  1. where does the distrust come in? on Open Source Word-of-Mouth Advertising · · Score: 1

...I would make it a point to rout out and publicly humiliate any Bzzers I discover.

Word of mouth advertising brings advertising back to its original purpose: to inform you of the existance of a product you might want. Not to tell you it's needed to get laid, or that you NEED it, etc etc etc.

If the folks are simply doing this because they like what they bought, why do you need to humiliate them? I've convinced several of my friends to buy PowerBooks. I did so because I thought they'd enjoy it as much as I have mine, and it seems they are doing just that.

Believe me, I hate it just as much when someone I know pushes some crap on me and I find out there's some incentive for them. No, I don't want a free iPod. However, when someone simply says "Hey you should get an iPod. I got one and I use it every day." -- where's the distrust?

Anyone out there with anecdotes on YellowDog vs OS X?

I stopped running linux on my macs at work for one simple reason. Make a list of the activities you plan to do under linux, that you couldn't do under OS X. Now, make a list of things you can do under OS X and can't do under linux. Chances are, you'll end up sacrificing a bunch of features so you can simply say "I'm running linux". There's no motive.

Hell, if you're a X11 purist you can even make it so you can toggle your OS X install between Aqua and XDarwin as your default environment. ...but once again, there's not much reason to do this as you mostly just lose functionality. Mac's have the advantage of being able to use OS X, why not do it?

People are buying SUVs to be a bit safer than the average car in a crash. So now everybody's gotta get one to stay safe.

What's great is, SUV's aren't safer. These things are always rolling over and killing the passangers, losing control in rainy weather, etc. It's true that colliding with an SUV is bad news, but it doesn't mean that driving an SUV makes you safer.

There's been recalls on laptops where batteries explode / overheat. It's not very common, but it happens. It definately sucks for the consumer, and if it happened to me I would definately pressure my provider into getting me expensive phone for free or something, but not burden the legal system with such petty bullshit.

Hey great rant, but be realistic. Valve can do whatever they want, because they have the most anticipated game in years. Raise a fuss, tell your friends, maybe even walk around with a "BOYCOTT VALVE" sign. It won't make a dent in the sales. Most people who want to play the game will just shut up, jump through the hoop, and start playing. Those with rigid opinions on software licensing are not the target audience of the game.

BTW, how exactly is modifiying the program to bypass copy protection routines NOT a derivative work?

These HIDs are indeed obnoxious as hell, and probably dangerous too:

    - They are more focused than ordinary lights. As such, when a car that is equipped with them follows you on an uneven road, the lamps annoyingly blink and even change color in your retrovisor.

Ooooh, BLINKING. I can TASTE the danger!! Seriously though, more focused beams are less likely to throw light into eyes of the other drivers (say, in an oncoming lane).

...I hate the off-white color too.

Actually they hit closer to white than halogen (which are yellow tint). I do agree that the real high color temperature ones (the purple and blue) are dumb, not only because of the color of the light but the fact that they produce less light.

I don't buy into their ability to provide better illumination.

It's not like this is magnet therapy, there's a measurable difference: HID lamps give more lumens at the light source, and are therefore brighter. Brighter lights help you see oncoming road contitions further ahead, giving you more time to react.

The only thing dangerous is you driving around with a dirty windsheild and blaming every light that shines on it at night.
