  1. I got out of a ticket on Black Boxes In Cars Raise Privacy Concerns · · Score: 2

I was stopped by a full of attitude cop, for what he claimed was "speeding". Even though he had no radar gun, he claimed I was doing 50 in a 35mph zone. A lie, I was doing 35. I asked him how he determined that and he said he "paced" me. He was nosing around trying to find something to charge me with, when I said, well, I won't disagree with you, but my car has a data logger, so I guess we''l have to sort it out in court. He wheeled around with a mad look on his face and asked me to explain. I told him that the car records all operational information with a time stamp, (I was fibbing, but, hey, I knew the cop was wrong about speeding), and the data can be downloaded. This made him madder, and he demanded I open my trunk (he was off his rocker- I have a wagon). Then he yelled at me about how I can't record cops. I said, sorry, it's all automatic and it does not record conversations, just data and location, via GPS. Like how long I have been stopped here at this location, how fast I was going, and speeds linked to location, turn signal use, brake use and rate of braking, acceleration etc. He realized that he was in trouble, should he give me a ticket, and I produced the data in court, so he yelled at me for being on the road late at night and drove off. These things can work both ways, you know.

  11. you are clueless on Why Can't Industry Design an Affordable Hearing Aid? · · Score: 1

there is way more to an aid than what tone is loud and what isn't. there is EQ bands, the number and placement of the center points, compression, compression rates, kneepoints, multi band limiters, and compensating for the varying acoustic anomalies that occur, like occlusion, within the ear canal. Jeez, learn what you are talking about before you post.

I know a guy in NZ who has a great aid, but can't get it to market, because he doesn't have the cash to get it to market. It costs a lot.

  13. to break it down on Why Can't Industry Design an Affordable Hearing Aid? · · Score: 1

when you buy an aid from a dispenser or audiologist, about half of the cost of the aid is his or her's profit, plus the free follow up visits. So all costs of maintaining an office are passed on to the end user. An audi doesn't sell a bunch of hearing aids - it's not like selling TVs - it's a low volume market. Because the CPUs are pricy to produce, due to relatively low unit sales, many makers share the same CPU, to spread out the R&D and production costs. Some companies like Siemens, can make their own chips. And aids makers are always working on faster CPUs, so the headliner aids are pricy, because the company is trying to recover their production costs before progress creates the next even better CPU, rendering the one they have "old tech". SO a hearing aid company can take its old out of date CPUs and put them in second and third line aids, and charge less, but, as always, if you want the fastest and newest, you gotta pay for it. It's a big race between all the aid makers, all the time. to produce the best aid. Note that, just like all digital audio devices, the fastest CPUs make the best sound, because they have the horsepower to handle it. So an aid company can get maybe three years out of a CPu before it gets outdated. IIRC an aid in raw materials is about $250, then it has to be assembled inside a custom ear mold or BTE unit, and the labor and programming and testing the aid adds to the final out the door cost. And the usual costs of promo and advertising and paying the beta testers, etc. But the cost is still high. A person can go to Costco and buy aids for about half of what an audi wills eel it for, because Costco hires audis on a salary, not on commission, so they are not saddled with having to sell aids to keep the business open. About US$3000 will get you a nice pair of aids.

Mitt refuses. unlike every president before, unlike what he demanded of his VP choice Ryan, unlike what his very own father did, to release ten years of taxes, then Mitt expects us to believe you when you say there's nothing there? 17. remotes on Ask Slashdot: Hearing Aids That Directly Connect To Smart Phones? · · Score: 2

Siemens / Rexton (same company, more or less, use a remote bluetooth the FM translator. Like wise, bernafon. I think Resound uses a direct Bluetooth, but I'm not certain. I have Rextons. You major issue is accumulated lag time - I wanted to use the remote to take off the board for a direct feed into the aids, but, while it worked, the delay made it useless. If you are not syncing with real time audio, then you'll be fine. You should go to Costco to buy your aids- you'll get a pair plus remote for around $3k, and unlimited support. I hate to break it to you, but hearing aid companies, with the exception of Bernafon (Chronos 9) and Resound, do not know how to set aids for live music. The people that sell the aids don't either, and they do not have the gear to be able to test the aids in real world sound levels, especially with music. You will laugh when they play a clip of a symphony on a pair of tiny computer speakers and try to convince you that that is a test for "music". You will, as I have been doing for over 8 years now through 6 sets of aids, wind up programming the aids yourself. And here is a critical issue: Inout stage headroom. It is incredibly stupid, but hearing aid makers do not tell you how much sound the can take without overloading the input stage. Most of them seem to think that 95db input A/D is fine, but on stage can go past 100db quick. The trouble is, most makers do not use an input stage limiter, so what happens is the aids go into digital distortion, very ugly sounding. I am going to capitalize here: DO NOT BUY A PAIR OF AIDS UNTIL YOU GET VERBAL CONFIRMATION OF THE INPUT STAGE HEADROOM DIRECT FROM THE MAKER. Do not trust anyone until you know for sure, and I can tell you right now the info is not on any of the aid data sheets. I know - I have been through three pairs of aids with this problem, and have had the hearing aid makers' audiologists tell me the wrong thing - twice. They do not know, and they will say "Oh, no one ever asks this." If they say that, then you should not buy that aid. Resound has an Alera that will take 108 without distorting, and Bernafon may be your best bet - they have a music channel with Live music plus, designed by Marshall Chasen, that is a mimic of the old LP RIAA curve - rolls off top and bottom at input, then restores it at output. Neat. Google that name, and Google Mead Killien / K - amp. If you can hold off until mid Oct. there may be new models coming out. Aids are nothing more than a CPU and some programming, a microphone and a speaker, all put together by companies that focus on speech, but not fidelity. They tend to put in all these craptastic features that do nothing but inhibit fidelity. For instance, for music, you must turn off anti feedback, speech enhancers, multi microphone,s auto gain, etc. basically strip it down to an EQ, a bank of compressors and a multi band limiter, to get it to work. FInally make sure you get to see the adjustment software- this is the other weak link - as a musician, you will need as many EQ and compression bands as you can get, and you will need the fastest comp release times around. You will be amazed to find that most aids only give you two EQ band for half of the music spectrum - 500hz and 250hz - half of a piano. You will need at least one more at 125Hz and at least 8 compression bands. And you will need at least four bands of limiter called MPO in hearing aid parlance. If you want more info, email me direct.

Same and maybe better service, a life time of follow ups, and close to half the retail cost of hearing aids. bernafon and rexton are their out of house brands and both are excellent aids. I have the Rextons... BEWARE: BEFORE you buy any hearing aid, knwo this: you will be tied to the dispenser for the life of the aids, so make sure you know that the dispenser is competent, has good "bedside" manners, and is efficient, and patient. The Army's first set of charges were too weak and full of holes. As the wiki leaks story progressed (and stories of Manning's torture), the Army realized that they would lose if they went to court with what they had - none of their accusations held water. So they came up with as many charges as they could, and "re-charged" Manning. Trouble is, like the first set of charges, these are weak, too, but the Army is banking on "prosecution fatigue" where the court will get tired of wading through the prosecution's BS and pick SOMETHING that they can get a guilty verdict on. Let's hope Manning has good representation who sees through this and will stop this tactic in its tracks.
