  6. energy conserve question for the slashdot crowd on How Are You Conserving Energy? · · Score: 1
This gives me a chance to ask something:

In the winter, does it save energy to turn off lights when not in use?

If I know my physics, theoretically the answer is no. All the electrical energy used by a light bulb either is converted to heat inside the bulb (which you need anyway, because it's winter) or light, which immediately strikes something in the room and is converted to heat.

Whatever heat is produced stays inside the house, and just means your heater runs that much less. The amount of energy saved in your heater should be almost exactly equal to that consumed by your light bulb. Assuming your heater is electric, it would seem that you don't save any energy by turning the light off (unless the light is near a window and some light escapes the house, but I imagine this is a negligible energy loss).

When I was in high school, my parents nagged me constantly about the lights being on. I tried to give them the above argument, but they just weren't buying it.

Can anyone help validate (or invalidate) my argument?

I personally shorted at $15, again at $10, and again at $8. I have only covered about 5% of what I shorted. I am tempted to short even more, but I feel like the potential gain is too small ($3 and change per share) to risk losing so much (as much as $100 per share, maybe more, maybe less).

I keep it in my car, usually, connected to my in-dash unit (unfortunately, thru a tape adapter).

When I go on (plane) trips, I just slip it in my pocket as I get out of the car.

It's true, it's not quite as solid as an Ipod (either physically or the UI), but what do you want for half the price? The sound quality is excellent, it also plays ogg-vorbis and features gapless playback. Gapless is great for live albums. The battery life is also excellent. I keep it in my car for about 2 weeks without having to recharge.

The firmware has definitely improved since I bought the unit. It did occasionally crash back then, but I have not experienced a crash with the latest firmware (at least 6 months). One really aggravating thing is that the reset button is very deep and the hole is very tiny. You need something like a needle to reset the unit if it should crash. And if you don't have one with you, the HD keeps clicking until the battery dies. Not a great design, but it's been a non-issue for me with the latest firmware.

I get tired of people saying "it's not as good as an iPod." So what? It costs half as much. It has nearly all the functionality of an iPod, plus some features the iPod lacks. If you ask me, the Karma is the best deal out there, for the money.

Huh? How do you think a speedometer works? Radar?? The car only knows its speed from the speed of rotation of the tires. So when the tires slip with cruise control on, the wheels keep spinning at the same speed, while the car slows down. The cruise control doesn't know the car is slowing down, so it does not try to gun the engine while the tires are slipping.

When traction is regained, the speed of the wheels suddenly drops, and the cruise control sees this as a sudden drop in speed, and tries to speed up the car back to cruising speed (as it should).
