The reply was: "No, he was stoned to death."

Yes, this was a true story ;p

Forget needing special glasses to view things, why not have the chip piggy-back onto your optical nerve? Digital overlaying, all the stats you can stick on your HUD, like the first couple of pages in Ghost in the Shell 2: Man Machine Interface... sometimes it's useful being able to look at an object and automatically have a label pointing to it, identifying exactly what it is, what speed it's travelling at, and a line with it's projected path, the possibility to have people remote control bodies that can work in dangerous situations, etc etc.

Although, I'm not too sure about cracking open one's head to insert one of these things... maybe in another 20 years?

In the article, he states that anyone can contribute backdoors/trojans into the code because nobody is looking at the code. This is completely and utterly wrong. I'm pretty sure that to insert code into the kernel, you have to sign up to the mailing-list, and send in a diff. There, other kernel hackers can easily see the code, and if Linus accepts it, it goes into the tree. Even though anyone around the world can do this, the process is fairly strict.

Anyone want to place bets that Microsoft paid him to say that?

VB program for messaging around the school network? I was -selling- this program! Had some registration key thingy for it, sold the keys for 50c each, and they are locked per user, so they can't share keys.

It was all good until I was experimenting with net send one day, and accidently sent it to the domain. Simultaneously, every computer on the school network went "ping!". I logged off and slowly walked out of the computer room...

Needless to say, it got banned. And I wasn't punished or anything.... woohoo!

  11. Or Private Nurse? on Game Design Showdown Leads To Collateral Romance · · Score: 2, Interesting

Y'know, the second I glanced at the title, my perverted mind immediately thought "INCEST!". But that's just me.

On a more serious note, I hear that the PC version of Private Nurse has been ported to PS2. Although the PC version is an adult game (read, not for children ;p), I hear the PS2 port is a PG-rated version of the PC game. Since I have somewhat played the English translation of the game before, I can say a little bit on the basic plot.

Basically, you're this guy, whose name I forgot, and you're fairly weak from some sickness. You have a childhood friend (female, of course), who's good at sports. Then, one day, your mum decides to hire a private nurse for you. In the PC game, ther e is no adult scenes until the last 10% of the story. It's really just a clickathon. But the music in the game is really excellent, and you can listen to them outside of the game as a normal audio CD. The voice acting was excellent as well, and as with most adult-adventure games, there's usually a couple of different endings to get. This game would be perfectly fine even with the adult scenes removed, which is what I think is the PS2 version, named Private Nurse: Maria (the nurse's name)

First of all, you have to grab the latest version of metacity. Untar into a folder, and make sure you configure with composition support. If you specify it, and it still says 'no' at the end of the configuration, you will need to copy some header files to the proper directories from /opt/fdo, but I can't remember which. Then, build, install, run FD.O's Xserver, and login to Gnome. If it all worked out, when you click on the titlebar of a window, it should become translucent.

By the way, I've tried CVS metacity with FD.O's Xserver..... funky stuff. Translucency when you move windows! Although it chews a fair bit of CPU (when moving the window itself, that is, as just holding the window still doesn't chew CPU), it should be fixed when we finally get HW acceleration. I was able to get MPlayer to play a video in the background, hover a window over it and watch it through it. ub3r cool stuff.
