What moral outrage? I mean outside of Slashdot the rootkit was almost a non-story.
I think most people accept that big companies like Sony are spying on them. Hell, most people appear to be okay with their government spying on them, why not the people who make their TV?
This is my hope too. I know back in 2005, Microsoft had a backup plan for releasing DX10 on XP if things didn't work out for Vista/Longhorn.
I'm not a marketing guy, but I wonder how many Vista sales they would really lose if they had DX10 on XP? How many people have DX10 capable hardware running XP? Most users will have to buy new hardware to run DX10 game at all, and all the new machines I've seen come with Vista already.
But why buy a PS3 when you can play GTA4 on a box that cost $100 to $200 less and has exclusive extra content?
Plus, given the comparisons between the same games released on the PS3 and XBox360, so far the 360 games look better. Yes, this is probably an issue with the developers not taking full advantage of the PS3 hardware, but the fact remains.
So I guess my point is, to be a "killer PS3 app" its got to be better on, or exclusively for, the PS3.
Ah, but now you can compare it to the XBox Elite (est. $480) and the fact that to get a Wii you have to buy it second hand (starting at $379.95 on Amazon last I checked). For $859.95 you can buy a PS3 plus a game (or a laptop and a desktop machine with Linux;)).
When most people think "portable" they think about being able to use it outside of their home (on the train, at school, in line, etc.). Not just in other rooms of the house.
If you have experience program for the PS3 and don't mind 90-hour workweeks, I can help get you a job before the end of the week.
Otherwise, you'll be lucky to find an entry level job that will pay you well below the average and work you 90-hours. If you survive that job, and you are lucky enough to get some next-gen console experience, you can start making some serious money.
These people had "colorful" pasts to begin with, creating and selling video games about criminality didn't make them more criminal. More likely, they picked a topic they understood and/or admired.
Same thing with video game players. Look at the past of any crazy kid that shoots up a school. They didn't start with violent video games, more likely they had abusive parents, history of picking fights, violent friends, etc. These kids are obviously attracted to violent video games, but that's a result not a cause.
Video games are a long way from being the brain-washing/reprogramming tool the media makes them out to be.
"I predict that before Christmas, we'll start hearing about local newscasters doing "Shocking expose'" stories about how the PS3 is a portal for porn and child molesters to access your child."
Depends on how much control over the media Sony has. AFAIK Nintendo has no media ownership, Microsoft has a lot, and Sony...well, Sony is everywhere.
Thank you. The company I work for has been trying to hire a new programmer for months and we've yet to find a single person who can do even basic 3D math.
The problem is, we are working programmers 10-18 hours a day. As a result, we are burning out programmers, increasing turnover, and getting crappy results.
I spent well over 100 hours in GTA:SA and I never saw the "Hot Coffee" content. I'm guessing I probably missed a ton of little "Easter Eggs" in that game.
"Rather than releasing a single game with a wide array of music, they should release several titles with a focus on each type of music. The game engine could be the same in each, with only the songs differing."
Which I'm guessing is why Harmonix sold Guitar Hero to Neversoft. Harmonix likes doing the cutting-edge stuff. They could spend the rest of their life making "Guitar Hero: X-Edition" and never create something new.
Neversoft, on the other hand, likes to remake the same thing over-and-over again. They do a good job of it. Tony Hawk 20 will probably still be fun to play (as will "Guitar Hero 7: Polka Power").
There used to be great titles like Zork and X-Com. Then all the sudden everything had to be lobotomized so that people without imagination could play them.;)
Welcome to getting older (and at 20 no less), where the past is always better than the present. If you don't watch yourself, you'll be telling kids "Get off my lawn" before you turn 30.;)
If you don't want to hear about things in development, stop reading Slashdot and those stupid gaming mags.
Personally I'd rather EA doesn't "shit" out Spore like they do so many other titles. Sims is still selling well, let the development time have the time they need.
But seriously, it is a good thing Hitler never played videogames. If he did, he might not have started WWII and without WWII we wouldn't have 2/3 of our FPS games.;)
Other good titles would be: "Dr.Spin: What to do when your hype far exceeds your content", "Cost: How much is too much?", or "DRM: How to convince your users that it good for them."
I'll be interested to see if, in the end, anybody makes any real money but the lawyers.

I somehow doubt that any expo that allows kids under the age of 13 to attend is going to be anything like E3.
My guess is that it will look more like the worlds biggest GameStop than the professional hype-engine that fueled crazy talk in gaming rags.

I've payed far more than $200 to play a single game. Millions of people are spending $250 to bowl on their TVs (Wii).
If and when the killer game comes out for Vista I'll spend the $200 on Vista (plus another $200-$2000 to buy the right machine to run it).
With normal technology, next means next. But in the hype-fueled world of computer games, you are living in tomorrow today!
The PS3 is next generation, the PS2 is the current generation (you can tell by the sales ;)), and the PS4 is the next-next generation.
I've been living in the game industry so long that I eat my lunch at 8am, dinner is at noon, and I have tomorrow's breakfast at 7pm.

"Slashdot: News for NERDS"
If you can't be bothered to learn a new TLA then maybe you are on the wrong news feed?

For many reasons, you are not going to be able to use your PSP as a wireless display/controller for the PS3.
I fear you are stuck with watching Sex in the City (or buying a cheap TV to play your PS3 games on).

...will not be present at the E for All event.
You'll have to save your money and go to the Spearmint Rhino down the street.
"try out almost all of the Holiday releases in a finished state"
Or you can wait a month and play almost all the Holiday releases at your local Gamestop.
True.
Beware of putting the cart in front of the horse.
