I think GDC looks more professional than E3 in part *because* of the lack of media coverage. Add TV cameras, even to a GDC event, and everything changes...

Yes, the Shadowrun-Online team is a different creature entirely. They are the "indie dreamers". As far as I can tell they've got no budget, no publishing experience, and big dreams. They don't have the same worries as the "indie worker".

I love the "indie dreamers", and I wish these guys the very best (it would be nice to see a "Real" Shadowrun game), but you're right in thinking that $3000 for an ESRB rating is probably the least of their worries.

I guess my idea of "indie" developer isn't yours. Most of the indie developers I deal with are either self-supported or have very limited funding (hard to negotiate a big budget for your first title).

Depending on the scope of the game, team size, and location (Los Angles vs. China), $3000 can fund an extra week of development or the entire project. I have one developer who produces 3-7 games a year, almost all of them under $3,000.

My hope is that games like this will help legitimize video games as an art.

Yeah maybe that's a bit far fetched, but think about it: if every movie created was a simple action film ("Snakes of a Plane") or low-budget porno, nobody would consider movies an art form. It took films like "Birth of a Nation" (a highly controversial film, for good reason) before people took film seriously.

  8. Re:E for all on E3 Renamed Entertainment for All Expo · · Score: 1

The future of GDC is why I *want* this to get off the ground. And I want it for the same reasons you pointed out.

E3 was about feeding "hype" to the media while GDC was about sharing the reality of the industry with its workers. The reality of the game industry is different then the "reality" the marking people would like the general public to believe.

If GDC has to expand to make up for E3, you'll see far less real content and way more "hype". Large companies don't like showing unpolished products, they'd rather show CGI. Developers are not as "sexy" as booth babes (who are far less likely to tell dirty secrets about the company, or share code). The big names in the industry have already censoring the content of some of the seminars (compare the content of the first Halo seminars to the Halo2 seminars). If something doesn't happen real soon, GDC as you know it will stop and E3v2 will take its place
