    AltaVista still exists, right?

  2. Tax on the Math Challenged on IT Workers To Get Fewer Perks, No Free Coffee · · Score: 1

I worked for US Bank as a consultant at one of their *gigantic* warehouse cube-farms. They had stopped providing free coffee at the many "coffee centers" in the building, which I found incredibly short-sighted. Coffee is fuel. Programmer + Coffee = Productivity. To acquire said fuel, it was necessary to take a 15 minute round trip hike to the cafeteria on the other side of the building - for which I, of course, charged the time. $100/hr x .25 = $25. I made money going to buy coffee.

Canceling the Griswald X-mas bonus level stupidity - you're just going to end up kidnapped, tied up with a dog chain and presented to your employee wrapped in a ribbon. Everyone knows that.

  6. Java's hot today? on Followup On Java As "Damaging" To Students · · Score: 1

My introductory courses were taught in Java... almost 10 years ago. Java has proven itself beyond a flash in the pan, despite many significant failures (AWT or EJB 1.0, anyone?). I would propose this would qualify Java as a language to be respected, if for no other reason than A LOT of useful work has been accomplished with this pointer-less, self-garbage-collecting, virtual-machine-using, heathen half-breed of a tool.

  7. Possible Explanation on Brain Changes When Viewing Violent Media · · Score: 2, Interesting

I would propose that perhaps the age-old argument for the presence of violent media - that it mitigates real violence by offering a release valve - would be the explanation here. I'm not a neuro-scientist (IANANS), but wouldn't less activity mean that that portion of the brain is not working as hard at blocking violent impulses, maybe because there are fewer of these impulses?

could be written right on top.

however, game engines are a bit harder to create than 3d engines - it's like developing a programming language vs. creating an industry specific api.

the great thing here, though, is that the project's begun as os, so finding a team to do the game engine should be a natural evolution.

  10. Steal this movie on George Lucas Speaks on Trilogy Changes · · Score: 1

an audience lends power and validity to a work of art. what artists tend to forget is that w/o an audience art is meaningless and masturbatory. if that was the intended reason for the creation, so be it - but as soon as a work of art is public it is no longer sole property of the artist.
consensus makes something more than a lump of clay or a random wave of sound or a string of pictures.

I've got to agree completely. I'm fairly positive that having a phone on me all the time makes me *less* likely to call anyone. And I assume all my friends feel the same way, as they very rarely call me. Yeah, I'll blame that on technological alienation and just ignore my lack of hygiene...
