  1. Re:Paper Electronics (for many things anyhow) on Umberto Eco on Paper vs. Electronic Memory · · Score: 1

Wouldn't electronic storage have an advantage in this sense? Well, short of DRM, the ability to make exact copies and easily distribute them makes archiving a lot easier, and destroying something for religios/political reasons a lot harder.

  2. Re:Paper Electronics (for many things anyhow) on Umberto Eco on Paper vs. Electronic Memory · · Score: 4, Insightful

To play devil's advocate - what about all the data that is lost forever because there is simply not enough paper to record it on (electronic storage has a much higher content/size ratio)?

As for incompatible older formats - is that like old languages which are hard to decipher? As mankind progresses extracting data from old electronic formats will be similar to extracting it from squiggles on stone pillars.

Well, partially, I think it's more along the lines that 1000MB = 1GB = 1GiB = 1024MB since marketing is hardly going to use GiB...

I know the sector encoding, etc took up a lot of space on a 2MB floppy, but somehow I don't think it's taking up around 10GB on a 160GB drive.

In how this is relevant to anything to do with mobile internet access - just a chance for me to tag on a complaint about the lack of 3G broadband speed unlimited wireless data service here in the UK.

I agree, surely they could add another input to their model along the lines of "promotional budget" if they suggest that this is what's causing the outliers?

On the correlation argument, if they use factors known prior to the song being a hit to predict that it will be, it's not correlation they are looking at but some sort of R^2 - which measures predictability (this is not about causality - they want to PREDICT, not find out _why_). Think of it this way, you can predict in advance that the sun will go down by measuring the decreasing pattern of the amount of light, but this does not mean that it getting progressively darker causes the sun to go down in a few hours.

Wouldn't a better idea be to seek volunteers in Congo - in high risk areas? Possibly near the area of the outbreak (/as soon as the next one starts so as to also try and prevent the spread of infection). Otherwise are they planning to infect the volunteers with Ebola... and don't expect anything to go wrong?

On the unethical side - if anything goes wrong it's not like the settlement in Congo will be remotely what it's in the west. People are probably less "freaked out"/don't understand the dangers, so volunteers would be easier to find. -- not that I support these reasons,
