  1. Re:Zero out tax dollars to NPR: NOW on NPR Finds XM's Achilles Heel · · Score: 1

Idiot. It's just because NPR is generally on the lower uncrowded side of the spectrum. Couple this with the fact that FM retransmitters use that area too. Now imagine that the tiny amount of power that the FCC allowed to these retransmitters was increased by a factor of 5. Forty or fifty feet and a crystal clear signal, instead of right next to the antenna as intended. NPR isn't the only one getting trampled by XMs desire to integrate with the FM band...many other stations are too.

XM is entirely in the fault here, by not adhering to FCC regulations regarding power levels. NPR is just an interested party.

According to that eMusic link, InGrooves handles your e-distribution for a small chunk of the profit. A very common practice for small indie labels. IODA is another big one. With those services, you sign an agreement and they just start the juggernaut moving - you would have to specifically opt-out of individual sites. As an aside, there is no album art on the eMusic link. Might want to have a chat with your interns.

Cost is not the only way potential customers determine value.

The only musicians with a tip jar are sitting on street corners with a coffee can in front of them. Not a _good_ living, but a living I guess.

Exactly. In this case, it's 10% of a complete product at 10% the cost. Why couldn't they just make us wait so we can pay the whole thing at one time, in November of 2007?

Episodic entertainment like TV shows and some of the great movie trilogies of the past should have been released all at once, on DVD, at a cost of $199. Why should I enjoy part of an incomplete product?

Oh, I agree with all of those things. I'm willing to sit through an episode of the Simpsons with a little static on the TV because it's funny and I enjoy it enough to ignore the lack of fidelity. I'm not saying the earbud users aren't enjoying their entire collection of tunes, or are unsatisfied with the sound quality. I'm just saying that if _I_ were to buy a cutting-edge $3k HDTV it would be silly of me to sit around watching distant broadcast signals with rabbit ears when an HD Tivo adds only ten percent to the cost. I'd do it for the content I love, but given the choice why not get the full modern experience?
