Trying to delete something from the Internet is like trying to get pee out of a swimming pool. Best case scenario, you waste enough time and draw so much attention to yourself that the Streisand Effect ensues.

  7. Hell hath frozen over on J.J. Abrams To Direct Star Wars VII · · Score: 0

What could possibly make this better? Is George Lucas going to to consult, and add brief scenes of slapstick-style humor in between every shot? Or better yet, throw in a lead character that contributes absolutely nothing to the plot and is only there for comic relief, and who bares a striking resemblance to an Ebonic version of Roger Rabbit? How much do you wanna bet it's going to be a half-Vulcan, half-Tribble who sounds like Pikachu?

  8. Combine with Google Voice! on Messenger App Brings Free VoIP to US Facebook Users — At a Price · · Score: 0

There's an easy way to fix a bunch of these problems: Use Google Voice in the middle.

Firstly, GV is for all intensive purposes a mobile provider since it can receive text, so FB should have no problem letting you confirm it on your FB profile.

Second, you can easily configure your GV account to handle calls from FB in a certain manner, such as screen them, send them to VM, or forward them to another number of your choice.

Ooooooor you could just say "fuck Facebook" and use GoogleTalk and Google Voice by themselves!

  9. Fines? on Pirate Radio Station In Florida Jams Automotive Electronics · · Score: 0

I find it hard to believe that someone was running a pirate radio station in violation of FCC laws. As I recall, one can legally get a low-power transmitter of a maximum wattage and maximum of a 6 foot antenna, and that will easily broadcast a few miles, especially if at a good height. In all likelihood, something broke or became corroded, but it's hard to see why they'd just outright fine someone so much money for an honest mistake. Sadly, the story doesn't elaborate on anything remotely technical.

I think the parents should be strung up for naming their boys Braydon and Bryton! It's bad enough having people with the same initials under the same roof, but by doing that cutesy shit with the letter Y, you now have two boys whose names also are spelled and sound very alike.

Does anyone else miss games like Duke Nukem 3D, DOOM, Secret of Monkey Island, Super Mario Bros 3? Free roaming environments where you'd have to wander and explore and backtrack, find keys and powerups, kill bad guys, solve puzzles. So much good gameplay, and best of all, so much replayability. That's the biggest thing I hate about modern games: once you beat them, not as fun to do it again, and considering they cost TWICE as much as they used to, pretty big rip off.

I don't understand why anyone offended by something can't just not look at it. These people are going out of their way to look up something they consider offensive on the internet, and then get mad when it's there. I specifically don't go around Googling "pictures of sex-change surgeries gone wrong" because it bothers me. If I decided to, why would I get mad at the people in the pictures or the doctors who did it, or for that matter the site hosting the pictures? Shouldn't I feel stupid for looking up something that I know for a fact I don't want to see?

Also, why are they so pissed at the messenger instead of the creator of the content? Google went out of its way to censor this thing in their countries, what more do they want?

  18. Technically illegal on Nebraska Sheriff Wardriving, Sending Letters About Unsecured Wi-Fi · · Score: 0

I've always wanted to do this for people, just cruise around, find open access points, knock on their doors and offer to secure their network for $20. Only problem is that it's illegal, and technically extortion if you ask for money. But the illegal part is simply that you're connecting to their network unauthorized. The federal laws still on the books actually mandate that one must obtain express WRITTEN permission from someone BEFORE you connect to their network. I know, I know, this means anyone using free wifi at the coffee shop is breaking the law, so the practicalities of this do become quite grey. But this is THE LAW, and if a government official is technically breaking the law, even if it's for good intentions, there is still quite a problem here, they could easily get sued. It would be nice if this would prompt them to rewrite the law... but would make far too much sense, and as such, will never happen.

In the mean time I'll just check to see if their router's admin web interface is unsecure, and in the likely event that it is NOT, rename their SSID to "YOU SHOULD SECURE YOUR NETWORK," or if I'm feeling mean, something particularly racist or disgusting.

  21. It is likely illegal on Ask Slashdot: When Does Time Tracking at Work Go Too Far? · · Score: 0

Pretty sure this is illegal, or pushing it. I used to work at the Bresnan Communications call center in Billings, MT, and they once tried this same bullshit. Except the kicker is that they also mandated that we only got 20 minutes of bathroom break time PER WEEK. So if you happen to need to take a shit, or for that matter if you're a female, you're pretty fucked. Although since pretty much none of us could keep it under 20 minutes, even though we would sprint back and forth to the bathroom and gave up washing our hands, I never heard about anyone getting in much trouble for going over. It was likely just another metric they could hold over our head if they didn't like someone and wanted to axe them. But as I recall, after I left the company, they did get reprimanded for either this bathroom break rule, or the fact that they frequently forced their workers to work through ALL their breaks during the day, often making us sit at a computer for 12 hours STRAIGHT. Go find a local lawyer who specializes in labor laws, they might be verrrry interested in this.

Google did this to a far less invasive extent, they didn't even necessarily connect to open networks, just sniffed the airwaves for random information, and they got royally bitch-slapped for invading peoples' privacy.

Does this ruling mean that Google can get a refund for all those fines they had to pay? Or for that matter, does this mean that I personally can hop on my neighbor's open WAP, inventively named "linksys," and legally steal their packetses?
