  2. Shawn Fanning on Napster Tries Again · · Score: 4, Interesting

Shawn Fanning is an idiot. This is not a troll. He releases a PTP system that is so inherently unthought out and stupidly illegal and try to make a go of it. He wrote a program in VB that was what it was because he couldn't implement anything more complex. Sure, some of the beauty of Napster was its simplicity. But this is also the reason we are in a jam with PTP systems like we are today. Without Napster we would not have the RIAA court cases. We would have Gnutella systems, Bit Torrent etc free from lawyers and everyone would be happy.

Napster was a lowest common denominator PTP system. It stole MP3's. Many people thought of simple systems like this that the masses could use but most knew better than to damage PTP credibility before this. Writing a Napster program in VB would take a few days at best. Not that his idea wasn't what counts, it is and simple is usually better. But in his case there was no way around it. Napster was made to steal music. At least with Hotline and similar technologies you could say it had other purposes and in some cases make other purposes for it.

Napster has caused so many problems with legit PTP systems. My problem with it was it was so flagrant. It was a dumb mans PTP system and it brought attention to other areas that otherwise didn't want it.

Now, I probably sound like I am hating on Napster because now it's harder for me to steal things. Well, it's not harder for to steal things so you can rule that out. But, I know systems are being monitored closely now and the general public knows what a PTP system is, well sort of. I download some music I don't own. I use free software so I don't need to pirate that. But now I can get a huge fine if I D/L a song from the wrong person. I blame Napster for this. Not for me D/Ling things, but for being so stupid, flagrant and blatantly illegal about it they fucked it up for everyone.

  5. Re:Base 2 on Hard Drive Capacity Confusion, Lucidly Explained · · Score: 1

More so for hardware and lower level programming. Things like decoders for instance. If you have an 8 X 1024 decode used to calculate addresses in memory it's easier to refer to that as a kilobyte. A decoder like that takes in 10 bits and has 1024 outputs where one of those outputs is triggered by the 10 bit combination of numbers. So, you would either be wasting memory or it would be a pain to label. Instead of saying you had 1K of RAM, you w0uld now have 1K + 4 bytes. It's simply easier to refer to it as 1K.

Perhaps then we should change 1024 bytes so that it has some other prefix instead of kilo. Maybe name them after famous computer scientests or something.

But, the point is hardware and low level programming (more so than high level languages such as C++) works out such that 1K is 2^10.

  6. Re:Base 2 on Hard Drive Capacity Confusion, Lucidly Explained · · Score: 1

"The solution is to make kilobytes officially be 1000 bytes.."

This would be bad. If you where to make 1K = 1000 bytes you would have a remainder when dealing with a word of 32 or 64 bits for instance. The fact that our word sizes are powers of 2 means that our larger unit size has to be powers of 2. From a consumer standpoint it makes sense to make 1K = 1000 bytes and so on, but from a computer viewpoint, it's best to leave it as is. All in all, people should research what a kilobyte is (in terms of how many bytes it is) before they become experts in storage capacities for computers.

Is this accurate? Isn't this built into IPv6 that most systems use today and if not, it is built into the older IP standards, all part of the TCP/IP layers. I thought you would have to modify the kernel to make it such that a packet sent to your computer could not be traced back. And even if you do remove that part of TCP/IP protocol, the very next hop will attach it's IP so your IP is never more than 1 hop away. I should read their methods first I guess (proxy servers?), but if you send it, someone, somewhere, can trace it back to you.

In the case of Windows, no one is stopping you from using another operating system if theirs is not stable enough for your use. I think you should be able to get a refund if their software doesn't do what it says it can and then move to Linux, OS X or whatever else you would like to use.
