"Mr Thompson criticised the decision to have an employee take him through the game, arguing he could have avoided making violent choices."
If true, this just goes to show that the game allows you the player to make moral choices. It allows you to choose a non violent path to certain situations.
After reading this fiasco for the past few months i'm actually wanting to buy the game. Prior to Thompson throwing a fit, i would have ignored the game on the shelf.
I'll spend more for a CPU than I would a console anyday and Still afford to support a woman. As far as I'm aware game consoles do not have any 3D apps (3DS Max, truespace...) on them yet. That's still a PC market thing.
Not all "geeks" work Wendy's jobs and live in mom's Basement. Many are rather successful people with gobs of cash to waste on woman and CPU's.
I went out drinking with the guys a few nights ago. It was a good 8 hours or so of partying. I think we easily spent a few hundred bucks each. There's no replay value in that. We go out again next week and it'll be a few hundred more bucks.
Now for 20 bucks you get a game that takes 5 hours. You can play it again and again and it won't cost you 20 bucks each time you replay it. Now that's a deal.
I had Episodic Content as a big part of my business plan 3-4 years ago when i was seeking Venture funding for a game company.
I was after a base engine design the was easily modified and expanded on. THe main game would be a bigger chunk and a single story. The Later content could be added ontop of the main story and add to, expand or even take it to a new direction.
The main goal was for a small Indie game shop to make games incrementally so you could get them to shelf sooner and start making return on investment sooner. As the compant grows more content can be added. This sounded like a great Idea but no Ventures bit. They sort of laughed at the idea because they were thinking Grand projects. Incremental releases would have built a grand game, over time.
My concept was a blend of the NWN style as well as Episodic content. Too bad it never "took" hold when i thought of it so many years ago.
With Revolution, everyone knew how to pronounce it. With WII, you can do "we", "Why" and some other colorful pronounces. Imagine parents going to a store to buy this new system for the kids with the "why" pronounciation. It'll become a Abbot and Costello skit:
Parent: I'm looking for the New Nintendo system Sales Guy: the Nintendo WII? P: because my kid wants it. SG: Right, ok so you want the Nintendo WII? P: I heard it was new and revolutionary SG: WII is revolutionary, it has a great controler, and cool features, I'll get you 1 Nintendo WII P: Because i want to buy it SG: I know you want to buy the Nintendo WII P: forget it get me the Xbox
I go only to see the movie I deem needs the big screen to fully enjoy. Starwars Episode 2/3, Gladiator and LoTR to name a few big screen epics.
Other than that the movies are over priced, too crowded and noisy. People talk over the movies and yap on cell phones. Constant crunching and rustling of bags as well as that occasional stinky person. In all it's a horrible experience going to the movies these days.
Now at home, i have peace, healthier food and no stinky people. I can pause it if I want, i can crank my 6.1 system. Best of all, I can have some privacy with my honey instead of a thousand people watching us and not the movie... But then again there's nothing wrong with people watching.
ok, Raph had one sucess: UO. UO was fun, but that was also Garriots brain child and i would believe Raph had limited control over the game.
In SWG, well that was what i believe to be his first major project, and it showed at release. The game was a hack job that they spent months more fixing and duct taping. It took months to get to a working state and a year after the game was going great. THen they decided to change directions. A year later after everyone got used to it, they changed directions again.
I'm so totally happy Raph got his ass fired from SOE. When they first announced he's "leaving" the SWG project back over a year ago, i was totally happy. Now that his sticky fingers are out of the company entirely, well SOE can finally make fun non sadistic games made for masochists
What does Ubunto mean? Is it a software program or an operating system?
If you wonder why OSS is being considered a "fad" and soon to die there's the answer. How can you take the name "breezy badger" seriously. It sounds more like a cartoon series than it does a software package.
Fallout series had alot going for it. I personally thought it was a great game series even though i played Fallout 2 first then went back to 1 several years later. It was more "real" than Half life. You could pimp yourself out, or your wife out for money. The game was dark, they didn't hold back too much on their apocalyptic vision. excellent story, just that turn based combat got really annoying, really.
