...Personally I just hate the "I know what's good for you" Apple mantra.

This is one of the things I like most about Apple. First let me say I started with Slackware in 96, moved onto Debian testing, and got my first mac about two years ago. I love open source, and support it. However, I find RMS's beliefs to be quite radical. I respect him, and his beliefs, I just think he takes them to far.

Apple manages to control how you use your Mac, and its usually a good thing. With OS X you have a consistency that you dont have with Windows or Linux. Every interface is the same. Heres an example. In windows look at the interface for Explorer, then look at the interface for Nero. They couldnt possibly be different. In Linux you have KDE, GNOME, etc etc. When you learn to do one thing on OS X you learn how to do that for everything. With consistency I know what to expect. With consistency developers know what to expect. They know what kind of hard ware I have, have a good idea how I use my mac, they know how their program will interact with others. Once everything is done, you have what is in my opinion the best computer/os that is out there. Others have other opinions, some agree, some disagree, Im just stating mine.

    Three reasons

First it runs OS X. Maybe thats not good enough for you, and if its not, fine. For me, its a good enough reason.

Second lots of nice high end hardware. Sure, graphics cards leave a lot to be desired. But macs arnt sold to hard core gamers. You want a gaming machine? A mac is not for you.

Third they look SO nice. Rather than getting some ugly grey box, my iMac is a single piece of hardware. With wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, wireless internet I have litterly one wire, a power cable. I like that my computer looks nice.

Fourth (a bonus!) keep in mind, you may like windows, you may like linux, you may like OS X, or you may even like all three. Each person has their own preferences. Just because a mac isnt the right computer for you, doesnt mean its not the right computer for me. I hate windows. But there are those that love it. Great, it works for them and they are happy. Thats part of what makes us individuals.

It all depends on the hardware. I upgraded my friends daughters laptop from vista to xp, and spent three days hunting down drivers. I eventually got everything working except usb 2.0, I could only get 1.0 working. Out of everything on that laptop, usb 2.0 should have been the easiest thing to get working. I have an old lap top from 1995 in the kitchen I use for recipes and it has Debian testing and I cant get usb to work at all on it. Other hardware windows/linux ran out of the box, still again other hardware windows/linux did not run out of the box. It all depends on the hardware.

Macs arnt unreasonably expensive, they are high end computers. If you want a low quality $300 computer, go get something from Dell. If you want a high end system, macs are a good way to go. Just because they dont sell cheap crap doesnt mean they are over priced. Is a Ferrari an over priced car because they dont sell the ford pinto? No, its a high end car. You want quality, you pay a lot for it. You want cheap crap, then you pay a lot less for it. Then you go on to say that a windows beta is of quality that open source couldnt dream of.
