Bear in mind that MSN uses inktomi, a pay-for-inclusion search engine./offtopic
I will, but there is a big difference between
being able to pay to be on top,
and having to pay to get on the results list at all. I mean, let's be serious for a while.
43 search results for "GNU" on MSN and
11,600,000 on Google?
300,000 times less?
Isn't that just too much to be tolerated any more?
It is like Yahoo giving zero results for "freedom" searches from China. I mean, come on!
This is the real reason people don't know about GNU, not some stupid secret OEM deals!
The only proprietary MMPOLRPG I have played
was Ultima Online a year or two ago.
My heroine had a greek version of my real name, but when I tamed a wolf, I named my beast "Assassin."
Then, after clicking on my wolf I kept seeing "******in!" or something like that and I had no idea why.
After few hours of playing
I kept wondering why on Earth my other wolfs,
namely Killer and Murderer,
had no such problem with their names
whatsoever,
only to realise
that Ultima Online was censoring vulgar language...
I remember that I was really asshamed that someone could see me while calling my wolf and I stopped playing for few days.
When I follow the link to your "SID that never gets archived," whatever that means, I get this message: "Nothing for you to see here. Please move along." What is going on? Who are those krouts, ekrouts, surakrouts and other/.*outs/?
This is not the first time I get annoyed this way.

to have some idea how I have been treated here on Slashdot.
Could anyone please explain me what is going on?
I hope someone will explain it and finally end this farse.
And please don't use such subjects because they not only look stupid, but they also make the page wider than my browser window.
Thank you.
well, that's great if you code your own stuff, but shutting the warnings and strictness off if you are not the only coder on a team is not exactly a good idea. others might not be as good as you are.
Do you even realise how incompetent and internally inconsistent your words are?
Because you do know the syntax and lexical scope of pragmata, as well as the semantics of use and no keywords, right? *sigh*
Of course it is not
WorldForge, no doubt, but for a proprietary software it sounds quite interesting. I also had no idea it is so popular. Could it be because of PR and marketing?
I do not really think so.
"Quick and Dirty" vs. "Correct and Proper"?
That is not a good question.
That is not a good question at all.
Where is e.g. "Quick and Correct"?
I am not sure about other people, but this is how I presonally prefer to work.
And no, using no strict and no warnings pragmata does not necessarily mean my code is "dirty." I exactly know what I am doing.
Before you deploy any license-free wireless wide-area network I have one word: Do not do it. A friend of mine has been busted for doing exactly that.
Explain?
What do you want me to explain?
I have a friend.
He has built a wireless wide-area network.
He has done it without a license.
He got busted.
End of the story.
What else could I possibly explain?
If your colleagues are all familiar with LaTeX and CVS, then use MS Word, because when you graduate from college, you'll realize that nobody in the *real world* uses LaTeX and CVS (programmers know CVS, researchers know LaTeX).
This is not funny. Not at all. Whoever has moderated it as such is apparently out of her mind.
I am being very serious right now.
I hope the person who has marked my post as funny will admit and correct her terrible mistake. Thank you.
Well, as a matter of fact, yes, I have.
(This is probably the most stupid question I have ever answered.)
Given the MS Office bias we see in the article, I doubt the average computer user the poster suggests would be able to understand (much less be productive with) the sophisticated combination of software you present as a solution.
Please forgive me that I
(quite foolishly, as you imply)
assumed that those are in fact intelligent and literate people.
Starting from MS Office, I wouldn't expect anyone in this scenario to migrate to the process you recommend.
Are you trying to suggest that I should not
recommend a good, meritoriously optimal solution becuse those people are in your opinion too incompetent to follow my advice?
How convenient.
However terribly sorry to disappoint you I might be, I will never assume that people whom I talk to are so stupid. Never. I am sorry.
Could SCO lawsuit possibly be about the money?
I mean the money is all it is about?
By which I am asking if they really want to get the money and nothing more?
I am shocked!
I would have never thought about it!
How have they figured it out?
Was there some internal memo leakage?
Industrial espionage?
Sabotage?
This is a really great news, I must admit it, even if somewhat old, but actually very few people are doing it, and it is not even the first time such a thing is possible for PS2 users.
The question though is "Why?" Why should most of the users bother with such an "exploitation" while even most of the MSIE users don't bother to change their starting URL? I mean, why most of Windows users have no idea what does GNU mean? Could it be because of
Results 1-15 of about 43 containing "GNU" on MSN while
Google gives Searched the web for GNU. Results 1 - 10 of about 11,600,000. Search took 0.07 seconds.?
I mean, let us be serious here for a second.
Most of people don't care about anything. All they want is play games, play games, and then play some games. That's it. Freedom? Philosophy? Human rights? They just don't care as long as they have TV, pop music, video games, fast food and a new Saddam or Osama to kill and blame for their misery from time to time.
This may be sad, but that is the truth.
But let's stay on-topic.
This is great news, I'm sure everyone will agree with me.

The solution would be to send
few CEOs to jail because their companies' products were in spam.
We should go after people who earn money thanks to spam, since they are easy to track down,
not the spammers themselves, as they often
try to hide their identity.
I'm sure other CEOs would at the very least stop to think about it. It is actually quite simple. As I am sure you all know, I have said it many times before. I have no idea why no one is listening though.
I am still using 1.3 on my production systems but 2.0 seems to be quickly getting to the point where it could be safely used on a mission critical boxen. I am sure I will use it as soon as 2.0 is the default version on Debian stable.
It is really great this story is on the front page of Slashdot, even though Slashdot itself is still using 1.3.26, which is a shame, since 2.0 seems to be ready already, and there is 1.3.27 available. I think we should all say thanks
to
Ben Laurie,
Jeff Trawick,
Yoshioka Tsuneo,
William Rowe, Jeff Trawick, André Malo,
and others which I cannot recall right now,
for making the most secure httpd in the world even more secure than before. Thanks!
Some people I have spoken with few days ago about this research told me they are worried that if the intelligence is too high this AI could refuse to risk its money gambling... I am not quite sure if they were serious though.
This is the one time when I think Soviet Russia jokes are on topic.

The WorldForge Project.
Should I say more? No. That is because
the most interesting research in this field is being discussed on The WorldForge Project's
public
mailing lists, which I strongly urge you to subscribe to.
(But before you post any questions there
please make sure to read the FAQ.)
My own experience on this very field is this: let everyone write TeX, LaTeX and PostScript using her favourite text editor (vi or Emacs) and use Concurrent Versions System (CVS) to seamlessly combine it all together. On the CVS server have makefiles and use GNU make(1) to generate PostScript (using tex(1) and dvips(1)--remember to use scalable PostScript Type 1 fonts for better results with resolutions over 600dpi) and PDF (using pdftex(1)). That way you have a completely free-software solution, and, as a nice side effect, you have the output with much higher quality than you could ever expect from Microsoft Office (or Open Office for that matter) thanks to Don Knuth.
Remember that Microsoft Office, unlike TeX, is not a type setting system, but merely
an office grade "word processor." The difference is huge, but frequently overlooked. In short, Word is good for clueless secretaries sending faxes, while TeX is good for professional typesetters and typographers working in the real publishing industry preparing the most important and the most beautiful books for print.
You have to always make sure which solution fits your needs better.
I hope this will help you. Good luck.
Ass-Hamed? The point is that Assassin was a wolf, which was tamed... Oh, never mind.
