This story is ridiculously old--I've heard variants where the original owner of the cannon is just about every aerospace company and gov't, and the stupid recipient of cannon is just about every aerospace company and gov't. =P
A possible reason: From all accounts, mi2g are "security experts" in the same sense that street-corner winos in foil hats are "conspiracy investigators".
I truly wish I could afford South Park DVDs. Alas, my fiancee's tastes run more towards art films, and my half of the entertainment budget goes to computer parts. =P
I "helped" (by coloring in squares on graph paper) my dad write a program that displayed graphics by coloring a pixel at (x,y) when I was maybe 4 years old. This was on a Commodore 64, right after the Commodore 128 came out and the price dropped enough for my dad. =P
Bah, I remap those buttons as soon as I get the mouse. There are so many more important/convenient things I can use them for--generally, on my logitech wireless mouse, I use the wheel click as paste and the thumb side button as double-click, then I set my double-click speed insanely fast so I can't accidentally double-click things (I have the tendency to click absent-mindedly, do to a minor twitch in my hand muscles).
"Back" and "Forward" are far too limited to web browsing to assign a mouse button to them.
I remember it's one of the ones when he's playing harmonica. I have an mp3 that goes something like "Hey, you guys, listen to this song I just wrote! It's called 'I hate you guys'." *blues harmonica riffs* "I hate you guys. *harmonica* You guys are assholes. *harmonica* Especially Kenny. *harmonica* I hate him the most. Now everybody! I hate you guys. C'mon, you know the words!"
No, you just have to look at it from the right perspective.
The motives for OSS (pride-of-work, itch-scratching) are different than the motives of CSS (cash in hand).
Different things motivate different people. People in Open Source are arguably motivated to code by different/better things than Closed Source developers, who work for profit (And maybe job satisfaction)
I've read through a lot of shitty closed source code at my current workplace, what's your point? Code is shitty the world over (and you can quote me on that. =P)
Well, I hope it works out for you, especially the career change. I count myself fortunate that I code in front of a picture window (being in the showy "ops center" instead of the server vault hath its privileges.)
Sounds like you need a different fiancee. Or maybe she needs a different fiancee.
Seriously, if (for example) my fiancee didn't play Diablo II and such with me, I'd probably not be engaged to her. It's that simple--you'll have a much happier life if your fiancee shares several of your hobbies.
As for taking everything emotionally, that's a problem. I suggest finding a counselor. Perhaps she has pre-existing emotional issues or something?
Basically, if your method of talking about things causes her emotional stress, one or both of you needs to change the way you communicate.
My final bit of advice is this: Weekdays are not "supposed to" suck ass. I work 8-10 hour days, 5 days a week, and love every blasted minute of it. Maybe a career change (to something either with fewer hours or something you enjoyed more) would benefit you in general and your love life in particular.
Thanks, I've been Dr. Zeriel, your one-stop unsolicited-advice-from-slashdot stop. =P
My fiancee and I have a pretty good arrangement for all this. I work full time, she works part time. As a result, when we get the money in and the budget taken care of, the leftover money is split on a percentage between what I make and what she makes.
It's a pretty fair agreement if both people work and compomises are made (I generally give her some of my share, provided I don't need new toys that month. =P)
You realize there's nothing stopping, say, IB FUCKING M from profiting on service and support on linux with bundled apps. Like they're doing now, y'know.
Perhaps more to the point, there's literally nothing but (misplaced) pride keeping MICROSOFT from distributing OpenOffice with Windows 2k3 or whatever and charging for per-incident support.
Offtopic: Is Microsoft Office 2k3 still better than OpenOffice? Absolutely, for many things.
My fiancee says you need to spend some of those earnings learning to type and speak English.

Actually, there are authoritative texts that spell it "Occam's" (usually mathematical/scientific) and there are authoritative texts that spell it "Ockham's" (usually history/philosophy)
I believe that Ockham is "more correct" from the perspective of "How was this spelled in Middle English?" and Occam is "more correct" from the perspective of "How does this word sound when I say it?"
As I recall, the initial "few thousands of years" calculation was invalid because the rate of change in size changes in unpredictable ways, and is not a constant as was first suggested.
*sigh* Why does Microsoft get a right to tell me what I can do with the hunk of silicon and plastic I bought?
If you can come up with a reasonable explanation for that, I'll agree that this exploit is bad.
Hell, the damn thing as published doesn't allow anything but a linux bootloader--no pirated games.
The other thing is that paypal charges around $0.50 fees per use, so you can't have "real" micropayments with it.
Funny, but 90% of the spam that reaches my inbox (I'm a sysadmin) is directed to postmaster@blah (we have about 5 different domains).

No, what the original poster was saying is that you can buy a brand-new, full-featured keyboard with the BS switches.
They just cost $75-$125.
Which most people won't pay in an age of $10 membrane keyboards.
I truly wish I could afford South Park DVDs. Alas, my fiancee's tastes run more towards art films, and my half of the entertainment budget goes to computer parts. =P
Vilifying Sholes REALLY annoys me...he was my great-great-great-great-great-uncle. =P
I swear I clear up that stupid qwerty-slows-you-down misconception at least twice every time keyboards are mentioned on slashdot.

RIAA != law enforcement, which is precisely why Verizon was holding out.

Is it $299/installation better? *snort* No.
You'll note that any damn company that wants to can use the same free bundled software royalty-free. =p

Funny, I have tons of really good dos+Win3.1 stuff (Perfect General 2 being the canonical example) that DOESN'T run under so much as Win95.
I HATE that.
There are some PCs with software-controllable floppy drives. I think some compaqs had them, IIRC.
As I recall, the initial "few thousands of years" calculation was invalid because the rate of change in size changes in unpredictable ways, and is not a constant as was first suggested.
I actually had a drink over lunch to celebrate the death of a segregationist. How'd YOU celebrate the death of that rotting piece of ancient filth?
