cyber bullying also happens in online communities, where people will join communities, and use various forms on pressure to get the weak minded to do whatever they want, or people who pointlessly troll and spam others, to a psychotic degree (emails, website attacks, hacking, character deflamation.. etc) luckily they cant hurt you physically. and you can change names online and go elsewhere, in reality, you cant, well you can, but it's not as easy, and that's only after bullying gets to the point of stalking and death threats.. when it becomes a pure obsession on the bully's part. that's when you set up a sting on the bastard.
I was once harassed online and offline by someone, he didnt directly atack me, but he had his friends pass messages to me, and online, he'd go to chatrooms and spam... well, I eventually found the bastard, was some little nerdy (as in, a loser without a life, and not that intelligent, but wants to be) final fantasy fanboy, he tried to run, tripped, then I beat his ass up.
my problems went away quickly. I have a high temper threshold, but if someone manages to break it, say a bully, I cant garauntee their safety, since when I do his my threshold, I just snap.
other than that, yeah, I could go on about all the things they missed in that report, since cyber bullying goes farther than that, hell, bullying in general goes farther than that, a lot of true cyber bullies (Ones that plague communities) were probably brought up in a shitty situation, then got the shit beaten out of them at school, so they take it online.. they're usually the losers, most peopel online arent bothered by them, some are, especially when they get obsessive.. I've seen it, and have seen it firsthand. hell, one asshole actually wants me dead, and his followers have vowed to kill me in his name, you know.. shit like that.. that's how sad the internet gets, folks. doubt any of them can leave their chairs anyways.
if you really want to get people to buy these gateways with suse installed, appeal to most teenagers, who are obsessed with almost everything japanese, just say "Japan uses linux"
if the government was technologically competent, generally competent, and honest.
seeing as that's never the case, it's not that great of an idea, now, if they simply installed the wires, that would be fine. then allow the local isp's to use these wires, or allow new isp's to sprout, thus making a more option oriented market, instead of a monopolistic environment, then that would be great, but knowing people, even those small isp's would buy each other out, then a new monopoly would start, then one of the shitty telcos or cable companies would move in and monopolize in a heartbeat. thus stuck back to square one.
so, looking at all possible consequences... it's a bad idea. good intentions, good idea in theory, but bad idea in reality.
a competitive move towards the OTHER major x86 unix-like system, linux. why would sun do this? 2 reasons.. 1. Make it look like they arent with linux to avoid any crap with sco 2. After helping linux, they realize this thing could turn into a giant that could eat them in one bite
thse could be the reasons.. that or they really mean to compete with IBM and intel and microsoft, who has often rubbed them the wrong way (mainly the ugly java incident) I bet their main goal is microsoft, and since intel is often in bed with microsoft, intel's probably their second target, that and amd doesnt share ties with microsoft (none that I've heard of) so the amd platform would be a much safer choice, that and they are technologically better at times. What I really wouldnt mine seeing pushed is PPC cpu, that's a good little processor, and let's face it, x86 is old technology that keeps getting stuff added on. PPC's are perfect for multimedia and most things that people do, sell them in a mass production, they become as low priced as the x86... intel and microsoft are the only reasons we're still using x86's.. would be cool if AMD started on a PPC clone (if legally possible) as a secondary market for processors.. if we could start seeing that, then that would be sweet, and that could help sun too if they want to enterprise on their product.
if the programmer didnt think of a move kasporov would think of, the computer will be like *bzzzt* error. and loop until it makes an illogical move out of confusion, much like a person does when in doubt.
well, I'm referring to a windows power user, not a linux power user.. a linux power user knows the os.. a windows power user does all the stuff I listed above.
bah, sounds like the people who wrote that up were those typical psycho righteous people who are paranoid and think children dont deserve a say in anything, rights, or privacy, they're the type that think they own their children to a slave-like extent.
or are fanatically religious.. my cousin who lives with her mom in virginia has no rights whatsoever, her door got removed from the hinges, she isnt allowed to watch tv, go online, or even play outside. just go to school, play on her soccer team, do homework, eat and then sit in her room quietly until her set bed time.
she's 17 btw.
we also knew a family that did all that, and didnt even let their kids play sports. the oldest son ended up getting into hardcore drugs and robbed a house, the oldest daughetr got into heavy partying and dresses like a goth (she's 20 or so now), the second oldest is starting to get rebellious (well last time we talked to her) and the youngest smokes..
overbearing restrictions on teenagers is bad, because eventually, they do rebel, in very bad ways, that usually get them killed, or jailed. overbearing restrictions is just an axcuse for a parent to not have to parent their children, or deal with typical children problems.
however, 10-12 year olds need to be watched online. I had a parent breathe down my neck when their son got on my irc network and was shown goatse. I was threatened with a lawsuit, then I pointed to the fact that my network wasnt for children. and explained that the internet isnt a fun fantasy land. it's very much like the real world. (in a sense) You're still dealing with people, real human beings on the other side of the wire. So, a lot of rules of human nature and society apply. would you let your child walk around south central LA at 1 am in the morning with a kkk outfit on? no. that's like going into yahoo chatrooms that are designated for 14 year olds only, or 10 year olds only.. because those chatrooms are really started by pedophiles. and yeah. (part of that was the explanation to her, and the rest was something I stated here)
My suggestion to parents is to not let your children chat on yahoo or aol. and hell, if your child is under 14, or lacks a brain whatsoever, not to chat at all.
