Until the penalties outweigh the revenue, what's going to make MS stop? This 300lb gorilla is going to keep stomping on the little people (Linux, FreeBSD and otherS) unless something changes. In addition... Even if this didn't exist MS still has a stranglehold on the software available for personal computers, everything from Games to Applications. That's the next hurdle.
Security updates are supposed to be exempt from the check.
Since when? I recall using an unauthorized version of Windows for a 2nd box of mine and when I attempted to update at windows.com it wouldn't allow me to download anything (including SP1 and SP2.) The only difference I see with this press release is now they will ask you if you want to squeal on your pirated source (Bambino's don't do this) or purchase a legitimate copy. Is this what it has come to for MS? A sub-standard online satellite program and now a ho-hum press release on Windows?
/sigh
What happened to the days of Balmer dancing to "Get on your feet"? now THAT was newsworthy.
This has scapegoat written all over it and has a striking resemblance to the Kevin Mitnick detention. I find it questionable the government claims he caused 900k USD in damages. How can that be? System cleaning, turning on security (which should have been on already)? Their ineptness lead to this breach of "security", if anything they should thank Gary for pointing out their shortcomings... Better him than a terrorist.
I beg to differ. Tell me this... When is the last time you've really gotten excited about something NASA was doing? The mars rovers??? The blowing up of some inconsequential comet passing by??? I think this is a brilliant move for them, as it will actually make people give a damn about the space program and be more willing to allow the government to spend money on such endeavors.
This is the perfect opportunity for the United States to peak childrens interest in science and mathematics classes. NASA should go to local schools to hang posters inspiring kids to set their goal on becoming an astronaut.
I also think NASA ought to prepare the american people by making it clear human lives will be lost in this endeavor. With the last two disasters (Columbia and Challenger) each time it setback their mission years. In an industry such as this people must be made to understand it's not an accident, rather a probability.
I can't help but feel this isn't the solution people need. Rather, more cities should take the stand Philadelphia has by attempting to provide WiFi for the entire city http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20040901-4149.html
Unfortunately, in lieu of Florida recently prosecuting a man for unauthorized WiFi access http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/07/07/wi.fi.theft.ap/ until we find an alternative - this product is necessary.
sorry bout the subject, had to jump at the opportunity to tag one of my fav movies:)
I wouldn't be surprised if HP Execs got wind of him wanting to resign, so they beat him to it. This would save HP from an embarassing loss (someone jumping ship) and make it look like they were just "cleaning house."
I find it interesting that MSN has 15.7%, which is entirely due to new installations of Windows setting IE's homepage to msn.com. Without that I'd bank their percentage would hover somewhere around the minus. IMO Google has no competitors in terms simplicity and results.
I think a book of this type is desperately needed, and I applaud the author. I for one am so tired of going to meetings where you get the "ass-kisser" type who can talk like a bigshot (yet does NONE of the work) taking all the credit. I work alongside some of the most brilliant engineers who are always overlooked for promotions or new opportunities simply because they aren't good at presenting or adding the burecratic fluff for managers who don't know a damn about what's involved behind the scenes.
The worst VOIP provider had an availability of 94.8% (which isn't bad)
I disagree entirely! When someone's life may depend on a call going through (911) I would say anything below 99.99 (repeating) is unacceptable.
In addition...
There is another problem with using VOIP. When the internet goes down your VOIP phone may go with it. We use VOIP phones at work and I recall a situation last year where a hacker brought our internet connection to its knees (hence no VOIP phones) and everyone was running around like a chicken with their head cut off trying to figure out how to make calls. Our solution was to use cell phones for back-up, but I couldn't help but point out if we had regular phones we would have avoided the problem entirely.

I frequently visit http://www.archive.org/ to pull up sites no longer available. They typically have the content of sites, less the images.
Someone *could* theoretically get 24 dvd's/month from Netflix http://www.netflix.com/ for $19.99 USD and copy them for free...and I'm sure they might even find a title or two they've actually heard of. Not that "The Killer Shrews" isn't on my Top 10 list.
Why don't they just takeover IBM's facilities?

I can't decide if the Sharp Zaurus is the 3rd or the "4rth" one.
