  1. A Measured Response to Police Brutality on Youtube Video Prompts FBI Probe of LAPD · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've witnessed police brutality first hand before. An officer handcuffed a college kid when he tried to walk away from a speeding ticket, then the officer pushed him agaisnt the hood of the cop car (burning the kids cheek) and then pepper sprayed the kid right to the eyes (after handcuffing him and inflicting 2nd degree burns to the kids face). That was the third incident in a year for that officer and he didn't even get suspended. I was a witness in the civil case against the station, the kid's family won $150,000. I thought that was an exorbinant amount for a pinched nerve, burnt cheek, and stinging eyes but whatever.

Anyway, the video on youtube is a little brutal but I don't think either officer should be fired. Maybe a short suspension for the guy punching the perp in the face, because that is not a move that helps get the suspect into custody. We also have no idea what that guy did before the video starts. He might have just shot a little girl, spit in the cop's face, or jay walked. We have no idea what the context was, so it's hard to pass judgement. Either way, that wasn't all that brutal, at least he wasn't hitting the dude with his mag-light.

I have had a few bad experiences with the police (like the one mentioned above) and believe that it is always better not to get them involved. However, I have also had police save me from a machete weilding maniac that had me pinned in my bedroom (adn believe me, I wanted them to kick the crap outta him). They are necessary, and I think we should all try to keep open minds. Besides, I'm a rarity, a nerd who parties and gets involved with shady people. THeir probably aren't very many people on /. who have ever dealt with the police for more than a speeding ticket. I think most people who don't deal with the police very much have a negative view towards them (as brutal or power tripping or whatever) and that is messed up because you are the people the police are protecting. Sooo, support the boys in blue!

One day, about 4+ years ago, when I was working at a porn shop, this Russian computer scientist came in. He seemed pretty smart and was yakkin about optical computers and some project he had worked on in the 90's in Russia or something. Anyway, he said this would happen, the return of the paralell mainframe. He said that we were reaching the limits of current silicon and copper materials. With optical still a long way out, he said we would probably build mainframes for a while again. He also said CPUs made out of diamonds with optical high speed interfaces were the future but nobody was putting money into it (for various reasons...), and that was why he didn't have a job. He said he figured companies would be clamoring for peopel like him once the materials, like manufactured diamonds, were more readily available. I still believe him, but nobody ever listens to me when I talk about that guy. I met quite a few kewl people at the 'ole porn ship actually.

Once again I feel pigeon holed and stereotyped by someone who thinks that all (or most, which is nearly as bad) Americans are like this or that... Everyone is different damn it! SO I;m probably one of the only people that visists this site that actually was a "journeyman" produce guy and have dealt with ordering and throwing out massive quatities of produce for various stores (Vons, Henrys, and Bristol Farms). Any good produce manager already knows what he's got in his cooler and how ripe it is, without some sticker to mislead him. Sometimes different fruit give off different amounts of gas at the same ripeness level depending on where it was grown, how long in it was in cold storage, etc... Since produce is in the USA is constantly coming in from all over the world, I don't think these stickers would be very reliable. Also I don't think the stickers would help much with waste because buyers over order on purpose when they can get a good deal. Buyers and district managers will push the dept managers to order more as well to get it outta the warehouse before it goes bad too. A lot of the time, (unlike other grocery items) produce sales (5 grapefruit for a dollar etc...) are based on availability of particular crops at good prices. THe buyer will order a crapload, the chain puts 'em on sale and hope that the product sells before they go bad. Cold storage can make some produce items last surprisingly long (several months sometimes) but a LOT of the time stores end up throwing out tons of the stuff, totally wasteful, but hey thats capitalism! I think the only thing these stickers would be good for would be to inform customers that don't know when their fruit is ripe. However, the afformentioned problems would still arise and it is doubtful that they would be very reliable. I think this was mentioned in the article, but don't know for sure cause I don't have time to read it - typical /. style ;-)

I just think the industry is super corrupt and CDs are way too expensive. Most of the money goes to executives, and the vast majority of musicians in this coutry languish in poverty. If they were paid based on how much money venues could charge for a performance, then their ability to attract an audience would be the limiting factor on their incomes. They could still become millionaires, but they would have to play large sold out venues a lot.

I am a computer technician, I can probably make between 20k-100k depending where I work, but there is no chance I will be a milionaire doing this. I do it becuase I can live on it, and I enjoy what I do. Computer techs shouldn't be making millions and neither should a few lucky musicians who happen to know the right people.

None of them (besides maybe pre-emptive war) have a place in gov't at all. THe only reason they are part of the party is because dumb ass hippies in the 1960s onward made uber-religious christians the foundation for the republican party.

I don't get it. I am for gay marriage, against pre-emptive war, and pro-choice(!) but I'm a libertarian that usually votes republican. Why?

I want less government! It is inefficient! The problem with republicans is a problem of all government. They always want more power. Because republicans can't spen money on crap like the war on poverty (welfare) due to their political ideology (which I happen to agree with); they waste tax dollars on military and border control to appease their power base (thanks to those god-damn dirty hippies!). If they don't spend money on their political interests they will lose out.

Afterall, who put Bush in office in 2004?
    The churches.

    Why did they do it?
Bush is pro-life and he is fighting the infedels to avenge 9/11. Kerry might have taken a weaker stance.

Most Americans aren't ready to abandon their faith for reason.

The common perception of a democrat in the United States is not conducive to fundamentalist religious beliefs. This is the fault of the image created by f*cking hippies who I hate because they always have to be be so god-damn politcal when they should just shut the f*ck up.
