  6. Definition of Refactoring on Rewrites Considered Harmful? · · Score: 1
    In case anyone else is just as clueless about what the heck refactoring is as I was here is the definition:

    "Definition & Example of Refactoring"

    • From above website (definitely worth the read):

      • Refactoring?
        In his book, Martin Fowler defines Refactoring as "the process of changing a software system in such a way that it does not alter the external behavior of the code yet improves its internal structure." In other words, you clean up your code but don't change what it does.

        Refactoring can be as simple as changing this code:

        $exclamation = 'I like '.$pastry.'!';

        To this:

        $exclamation = "I like $pastry!";

        Still does the same thing, but it's easier to read.

        It's important to note that I don't need to know anything about the contents of $pastry or how $exclamation is used. The change is completely self-contained and does not affect surrounding code or change what it does. This is Refactoring.

    No. My point is that I think the OS & software industry need to change. I think a little more longevity for their products is important both in terms of cost savings and for IT to put out a more reliable product to our clients.

    Microsoft's prodcuts down even get half way stable until their 3 year life cycle is just about over.

    Every 3 years we throw our clients into complete chaos. Why? Not because their current system doesn't do what they need it to do. But because we have to "stay current" with technology.

    Let's face it. My mom just doesn't need a new OS. She's barely adjusted to her current one.

Since we have been invited to fill out their contact forms we go ahead and do so. Now when all those insurance & mortgage firms pay the spammers $20 per lead they will get pissed that they paid for garbage. Suddenly prices per address will drop from $20 to $10 to $5 to .05. Eventually it will make it unprofitable to collect contacts this way. We don't fill in credit card information so we don't do anything illegal.
