Here in upstate NY Verizon is king, they have the best coverage BY FAR. Every one of my friends, family, and co-workers have Verizon, and the few who have tried Cingular have regretted it and gone back to Verizon. So, while I am an Apple customer since System 7, I probably won't be getting an iPhone simply because I need it to MAKE CALLS. And as much as I dislike VZ, they do spend a lot of $$$ on infrastructure. We just got EVDO (and Mac-compatible expresscards) and FIOS (just internet and phone for now, TV will come later).
Home support sucks hard, remember these are unmanaged PC's with everyone running as admin. I did it for awhile and decided the money was not worth the aggravation. People want you to fix their Windows ME P.O.S that they bought from Home Shopping Network and don't understand why when you tell them to upgrade. Stick with enterprise support where you can control Windows updates, antivirus updates, user account permissions, etc. and you'll live longer.
to use with a laptop is probably what most people will say, and also for less desk clutter, and maybe even for a media center-type setup. I've been looking into bluetooth mice ever since I got my Macbook, and it looks like I'll continue to wait for the right one. Kensington has a nice small one, and so does Logitech and some smaller companies, but nothing has really seemed 'just right' yet.
here's some more stuff somewhat related to what you're talking about... I'm visiting NYC for some training and there are iPod ads everywhere. Even the street vendors are now selling iPod accessories (granted, some of the stuff can work with any device with an audio jack, but they all have likenesses of iPods on them). And in the malls at the kiosks where they sell phone accessories they now sell iPod stuff as well. Back home I bought a small folding set of speakers at a local supermarket for $12. Again, it's not a dock-connecting set but it had a cardboard iPod in the blister pack and it fits my 4G iPod perfectly. So I don't neccessarily think it's the accessory makers fault for overlooking the 'other' devices market, it's Creatives fault (and Iriver, and whoever else). They need to do some MARKETING. When was the last time you saw a commercial for a Zen? I've never seen one. They need to create some buzz.
I think the percentage of Slashdot readers using Apple portables is much higher than 7% based on the number of Mac-centric news articles and user postings, so I think it is interesting news to a lot of us (although I won't be the one swinging my 'book around like a lightsaber). And as the slogan says, it's 'News for Nerds', and it doesn't get much nerdier than this.
unfortunately the only Universal Binary they're released as yet is WoW. I just wish they'd give us some kind of timeline for UB's or even let us know which games will be updated(like are they doing Starcraft?).
I got a new Macbook today to replace an aging Pismo and I was worried about the glossy screen too. Even in the Apple store I was looking at it from every angle trying to see if the screen would be an issue. Once I got home and started using it though I found it's not a problem at all. The only time I can see any glare is if the background is black.
holy who gives a crap, batman! as uninteresting as this is, I'm sure I'll have to package it shortly because some exec wants to watch some shitty video which requires it. I'm also sure it will be a pain to lock out all of the program guides and checking for updates and other annoyances. They supply an enterprise deployment kit to aid in config, but why isn't all that junk turned OFF by default? grumble
It's not just you, I've heard many reports of Tiger being slower on older machines. Because of that, I'm staying with 10.3 on my Pismo until it is replaced as it runs acceptably fast in nearly every situation (I don't do video or gaming or any other CPU/GPU intensive stuff). I don't miss Widgets or any of the other new eye-candy type stuff in 10.4.
BTW, the replacement for Pismo will be in the form of the second-gen Macbook Pro with a Merom-based core duo being released in Q3 (fingers X'ed), and will hopefully last 6 years like my Pismo has.
but MS isn't? MS has years and years of x86 development under it's belt and Apple is a newcomer(in x86 land), so how come Apple can make their OS use EFI and MS can't? It can't be a technical reason unless Vista developers are a bunch of idiots, so it has to be political. Of course, Apple led the charge with USB, Firewire, dropping the floppy, etc. so I guess embracing new tech is more Apple's area than MS.
I think the motherboard in these new Powerbooks are using a pretty generic Intel MB and that is how they were able to get them to market so quickly. I would guess that a future rev with more design input from Apple will add FW800. Is FW800 even a part of Intel's standard chipsets?
I thought the reason for no streaming was that Apple was using HD cameras and to stream would be too much bandwidth. After the keynote they encode using h264 and then distribute the file. I could be way off though.
nice site, thanks for the link. I wasn't really expecting too much from this film, but from the video blogs it looks like they got the right director. Tim Burton would have ruined it.
very funny post, where do you find these pics? These have to be staged, or maybe an Apple attempt at 'viral' marketing or some other insidious plan to win over alt-geeks
well, seeing as I can't get decent results searching on microsoft.com, I don't see how they can think they are even close to competing with Google. Most of the time when I need to find something at ms I use a 'site:microsoft.com' from Google and much better results than the MS site search.
everyone knows when you splice genes you end up with twins, one good and one bad(see movie 'Twins'). Joswiak is in marketing, so is the good twin creating the next gen Powerbook in some dank dungeon beneath 1 Infinite Loop?
Will this change Verizon's stance on bluetooth connectivity? I hope so, because I am long overdue for a new phone and have been waiting for the CDMA RAZR. I'm afraid what Verizon may do to the bluetooth and even the mini-usb port on the razr, since they've already replaced the entire Moto GUI with the new standard Verizon interface(this even meant removing the menu button from between the soft keys). Unfortunately in my area if you're not on Verizon you'll have spotty service, I know people with Cingular who do not have coverage in their own homes.
Fair Play is Apple's DRM, you're thinking of Microsoft's 'Plays for Sure' branding for their protected WMA format. It's a little green logo I believe, that says 'Plays for Sure' on it.

The new Apple Newton sounds better to me than iPhone
Verizon just ran fiber to my community and is pushing their new TV services which I thought was IPTV, but this article says it's not?

I got my Macbook the day they were released and use it daily, and it still looks new. I think these people complaining just have grimy hands.
in case it hasn't been mentioned yet, this release does not support Safari

agreed. Apple is letting Creative live for now because they are number 2(however distant), and don't want the gov claiming monopoly.

I thought Microsoft and Mountain Dew had merged and I was the only one who didn't hear about it

iBooks are in that range, obviously not as nice as a Powerbook but fine for casual computing
