to use Linux to extend the NeXTStep base OS X uses then. OS X would have been a failure without Linux's massive marketing force behind it.
Little hint, when basing the next version of your Flagship product on another OSS project, it doesn't really matter if the base is really well known or not. In this case, Microsoft's name would be selling the product, not FreeBSD or Linux no matter which route they went with.
Want SMB volumes to mount on startup? If you're working in a Microsoft Active Directory network, make your Mac a member of the domain for single-sign-on authentication and many other features. Or make an LDAP domain if you have Linux servers and get it done.
Oh well, thats definitely the most intuitive, easiest way to do something isn't it. Just install and configure an LDAP directory. OP must be a complete moron for not seeing that.
Where is that option in the finder again? Oh wait, its not, as the OP said there is no way to have a SMB share or NFS export mounted at startup through the Finder. An ldap directory is not though the finder. Also, what if you don't have an Active Directory? Are you supposed to set one up just because the Mac has no feature like 'Map network drive' like windows Explorer?
I know of 3 ways to have network shares mounted at startup, your overly convoluted LDAP or NIS domain just to do something simple, aliases to the resources after mounting them once manually, or shell scripts. None of those ways can in any way be described as intuitive. For an OS that is marketed as 'plays with everyone' it makes playing well with others a giant pain in the ass.

You might, but I'm willing to bet the majority of Dells customers would neither like the option or have the ability to deal with options like installing their own OS.
Since Star Wars itself is hardly original, you do know that you can make this argument for just about every fantasy story or for that matter any story that involves 'good' vs 'evil.'

A computer is a tool to let you do things, it is not supposed to do thinking for you.
Is simply taking a bunch of existing ideas and throwing them together really R&D. D maybe but there was little to no R going on at Apple.
Just like nobody is interested in the Mail Merge or the advanced features of Office, right?

Wow. A few hundred years of evidence to the contrary and you're still so trusting.

Look under the Google 0.9 (an old google spider or a bot misreporting itself) msnbot 0.9
You're going to need to try harder, MS isn't testing a nonexistent OS.

Lowest common denominator.
What's really sad is a lot of recent grads won't understand either the math or the implication of that statement.
