"First off, archy, computer systems are not 100% safe except for the users. Non-users, i.e. outsiders with technical knowledge, are responsible for cracking as much as stupid users. Design flaws, too, cause many computer problems. "
Whether they are authorized or not, crackers are USERS of the system. Can't get ANYTHING or ANYWHERE without using the system, but point taken. Now I agree there has to be a tradeoff between security and useability, especially in passwords but c'mon people I run "John" here alot on my shadow files and people using their first names ?!?!, 1234567, password...etc. If you do not use a dictionary and enforce some minimum standard people will end up with a blank passowrd trust me.
and what the hell is the 49.95 a month I pay for ??? Just because the advertisers feel they are losing POTENTIAL to sell me crap I don't want I should worry..Hardly...Let the cable providers and the networks get together and decide on a way to split the funds. I'll be damned if I am gonna sit still and let them dictate HOW I watch as well as WHAT I watch.
news, and in other news, Computer systems are 100% safe except for the users. Anyone who has been in any sort of IT environment can tell you this, and probably for a whole lot les money than the consulting firm charged. Unless your policy is enforced and dictionary used on passwords, (L)Users will compromise security for ease of use almost ALL the time.
err this is Jon Katz sorry silly question.. Just call VISA, tell them you made a valiant effort to cancel your account but support is not co-operating, PLEASE NO LONGER ACCEPT CHARGES FROM EARTHLINK/AOL....Simple and done is 5 minutes, but then you'd not have anything to whine about you poster child for birth control.
I fail to see how the interest of the customers enters into this at all. It MUST be in SONY/EA's interest or there would be no discussion. I am cynical but I've worked for large corporations for a long time. Maybe you are right and they deserve a pat on the back, but I doubt it, I am just waiting for the other shoe to fall. I am betting it will become an issue of who controls the info, not whether it is captured and sold.
I am sorry but when a CORPORATION, in business to make money does something that doesn't overtly make them money I get suspicious. If you honestly believe that Sony is concerned about 'integrity' and 'respect' over 'bottom-line' and 'profit' then more power too you, but I don't. I think that behind this little PR war you will find a PROFIT motive for both companies, and BOTH will be at our, the consumers expense, in $$'s and privacy.
while the mars series was quite good,I'd hardly call KSR a dominate force. When he add's another 5 books to his list maybe I will start echoing that sentiment.
and the fact that the companies are run by total morons should be my problem:) I was on a 12 month contract with pac-bell when they re-did the news groups. It took a photocopy of my contract but I was payed off for the remaining time and they acknowledged that they broke the contract. I kept the equipment and got money back...read those contracts:)
if not worse, and we'd just be trading one set of ignorant asslickers for another. Kazaa has shown such great business acumin with brilliant digital. I'd not trust them to steal from me let alone provide a service I would pay for even if it was decent.
If your techies can't understand Linux then they are NOT TECHIES. What you have is the "I am an Authority guys" who claim to speak for ANY and EVERYTHING. They are really hard to get around with out DOCUMENTATION to contradict them, usually ON THE SPOT as they can't handle being held up under a light...
wonder if any of these so called professionalswill be willing to pay 3 to 4 times the cost for the same service. Will this gated community assume financial laiblity for their members' ? I doubt that like hell so what you end up getting is a web site for 3 times the cost in a domain that has no draw, or history...sorry I think I will remain in the.com and deal with the rest of the internet minus the gated community BS. But hell people pay for useless names and less ervice all the tmie so I bet this go overs big at first. Who the hell goes and looks for a Dr. or other specialist via the internet anyways. I would think Dr. referral was the single biggest ad these guys could have.
fix it so I can play my games on somthing other than M$ and I will finish removing it. Loki was a poor bastard step child with the right idea but no way to stay current in the market. I am NOT interested in playing an online game 8 months after the online community has moved on. I am a solaris admin, who uses linux by choice but I am also an AVID gamer and there is no real alternative to the M$ OS for good, CURRENT games.
"and yesy peguins do like to play too so there are plenty of games too."
I'd hardly call a 6 month old port of a game..plenty but hey you can play what you want.
exactly what we did...block ports and make them send you a note detailing why they want a specific port open. Most people will realize how stupid what they're asking is if they have to sit down and write it out. errr please open these ports so I can run my p2p software to pirate music using school resources...umm maybe I better not send that one:) Use SECURITY as the overall kicker, in order to maintain the security and integrity of the network it is essential the Admin knows whats going on. BTW if you do get a moron asking for P2P ports forward it to the rest of the staff for a good laugh.
Follow the examples of the Bastard Operator from Hell and you cannot go wrong:)
how is this more unconstitutional than the movie theatres refusing to allow minors admintance to R rated movies ? Don't get me wrong this is CRAP, another example of the government trying to parent instead of doing what they are there for, but I see this going through. In the 'NEW' facist america it is better to protect the potential for abuse than deal with reality. Beware the HomeLand Defense for will come for you.
Corporations are NOT people, they should NOT have rights.
"Well before the advent of "personhood," corporations had already been granted the privilege of limited liability -- a key component of their immense legal power. What cemented the corporate position more than anything else, however, was the 1886 US Supreme Court ruling in a railbed dispute titled Santa Clara County vs. Southern Pacific Railroad. The ruling held that a private corporation was a "natural person" entitled to all the rights and privileges of a human being. It was one of the greatest blunders in legal history, and it triggered the corporations' 100-year march to global power. "
you think the unemployment here in Cali is better, maybe slightly but competition is 10 times worse, traffic sucks, the cost of living borders on ludicrous. I love this area but it is getting BEYOND insanity...
thats good to hear. I do not own a gateway, but my brother does and his warranty DID require their service. We voided it and I corrected the problem and his machine runs nicely now.
they are the same as the RIAA/MPAA they just don't have the $$ yet to buy the political muscle. Look at their PC agreements. Open the box void the warranty, it MUST be serviced at Gateway. I would not buy a computer from them what makes you think I'd buy music from them ? Just because someone is competing with the Music Behemoths does not make them our friend, probably the exact opposite. Stand up for yourselves, you are NOT consumers, you are CUSTOMERS, and need to be treated with some respect.

but by the same token I should then be able to go get an OS browser and be sure of being safe, err as safe as can be on an M$ OS....
