Some games cost more than that even. I remember when Final Fantasy 3 came out. I think that was around $70.00. There were some other games too that were more expensive for various reasons. I also remember people paying out of the ass for Final Fantasy 7. I think that was like $60.00. There was also a fewNES games that got as high as $70.00.

"so get the CS programs out of the math departments and put them under the Engineering departments as a Software Engineering degree"

I disagree with this somewhat. Although there are probably other ways, I think math is rather important for a couple reasons. First, it's pure problem solving. You're given problems in a domain that can be solved with the tools you're given. It reminds me of the same process I use for writing software: Analyzing a problem, determining what is needed to solve it and applying these steps in a logical and correct manner.

Two, math opens a new view of the world to people that study it and learn to appreciate it. I feel lucky to be a person in the world who was given the opportunity to learn as much about math as I did. I would feel like my education was worth less (note, not worthless) if I didn't get the math discipline I did.

In conclusion, if you just want to stamp out workers (maybe that is a prerogative?) then ditch the math and make a hybrid program that is a combination of MIS and computer science with the fun theory stripped out. This way you're teaching people how to program for about 4 years. You can count on me, and anyone else interested in CS, not signing up.

A good CS program will offer all the basics as the parent poster mentioned and make available many engineering type courses that focus on design and the "process" in general.

  5. Linux on Review of Consumer-Friendly Linux Distro · · Score: 2, Insightful

Linux is an amazing kernel regardless of how it's been developed, which actually makes it all the more impressive. The thing is right now there simply are not the resources to develop a competitive desktop operating system based on Linux. Every year Linux gets further behind Mac OS X and soon Microsoft's Vista for typical desktop use in business and homes.

Linux is however superior for servers I think. Everything makes sense. Security, configuration and the many options are at least equal to what is shipped by others and the development tools are fantastic. Nothing as pretty as MS's Visual Studio but functionally Linux can offer anything that MS can. On the desktop, there is no Linux solution that offers the functionality that Windows or OS X have.

I guess I stopped caring about Linux on the desktop a year ago or so. I gladly use it at home to run my various servers but use Win 2000 and OS X based systems for general tasks.

Don't get me wrong, I used Linux as a desktop for s few years and thought it was decent. But after using OS X enough and even Windows 2K I just cannot bring myself to use Linux on a desktop all the time.

Like I said, I enjoy using it for my servers, routing and some programming but it has a ways to go (and a fleeting ways at that) to catch up to commercial offerings. It doesn't take anything away from Linux and you don't have to tell me that Linux can be used as a desktop. I just think Apple and Microsoft provide better systems for day-to-day desktop use. Linux provides equal and better services for networks/servers.

In regards to their not being "rare" items, you are right and wrong. Many of the vendor's were very rare and hard to get. Thye of course produced the very best items. For instance, I recall Dwarf Sages as being the best sages because at a high level they created the very best items sages made. (Rings, neck pieces, a few other things).

Gold in SB became worthless though. On the War server anyways there was enough duping by a certain clan (Fallen Angels!) that they would offer you outrageous gold for items like that. I was able to set up a trade and get 2 30 int rings and 30 Gold for being the middle man in a trade that involved a dwarf sage.

Anyways, the PvP in SB was the best when people actually played (I haven't played in a couple years). Also, having thieves was great also.

In fact I do believe my thief holds the record for Gold stole. I once peeked a guy standing in the desert, quite a bit outside of Khar. I saw he had a boatload of items and something like 50,000,000 gold. I got pretty excited and stole like 30,000,000 gold from him using the old peek-steal-hide-trick and ran liike hell into Khar as he moved back to his friends party.

I'm sure it was duped gold and he had it on him because he was in Khar trading and forgot. That was a great moment that financed me and my friends until we stopped playing the game.

And for the record, here was how you duped in SB:
Stay up late until right before the servers go down to be reset at like 4AM. Right before this (They would announce server closings) go into a trade with someone. Trade all your Gold but only have the person trading it accept. When the server goes down and restarts you will see both parties have the gold that was involved in the trade. Do this for about a week and see how much money you hvae. In fact you could start with 1 Gold and be the richest player in the game after 3 weeks. It killed the game. I would have done it but I was rich enough and my Healer Channeler had enough power (Lightning Bolt 40!! pre-nerf with 40 stealth, mwahahaha) to kill just about anyone at will with my game play methods. Two of us even after the nerf would take out a party of 10. Ahh, the good old days.

And if anyone from the Fallen Angels is reading this, Hiroshimea and Davey owned you.

Hell, VS.NET costs over $1500.00 for a professional developer. Of course that's worth it though as it provides you with state of the art tools and systems for developing software quickly and correctly (no guarantees of course). Same thing with Apple's new dev box. You get a system and the environment for mearly $1000.00. That's really cheap, honestly. Especially when you consider you can get a year on the competition. Of course the competition bought the system too so now you have to etc...
