Both Sony and Disney said that they would not allow their movies to be pressed by a company who also presses pornographic movies, and because of the high cost in pressing Blu-Ray movies and Sony and Disney being two of the high profile movie houses this means that none of the Blu-Ray manufacturers are willing to put the Porn on Blu-Ray. However last i heard the porn industry supposedly found "someone" to do it.

How is it harmful that someone learns that certain words are offensive and is consequently offended by them? Wouldn't it be more harmful if you didn't fully understand the meaning of the words commonly used in your primary language?

Are you honestly saying that following a learned behavior is bad? When you say that you are "a victim" of your learning it sounds like you are. The alternatives to learned behavior is either knowing everything you know from the start of your existence, or acting on pure instincts. Either way if you are saying you are not a "victim" of learned behaviors then you would be a very interesting case study.

  4. Re:They are just words. on Cleaning up Thunder Bluff · · Score: 1

What you say is true but you twist it in a profoundly stupid way.

To say that being offended by foul language is a learned behavior is obviously the case, but you present it as though only childish people would let a learned behavior influence them. The statement "Those words upset me cause mommy and daddy told me they should." is obviously meant to belittle people who have learned that offensive language is offensive.

My question is what in life isn't learned? Did you pop out of your mom and look at the sky and say "hey that's what the color blue looks like"? Chances are you look at blue objects and know they are blue because your "mommy and daddy" told you they are. WOW what a loser to grow up and be confined by some learned behavior!

The reason people are offended by offensive language (i know it sounds simple when stated like that but i'll continue to explain in case it's still not clear) is because when people are learning the language they speak, they learn that when people say certain things they are trying to be... wait for it... offensive. What purpose does the word fuck have in the English language other than to be offensive? It can add meaning to a phrase but because of the way it has been defined in our language (as an obscenity) it adds that meaning in an offensive manner. Is it so unreasonable that someone gets offended by an offensive word?

I can understand not wanting it to be offensive, but since the word first appeared around the 1500s and has been considered obscene since then i doubt you'll have much luck getting it changed.

Also for all those who get upset that crap isn't obscene while shit is. Is it really so amazing that the language has a non obscene way of saying the same thing? Saying "I had sex with my wife" is not nearly as vulgar as saying "I fucked my wife" yet people take issue that "ah crap" is seen as not vulgar while "holy shit" is. Sorry but it's the way language works. There are different ways of conveying information and emotions and the fact that there are two different words that covey the same meaning but different emotions is a good thing, get over it (though they are much better ways of expressing yourself than using words like crap all the time).

Also it's not like it's some programmer matching the prints to a criminal database. We simply collect the prints and send them to the FBI where they match them to any records they have and send the rap sheet back. So the people actually matching the prints are FBI agents who have also undergone background checks as part of their job. So yeah it's not some kid in his moms basement making up criminal records and attaching them to job applicants willy-nilly.

I bet you would be surprised. You have to understand that there are countless people using computers with OSX or Linux on them. Just because the majority of the install base right now may be corporations it doesn't mean that the small percentage of people using linux/osx at home don't want to play games. I use linux on all my personal home computers and i love playing games on them, i don't want to reboot just to load up a game, and more than that i want all that linux has WHILE i'm playing the game. I would love it if the game i want to play had a native port but if not i will settle for wine/cedega. Just because it's not "their general use" doesn't mean that it's not useful for someone or that it can't become the "general use" of the OS. And when you say "Most people tend to use Windows or consoles for gaming" what other choice do they have? If compnaies like transgaming didn't try to make games cross platform, and companied like ID didn't port to other platforms then there would literally be no choice but to play commercial games on windows. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. If you only make games for windows then people will only play those games on windows.

If we are comparing prices other than just hardware i thought it was interesting that to upgrade the dell to 3 years of warranty it costs $240, while to upgrade the Macbook to the same 3 year warranty it would up your price by $349.

So this state passes a law that says ISPs have to filter content for people that want it filtered. Person A living in Utah says they like porn so they don't call their ISP and everything continues like normal. Person B thinks this is a great idea because they don't like porn and don't want their 10 year old "accidentally" getting to a porn site so they call their ISP and have it filtered (which by the way, this isn't really stomping the rights of the child since A) they are a minority and have very few rights as it is and B) the parent pays for the service and is there for the one who is able to control it).

Now this doesn't screem to me that the constitution is being abused. It just tells me that people are silly. The reason i say they are silly is because there are a bunch of ISPs that already filter out porn and those kinds of sites as a service to their (largely christian) customers, so why do we need a bill for this? Just tell everyone that wants the content filtered to switch from their current ISP to one of the christian ISPs.

The problem with comparing computer repair to plumming is that there are far more people these days who have a basic working knowledge of computers than there are who have the same knowledge of plumming. This large supply of computer knowledge drives down the price of applying that knowledge.

Also if you had to pay to replace all the plumming in your house, or if you had to pay to replace your car, then you would be talking about tens of thousands of dollars, so you are willing to pay $60/hour to maintain them in order to prevent a major problem later. If you look at a computer the same way, and let's say that an average computer will cost two thousand dollars to completely replace (which is high as we all know), then for similar price to maintain ratio you would expect to pay no more than $6/hour.
