  1. Re:Terraforming on Earth's Oxygen History Could Explain "Darwin's Dilemma" In Evolution · · Score: 1

Just FYI, during the Great Oxygenation Event, atmosphere levels were pretty low for most of the time preceding the spike in levels. I'm of the understanding that it's because it takes a long time before both the top layer crust and oceans become saturated first prior to any excess lingering in the atmosphere. Which makes sense given that oxygen will bind with just about anything in the form of oxides.

Actually, this might explain why we can't identify gene/s that govern the fast disparity in intelligence among the rest of thee human race. Perhaps every healthy baby (no genetic abnormalities such as downs, etc) is born with the capacity to be highly intelligent to begin with. However, it's when you get hit with this virus does it cause cognitive impairment. As such, it won't show up in a normal DNA test; not unless you can actually get sample of neurons directly and sequence them for alterations.

Scary stuff. Shit, I may have this virus too if the 44% of those tested because positive. That's 44% of the entire slashdot crowd. No joke!

But you don't have the option to not be fucked over when the market is abstracted from you. Pure and simple.

Voluntary to what extent? If privacy becomes insanely expensive to have (because all major appliances start violating your privacy in some way or another, and the one's that don't come at a premium), then it doesn't seem so voluntary anymore.

You're very shrewd! Yes, this will happen as it's already happening in the Auto Insurance industry. They already have it where you can get a discount for having a device track you and your driving habits via the OBD2 port. Given the trajectory of technology and how ubiquitous it becomes over time, what starts out as optional turns into mandatory. Same thing with all these health monitoring devices. Somehow they will be used to fuck you over for engaging in bad behavior. And if you have socialized healthcare, that could make you an enemy of the state for that 44oz Big Gulp.

In short, technology is a tool as most of us already know. But wow, I never imagined how quickly it would be turned into shackles of self-inflicted enslavement! Go society!!! (sarcasm)