We need more dark visionaries in that Half life, Fallout style. Someone to put reality in our face and let us live the dark side of life that's usually kept hidden from our views. Forgetting the past, or ignoring the possible future is no way to solve problems. Remembering, and living them, even through a "game" is one way to share other realities and expand our lives.
why go through so much trouble to run a modern game? I've always ran linux/*BSD along side a Windows machine. The Windows machine was for my gaming since it was a no brainer worry free solution.
When i could only afford 1 machine i'd dual boot. Linux for 1 thing and windows for gaming. Emulators and the likes are just too much a burden for me when the hardware/OS is so readily available. Dont want to give money to MS? Fine risk FBI visitations from pirating. In the end limiting yourself to a single OS is just that limiting. Each one is a tool and has a purpose. Windows = great gaming, easy to install and run.
THe irony here is i used Windows 98 for years. What cause me to upgrade to XP 3 years later was a sinple game... Xwing Alliance. It kept crashing on me to the point i shelved it one day. A few years later i wanted to play it again and it crashed my 98 machine a few times. Out of pure spite I installed Windows XP and SP1. To be honiest I've been very satisfied with the results. I could complete Xwing Alliance without a single crash in XP. It's now the mainstay of my Gaming life. I am a hardcore gamer through and through.
1. It's a game, made for people to have fun 2. It somewhat reflects the time period, but may be somewhat exagerated to make the GAME more fun or apealing, or just be over the top. 3. it's a GAME 4. If we forget, or pretend, racism, slavery, genocide and all the other bad things of our past, we'll end up doing it all over again. The rememberance of these acts against humanity allows us to move forward and better ourselves. Forgetting is making the same mistake again... 5. It's a friggen game, get over it.
Here lies SWG. It started with fire and passion Died alone and forgotten. Left abandoned by the people who cared.
SWG had many ailments and health issues that made it's life difficult. It's forsight was hindered making it unable to see far ahead It lacked the hindisght to learn from the past SWG had no sense of direction and ended up wandering in circles.
It was too rebelious and too different SWG suffered from schitzophernia and never knew who or what it was at a given time The poor soul had inhibitions to please everyone but failed by being too diverse SWG's parents always listend to the dumbest in the crowed and tried to make SWG dumber like those voices crying out.
SWG aspired to be many things and in the end burned itself out by listening to it's misguided friends. It tried many things, but did them all poorly and without much thought. Sort of that same spontanious "hey we're all jumping off the bridge, let's go NOW!!" sort of action..
Let's lower our heads and tip our hats to a once great SWG that dwindled away cold, alone and forgotten.
SWG was a good friend when we met 2 years ago, but we grew apart as it he changed his ways and because dumber from the drugs habbit he formed.
Booth babes are geared specifically towards men, and are very sexist. to even things out in todays "I'm ok you're ok" world we need "Booth Studs".
but that would be unfair to others. We need "booth Lesbians" and "Booth Gay guy". But that would offend people still because we'd be forgetting the Bi-sexual community, so we need "Bi Booth Guy" and "Bi Booth Babe"
So there's 6 models we need to hire to apeal to the majority. "Booth Sheep" for the more exotic tastes out there.
Waaaay too complex. How about we get rid of Booth babes and offend no one. Bleh, there goes my reason to go.
they'd need to bring across the "smaller support" creatures like the dung beetle as well. These cool little guys keep Africa from being submerged in 2 feet of elephant poo.
Considering the website and simply how direct the post was without any for of innuendo, yeah it was a shock. While the subject of sex is nothing new to me, it being on this website beyond tinfoil hat speculation is a shocker.
I'll say this was a real shock when i opened up the browesr to a normally clean site.
But I can see what the submitter was getting at. Most games start out slow, then bam you're tossed into this massive extended climax with no pause to rest.
A good game and story would start slow, hit some exciting points, relax abit, then burst with a full and exciting climax then calm again and cuddle you after complete the game.
One site at a time.
... the honest hard working way.
Take em to court and sue for millions to keep your company alive.

For some reason I think Slashdot is being invaded by Fark.

first we get a computer that runs without running, now we get people selling free software, for money.
So the computer sits in a space time continuum that gives the output purely on the fact that sometime in the future you will run the program?
Or does it sit there and think over the answers with whatever quantum molocules haven't been flushed from the system at the time of power off ?
I been a "professional" gamer for 15 years now, i should get in on this competition.
