  1. Re:Stupid power grab on FCC Claims Regulatory Power Over Home Computers · · Score: 1

HDTV is presentation, the scripts and acting, game, etc is the content. The only thing I don't have is the HDTV presentation. I don't particularly care about that.

I have an HDTV and an HD cable box. But I don't use it to watch HDTV; I use it to downconvert the HD channels to SD so I can record it with my standalone TiVo. This works great for me and I end up watching timeshfited the downconverted HD feed instead of the SD feed.

I would consider watching HD programming in HD format if my HDTV could do 1080i in the correct aspect ratio. Unfortunately it is a 4:3 HDTV and won't vertically compress the image for 16:9 presentation. (I want my next HDTV to be able to accept HD content from my computer. I want to generate my own rendered content and preview on a real HDTV.)

Except for Friday night CBS programming when JAG gets incessant pops in the audio, making me think they're trying to time compress it to fit in another 30 second local commercial.

I would agree with you that HD is only a presentation perk, but only when the SD presentation is letterboxed, and will continue to be merely a presentation perk as long as the HD data is locked down.

Series1 TiVos though can't share shows between them anyway, and will reproduce Macrovision on their outputs if Macrovision was present on the inputs. Saving HBO Macrovisioned content, PPV, and VOD to tape in an analog manner still won't have acceptable results without intermediary video signal processing. (Or so I'm told; I haven't performed any tests.)

However, it is a lot easier to extract the video digitally from a Series1 than a Series2, and most standalone models (all Philips standalones) can be used fine without service, requiring a little maintenance once a year (eventually they stop repeating their manual recordings which will need to be recreated, and log files can fill up if they can't call home).

Still, I may take one off-line briefly to run a fresh backup. My old backups, on CD, may have worn out by now. And I still have my never-subscribed unmodified 20hr unit.

Looks like this will put a damper on thoughts on using Halo 2's engine for redvsblue for awhile, unless Rooster Teeth get provided a special release that does have LAN play enabled, or can switch the screen to show only one player's POV even with four playing at once.

It would also limit them to having only three characters on screen at once without adjusting it in post (one player is the camera).

It's possible Bungie could give them a special version, but then Bungie could have also given them a versio of Halo that disabled the camera player fidgeting with his gun which can ruin otherwise perfectly good takes, or even so they wouldn't need to letterbox it and eliminate the target circle.

Otherwise I may find it difficult to fit in CD-RW, DVD+/-R(W) +DL, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray drives in a single case with only two 5.25" bays with front access for maximum access speeds and compatibility. (Dedicated CD-RWs tend to be able to read and burn CDs faster than multi-format DVD burners. And presuming something in that set still has DVD-RAM compatibility.)

If they could halve the height of each drive (would that be quarter-height or eighth-height drives now?), maybe it would work with an additional controller installed.

Before any thing productive could be done the wallpaper had to be set up.

Next came setting up the screen saver.

You need wallpaper set up before you can be productive? Just to be clear, you're talking about the background graphic that gets covered over by your application windows, especially the maximized ones, all the time?

And then what's the productive part but setting up the screensaver!? That program that wastes processor cycles and only runs when you're not even there? And somehow setting up the wallpaper first was necessary for this?
This is a work computer and dual monitors are mainly used to increase productivity...

This is really great when I have my music folder open at all times on the second monitor

I can't really figure out a way to quantify my increase in productivity, but it is there.

The productivity increase lasted for about two days. At this point I realized that I could to work on one monitor and watch a full screen DVD on the other.

I think I can quantify your productivity increase. You've saved the time that it takes to switch between working and goofing off. Before you could only do one or the other; now you can do both at the same time!
Having a idyllic 1280x1024 photograph in the periphery of my vision seems to help keep me calm and composed when I find myself at my computer for hours on end.

You know, you can get that same effect by putting a picture on your desk, and it doesn't draw as much power. Really, your most productive use of your second screen is to display a static image?

I find it difficult to believe you even work in an office environment, and if indeed you work from home, I should let you know that they have these glass-covered portals in walls that offer a view of the outside world. Coincidentally, they are also called "windows". Try moving your computer closer to one.

And I still come away with nothing about what your work is, other than it involves word processors and possibly spreadsheets. If it is writing articles for the web, you could have at least touched on having your research materials on one screen and composing your articles on another. If you were a coder, you could be viewing the application on one screen and tracing code execution in a debugger on another.

Sorry, but your article is useless. It's nothing but talking about your new toy and you really offer no work benefits to the configuration other than it makes your goofing off more efficient.

There are those of us who are trying to get dual monitors in our workplace. If management goes by articles like yours, they'll only see them as tools for more goofing off in the workplace and refuse the requests.

The most egregious [changes] in my opinion is Greedo shooting first.... If it really is about the rating of the movie, I wish he'd just say that from the horse's mouth.

MPAA ratings may have also been a factor in the shooting of imperials and why some show the impact flash and others don't. The site claims there's inconsistency. I think there is consistency: the impacts are only removed for the characters who weren't wearing body armor.

So it's as if they were told they can show armor evaporating in a flash of light, but not flesh. So you get left with the implied searing flesh and not the (FX-simulated) sight of it.

Granted, I haven't watched my box set yet to see if my theory is correct.

Still, even if it is the MPAA restricting him in theaters, he could have restored it for an unrated DVD "director's cut" release. (Although that release might be kept out of Wal*Mart.)

I don't want to be a player; I want to be a fan in the stands and being treated to a performance by good players. And with voice communication, you could get vocal crowd participation. Have real people cheering you on instead of a cheer-track.

And perhaps you could get such MMO sports games going by first starting out with teams against a computerized league to build up the teamwork of the human players, then open it up to team vs. team play.

The system can come with rules enforcement to include establishing a team, enforced benching by coaches, and even ejection from the game.
