  1. Typical Slashdot Math... on Xbox Losses Double, Xbox Shrinks · · Score: 1

Of course! 180 doubled is 348! No wonder they're always double-posting stories--they must be using some smaller value of 2, so they can never tell when the number of stories with the same topic has actually reached 2.

  2. Suggested use on Waterproof Books · · Score: 1

I suspect that this will do wonders for those who read in the bathroom. Now, if you drop your book into the tub or the toilet, your book won't be destroyed. Of course, not knowing how much more this would cost than paper makes it difficult to say how widespread it would be. (Yeah, yeah, rtfa... I know. Kinda hard when it's down.)
More likely, this will find its way into industrial manuals, so as to prevent damage in paper-hazardous environments.

  21. The problem with subscription-based software on Goodbye, "Majestic" · · Score: 1
This exemplifies the primary problem with subscription-based software, that being that now you have all these people who paid money for a game THEY'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO PLAY AGAIN. EA might not think it was successful enough to continue, but for those who enjoyed the game this is almost as good as simply writing a check to EA to say "thanks for being EA!".

Additionally, any software retailers who carry this just got screwed, since the software which might normally be available to be sold later (albeit at a discount price) just lost 100% of its value.

  22. Terraforming on Global Warming Mostly Confirmed - On Mars · · Score: 1

If Mars gets enough CO2 to support a plant atmosphere, then it's not terribly unlikely that we could try to start terraforming the planet. All we'd need is to find a nice little phytoplankton-type algae that'll thrive there, and before you know it we'd be able to produce a breathable atmosphere.
Of course, we'd have to find a goodly source of N, but there's probably enough of that elsewhere on the planet that could be freed up in other ways.
The alternative, of course, would be to cross-breed plants and humans so that they'd use a chlorophyl-based metabolism instead of the current human-based solutions. Then, they'd be able to breath and metabolize the CO2 in much the same way that we do O2.
With the change in diet that would be necessitated, I expect that such plant-human mixtures would be several feet shorter than your average human.
More to the point, we'd have to create little green men and invade Mars.

  24. Other laptop vendors... on What Do You Think of ASUS Laptops? · · Score: 1
I can't speak for Asus's laptops, but I found the Dell Inspiron 8100 to be quite tasty. 15" UXGA (1600x1200) screen, 32mb GeForce2Go, both a touchpad AND a nub, and the internal mini-pci was even supported in BeOS!

Of course, they're not cheap at ~$2400 maxed out, but so worth it if you're looking for top o' the line.

Though, (and this holds for any laptop manufacturer) you should really shop around for laptop memory instead of having the manufacturer install it. To have Dell max out my laptop (at 512mb PC133 SoDIMM's) would be over $600, but when I ordered the memory myself, I only paid $120. Sure, I had to take a screwdriver to it, but I figure that it was more than worth the $500 I saved by doing it myself.
