The moral of this story: there is no test that covers EVERYTHING. If there was, that'd be like getting a Ph.D. in general studies from your local university. Why would you need anything more than around a GeForce FX 5200 or so with Linux? Sure, you can play Doom 3, but that's about it. I also think that a lowly GeForce 2 MX would run your dumb glxgears at like 15000 fps or whatever. You hardly need a really fast card for compiz. I just don't see the point. Please don't use an example like Nexuiz for rebuttal purposes, either; nobody cares about FSF-approved games. The fact of the matter is, nobody really cares about blazing fast video performance on Linux. ATI doesn't either - that's why the drivers suck.

You're not locked to Windows because of ATI hardware. You can always use the driver's supplied with X, although those aren't accelerated. Sure, you won't be able to run your dumb GL accelerated terminal emulators then, but that's hardly being locked into Windows. You could probably run from a console without X on ATI hardware, too.

Also, it's pretty presumptuous of you to assume that anyone here would care about you not purchasing ATI hardware. In short, you're an idiot.

This is because "free software" has been associated with Richard Stallman. I can't think of a less attractive mascot for "free software" than Richard Stallman. The entire persona of the man is nothing but a joke - nobody takes him seriously. The promotion of open source (but not necessarily "free") software is the way to adoption. In fact, "free software" is a symptom of open source, not the other way around.

Freedom of software, while perhaps ideal to a lot of people (mostly the zealots), is not feasible in today's world. Open-ness is. Open source has been doing a fairly good job of late breaking free of the RMS stigma, but more work is needed. The sooner OSS zealots trade in their Bibles from the Church of Emacs for briefcases and suits the better the industry and the world will be. I don't know about anyone else, but I have enough trouble with the U.S. Government being run by Christian zealots, and Christianity is an actual, bona-fide religion. If it were run by a bunch of RMS groupies and their stupid Church of Emacs, things would be much worse. Besides, we all know that real programmers use Vi.

It's Linux so you still have to recompile your kernel to support DC power, keyboards, turning the system off, unpluggin the power from the wall, more than 1 color on the screen at once, various video formats... pretty much anything and everything taken for granted by the rest of the world. BTW, we run Windows or Mac.

As a project, Debian is about the best example of bureaucracy going wrong that one can think of. Just go check out any of their mailing lists - they spend more time arguing about politics and philosophy than they do writing code. I thought this was a software project - shouldn't they be spending time, oh, I don't know... writing code? When you combine this with the fact that all of their programmers are volunteers and thus don't have tons of time to spend on the project, no wonder they never release.

Everyone here will agree, though, on one fact: there is nothing that Debian can do that Ubuntu can't do better.

OpenOffice.org is NOT a competitor for Office. Seriously. I know free software zealots and open source evangelists like to THINK it's a competitor, but it isn't. Walk into any office in the nation - the world for that matter - and I bet you they're running Microsoft Office and not OpenOffice.org. Why? Because only free software zealots and open source evangelists use the open document format. Everyone else uses .doc, .xls and what have you. Seriously. Anyone who says differently is wrong, plain and simple.

To the grandparent, if Apple were to compete directly with Microsoft (by selling OS X for vanilla PCs) starting tomorrow, Microsoft could not afford to stop work on Office for Mac. The reason is simple - because of the whole antitrust thing. If they did stop work on it, it would look like they were abusing their monopoly to crush Apple's attempt to gaining market share, which is exactly what they do NOT want to do, given that they're already in trouble for being monopolistic pricks.

I agree 100% with this post. Furthermore, I might add, Linux just feels slower because of the way things work. For example, consider playing your favorite song in MP3 format [1]:

    In Windows:
    1. Double click. It's playing.

    In Linux:
    1. Double click. Oh, darn - your distribution values freedom more than convenience (the main purpose for using a computer), so you don't have MP3 support.
    2. Try apt-get/yum/emerge/whatever to download MP3 support libraries. Still no luck. Oh, I get it - it's part of the non-free software repository.
    3. Google for about an hour to find how to enable non-free software support.
    4. Try apt-get/yum/emerge/whatever again. You just got an error. I wonder what's wrong?
    5. Open Firefox and browse to distribution homepage. I hope they have a forum there to ask questions.
    6. Use the forum you found in step #5 to fix the problem. If you don't have access to a forum, I guess it's time to fire up an IRC client.
    7. Look around on freenode IRC for people to help fix your problem. This could take days. ...

Given that it takes this long to get an MP3 playing under Linux, it's no wonder that it feels so slow.

[1] - Don't even start about playing your files in Ogg format. Nobody uses Ogg, as there are no players on the market outside of software players under Linux that play that format. Macs can play MP3s, Windows can play MP3s, Linux cannot. See a problem here?

How is Linux so productive? I know of people who have spent literally months tweaking their system to the point where it's usable. I know of several in fact who have had to Google for days and weeks even to find patches to enable support for commonly used formats like MP3. You can argue about the legality of using an MP3 encoder/decoder on Linux all day long, but the fact is that if you spend all of your time trying to get your system to work with the files and software you want, it's NOT productive, in any meaning of the word.

Personally, every single person I have talked to is more productive on a Mac than they are on an Ubuntu box (and most of my friends are computer science students like myself, so it's not like we're talking about Mom and Dad here). Ubuntu has come a long way toward making Linux a productive system, but as long as there are elitists, free software evangelists who refuse to support common formats on moral grounds and apologists (like you) fueling the development of the system, it will never be as useful, productive or versatile as a vendor-supported operating system like Mac OS X or even Windows XP.