When I started on the net, I knew not to go to some of these places.. and I can spot a pedophile from a mile away, sadly, the common teenager cant. so it's up to the parents to watch what their children do occasionally.. like if your child meets someone "cool" online.. you start worrying.. if that person presents enough evidence that they're really who they are then ok.
there is such a thing as overparenting as there is underparenting.
for now, I dont see linux converting the common power user, who wants photoshop, macromedia flash, flashy lights, easy game creation utilities, games and more games, and various other frills. microsoft will have those people for a while longer. another BIG need is the push for scanner compatibility, SANE doesnt cut it, at all. sane is more of a hassle than it's worth. someone needs to come up with a better, more kernel integrated scanner system, so all you need to do is install a kernel module when you want to add a new scanner driver and voila! it works.
with sane.. you sometimes need a kernel module, and the sane module... which can be troublesome.. and not to mention the whole interface is buggy at times, very few people I know actually have working scanners on linux, this needs to be changed.
why do you think sco is doing what it's doing? sco has been funded by microsoft ever since this all begun.. microsoft isnt going to jump out with a knife and start slashing and condemn itself, no, it's like a godfather in the mafia.. it's going to sit back and send its men (aka, usually smaller businesses with billy's hand up their asses) and have them do the killing.
1. http://xserver.freedesktop.org/ 2. ?? 3. (profit! just kidding) simple, dont use metacity 4. Use a mozilla deriviative. the mozilla guys like their bloat. 5. OpenOffice is fine IMHO, needs some more work though. 6. simple to do. (now for my own suggestions) 7. create a system that will recognize certain formats. (using binfmt_misc) 8. create an "executeable" type for installation. that, no matter which destop you're using, will run (hence once more, using binfmt_misc) and install what you requested
in order to make a good desktop system, you gotta get the command line as an option, and lighten down the graphics system so it doesnt take 5 years to run. also, dont pack in millions of useless apps (eg, sendmail, apache, etc) on a desktop system. or strictly command-line only tools that have no frontends available, have those as optional.
that doesnt cover planetary collisions, what would happen if the moon were to suddenly start going towards the earth, or mars drifting towards us?;)
or those really huge ass asteroids that are big enough to almost be their own planets (like ceres)
really, they cant put a real estimate on when something's going to destroy the earth. not to mention the real threat isnt space, the real threat is ourselves, every day someone's on the verge of launching a war on someone else. humans are the planet's worst fear.
that sco might have stolen code from linux? or might add it to their code before the trial to make a statement, all they would have to do is change the file dates so it would look real, and take our developers' copyrights, and then point fingers, I have a feeling they'll do that when they get to court. might be illegal, but the courts ave no idea who came first, or what code came first, all someone has to do is present a convincing piece of evidence, even if it's doctored. and they can win in an instant. maybe that's why they're dragging their feet, maybe they're gonna make it look like the "evil opensource community is attacking them for their closed code" and once they display it... they could easily win.
scary thought, but dont think they havent thought of that. it's a very real possibility.

maybe that's why they really say it's the death of free software... because I seriously think microsoft is backing sco to attack linux and opensource... notice only big opensource names are getting attacked... sgi and sun helped linux, but they dont make major contributions to opensource... thus not a major threat to microsoft, and the way microsoft is screaming how bad and evil and screwed up opensource is.. and the thing with the bitkeeper exploit, it's slowly starting to add up.. microsoft is playing dirty to keep their market. microsoft is behind this, it's becoming too obvious.
wow, not mtv has gone into space missions, what next? creating a real matrix to enslave millions of teens into a world with the jackass folk and teeny bopper singers?
have one main distro for the desktop market, and mainly a face for linux, and let others work on alternatives, because then if the "main" distro becomes corrupted or developer warfare occurs, you'll have a fall back..
what they're saying is stop any other disributions that you're working on and make just 1 distro.
yeah, then we all go work a picture of bill gates after we do that as well, huh? linux is about choice, say, a company doesnt like the mainstream linux distrobution, they can look into the alternatives and see how well they work, or even have the ability to create their own linux distro to use for their company. linux grants that freedom as well.
I dont think microsoft is going to cut their throats to make a corporate statement, they're already standing on unstable grounds, last thing they want to do is take a good product that has a good user base (aka, money) and strip functionality out of it just so "the innocent windows users dont get poisoned by the evils of linux"
1. keep the current source of money for this product by not altering it. 2. dont officially say you support it to keep the newbies to this product from using the "unsupported" software. 3. ??? 4. profit!
they'd support voip, why? because, at least then, you know exactly where the spammers are coming from on voip and you can block them from the service. unlike emails, these people can be stopped here, and since voip is run by private companies, they have right to refuse service for internet telemarketing, since they're unregulated. however, if regulated, they might not have that option, if say, the govt decided to allow telemarketing on VOIP or rid of the DNC list.
this is a technology that shouldnt be touched now, the companies who over the pc to phone connections should be charged the fee for using the telephone lines, since that's all they're doing... they're using their resources to let you call numbers through them, so only the company should be charged for telecom rates.
and if the telecoms want to preserve their industry, you know what? collaborate, get involved with voip, embrace it, use it to your gain.
that's why these companies get threatened by change, they're either not ready for it, or they're too pussy to change to it. microsoft needs to get off their high horse and start embracing the use of linux, whilst honoring the gpl (well, bad example there) telecoms need to embrace voip.. electric and oil companies need to embrace and help advacne the fuel cell, because they could make a killing off of manufacturing, distributing, or using them. 1 fuel cell can power a house.
so, really, the problem is a deep seeded human fear.. change. people fear change. but they have the power to embrace it and use it as well, something most companies wish not to do.
let's pray that someone will wake up one of these days and embrace it.
