Whoah whoah whoah... I'm fairly certain you cannot do kernel level programming in VB. Maybe you can use some API's to interact with some kernel dll's or something... but that is hardly low level. But if you've never used anything but basic, you probably don't have a real concept of what low level really is.
Many people here are irritated so much by web ads and others are saying "Hey, it's their only source of income to keep these sites running". So here is the challenge; make advertising vissible and effective... but not intrusive. To me, one of the major things that is annoying about web ads is the unpredictability of how they show up. You never know what's going to pop up in your face and what shape or size it's going to pop up in. With TV this isn't a problem because it's all linear. If there was something more standardized.... a standard size and method of display... as well as the ability to quickly remove the ad from your screen, I think that would be a good compramise. And maybe we can keep these larger sites running:)
I'm on Elliot Ave. W. in Seattle and what I'm wondering is why like every 20 mins. for the last like 3 hours have emergency vehichles been screeming by? I mean... what are they doing??
I think it is a bad thing... I think it is quite possible for a company like Microsoft in this day in age to become more powerful than a country's government. Microsoft seems to think they can get away with anything.... and I think perhaps they are correct. It seems to me that the recent FUD they had been spreading about Linux was only a plot to make people believe that Microsoft is more vulnerable then they really are. I don't believe that they perceive Linux as any kind of real threat and were only using the FUD to sway public perception... not away from Linux, but to divert the actions taken on them by the government. You may have heard it said (I know I have) that Microsoft kept claiming that they're company had seriouse threats and, thus, was not a monopoly. Blah... it's all about perception, and it can be very easily twisted.
It seems to me that it's this kind of attitude towards MS that keeps Slashdot going. It presents a sort of "against the grain" feel to the place. Things like "Your rights online" also help. But I agree with you somewhat. The facts in this one are misrepresented. I'm also one of these people who just plain likes Windows better than linux. I've used both extensively, and I've programmed on both. I used XP the other day.... it is really cool!
You can make that check payable to me;) But seriously, write them a note and let them know how you feel and why you are sending them the check... I'm sure it would make their day... I know it would make mine.
that's an interesting view Steeltoe. Brings up an interesting controversy as to how much power an individual has. keep in mind, groups such as corporations, government organizations and affiliations tend to have a sort of "group think" to them. A seperate conciousness and will that can, more often than not, be stronger than the individual. You say we have lost faith in the system.... Individuals have lost faith in the group... How many individuals truly think as an Individual? Not many. Many people may act as if they have lost faith in the system as a whole... but usually they have only lost faith in a sub-system of the system... opposing the subsystem they are a part of. From this view, the individual has much less power than you seem to think they do.
But then, how many of you have written non-portable software for Linux? You probably figured Windows sucks, and there was no reason to support it.
There are definetly people who write code for any OS without giving thought to how portable the code is. But if you use MFC it is MUCH more difficult to make your code portable. IMO using many of the Win32 API and DirectX features makes things fairly unportable. You have to write everything as if it had a wrapper around it.
If you're talking about the God in the Bible.... I don't think that what you just said could be farther from consistant with it. The whole folly of Satan was that he wanted to become as powerful as God. Also, it makes it very evident throughout the book that we are to be humble and understand that God is much bigger than us.. ]
I had actually thought of this before. Only, the reason I wanted it was to be able to make an HTML inerface to programs on my own computer. I made a skinnable app for windows once, that used HTML image maps as it's skins. I think this kind of things would be really useful and flexible as a program's interface.
Referring to what we know....

If it's really that revolutionary, maybe it's not anything you would just think of. Maybe it's not something from a si-fi movie or something like cold-fusion that has been posted about on slashdot before. It's strange that everyone keeps trying to fit it into their little world of ideas, when it could just as easily not fit into that world.
I agree.... I've been thinking a lot about how cool it would be to make a color handheld gaming system and make the directions available online... along with a set of open source API's and stuff. That would be sweet. But the one prob I've been finding is the expense of these displays.
Well, hopefully OpenAL will become more mainstreamed and it can be a companion to OpenGL. Then the code will be more portable too. OpenGL is making some big jumps lately, hopefully it will take over Direct3D. That doesn't really address DirectDraw.... but I'd say that if you're looking into serious developement, 2-d is sort of dying out. Maybe it'll be revived in a better form on graphics cards later... but for now...
Wait a second.... let me switch to my left hand...
Es Interesante!
NO WAIT! wait wait wait... hah it should've been
GNU/Windows 2001! HAHAHA! oh gosh I'm hilariouse.
Yeah... I think that was the only interesting bit of the interview.

If the ads don't work I think the major sites will go under. The advertisers won't be hurt as much because they still have TV and publications.
I am betting it was an alliance of several parties against the US. If that is true, this is probably not the end of what will be done to us.

I think Katz is under the delusion that he is living in a movie or something. Rise of the 15 year olds!

I use beanix. It's a lesser known *NIX variant. It runs on Coffee.
