I don't know about "running for his life". The evacuations have been pretty orderly so far as I can tell ( Poway, CA, right in the little pocket ). And they have been called in plenty of time for most, AFAICT. Maybe sauntering for his life. Promenading? I don't see a lot of panic.
Oh, and he is probably at Qualcomm stadium, pretty safe.
Customers throwing a fit has never bothered the telco's before. I mean, did you read the article about the old woman with the claw hammer yesterday? That was a fit. Did you read the VP's response? "Unique and inappropriate".
They will become modern highwaymen, sitting across the lanes of commerce, taking a much value as they desire out of everything that passes by, and adding no value whatsoever. Till no one will go by, because they have made it impossible, ruining everything for everyone, including themselves.
But if the source of the error was the CEO, the firing the peons does nothing good for the company. The problem still exists. And the health of the company took a dip, potentially, as the workers fired might have been competent, the incompetent is still there, and the remaining workers will see this, and they usually are not fooled, and will be demoralized, lowering their productivity temporarily, and the best of the people there will be more likely to move to another company.
Has nothing to do with hating managers "on principal". Has nothing to do with fair.
"So I think her retirement savings and house are safe."
Technically, maybe, but practically, maybe not.
She might have a house payment to go with that house. And other payments that have to be made. If she had debt going into this, she still needs to service that. So, add payments on 222k onto that. Does she have to pay interest on this? Interest rates for a house are at 6+ percent, cars are 7+, but this is an unsecured-by-collateral debt, so, the interest will be higher. So, she just got a second payment that is probably around her house payment, or higher. Can she fit that in her budget? So, practically, in order to service this court ordered debt, she might have to sell or allow herself to go into foreclosure on the house. She will have to pay rent somewhere, so there will still be something for housing expenses, maybe she will have to borrow from her savings ( if she has any aside from retirement ), maybe including retirement. I dont know her details, obviously, but nothing is safe.
"although it was a political play by US leaders to goad Japan into an attack that could be used to rally support for the War in the US."
I have to disagree with you...
FDR wanted in the war, no doubt about that. He wanted in the war with Germany, however, not Japan. The Tripartite pact ( the treaty between the Axis partners ) was defensive, there was no agreement that Germany would declare war on Japan attacking the US. Germany declared war on the US on Dec 11, 1941, IIRC.
In fact, a war with Japan would have been seen as tying up resources that the US was sending to Britain and Russia thru the Lend-Lease agreements, so war with Japan would put at risk the assistance the US was giving Britain. The US did not know at the outbreak of war that she had the strength to take on both Germany and Japan. She only knew that at the end.
"The US had threaten to prevent Japan's further expansion into the Pacific, "
You realize that that expansion
A: threatened the US and
B: was coming at the expense of friends and allies of the US,
as well as any uncolonized peoples in the area. I think
colonialism was wrong, but replacing colonies of the west
with Japanese colonies ( the "Greater East Asian Coprosperity
Sphere" ) is no improvement.
"and the US repeatedly denied any sort of conference to negotiate any sort of peace that would enable the Empire of Japan to gather much needed resources to fuel their war machine."
The US and Japan were in talks over issues in China and the strife between the two nations. Kurutsu (sp?) was sent to the US, nominally, to help the existing Ambassador with this. So, no, the US was not rolling over saying "take anything you want, just leave us alone". The US was a major trading partner with Japan, sending steel ( I am sure of ) and I think oil to Japan. Then in 36, Japan invaded China, and the US objected. Japan did not pull out, so the US started a trade embargo to register their displeasure.
But you don't invest in something just because it is a big risk, and therefore might well be a large return. You have to be bought into the dream of what it is going to be, you have to believe and act on that belief.
I don't, in my heart, believe that EBay saw anything except the possibility of money.
"So rather than skin the consumers for every cent, they keep a good-value proposition."
That is it in a nutshell.
America could have the same, except no one will sign up, because they know from their basic cell phone experience that they will be taken for a ride. People are not fooled for long.
I have spent the last several years wrapped in duct tape, just in case I get it all figured out. A tip, put a layer sticky side *out*. Least if you have hair on your body.

He paid for it! Of course he got it!
"The Constitution allows the President to suspend civil liberties ".
Then why doesn't he have the testicles to come out and *say*
that, rather trying to slip something over.
And that suspension is supposed to be temporary, for the
duration of the emergency.

Stupid.
I could but the "button" underneath would still be there.
Perhaps you could find me a keyboard without an enter key at all?
I think you meant 'User is complaining, "cancel" or "deny"?'
Since I dont have either, maybe I should switch her.
I have nothing to lose, apparently.
I don't know. I just do. My pinky hits
the return key, and once writ, I move on.
I know it annoys some, and I am sorry for that.

Then she can file bankruptcy - all of that may be protected.
Depends on the bankrupcy proceedings.

I get those from my family, too.
There are many amoung the humour impaired here.

I shouldn't worry about it.
I would quit smoking though. If too much comes out,
you might stop working.
Certainly they own the smoke!
Read the fine print! Like with software, you
have not purchased the software, only leased
the right to use.
Capsaicin, stop reading now.
Ok, the rest of you guys. How long can I keep
the joke running?
What about second hand smoke?
I think the tobacco companies should sue
everyone for enjoying their products at
second ( or even third ) hand.

Yes, I am trying to teach my kids to share your stuff.
So far, nothing. Maybe if you gave me your address....
The other half will have crashed already.
All that and more.

That is a factor.
But as long as "success" is defined by earnings, and
lawyers and doctors are paid more than engineers,
the smart ones will pick this way.
