He conflated Afghanistan with Iraq. US military intervention in Afghanistan was 100% justified and I don't think any right-minded person would disagree. Bin Laden and Al Qaeda were headquartered there and the Taliban government refused to cooperate with the US in bringing Osama to justice. The US, went into Afghanistan, knocked over a brutally oppressive regime. Practically everything after that's been bungled, but the reasons for going into Afghanistan were legitimate and perfectly in line with the "war on terror."

Iraq is a whole other kettle of fish...

I can see your point about football, mostly on the QB's part, IMHO. You need to figure out your own strategy and anticipate the other team's and there's the opportunity to revise on every play. It's a continuously-changing strategy in a way. However, this is more on the QB's part. For the rest of the players, I'd think it's more about taking your part of the chosen strategy and improvising on it. For them, it's somewhat the same as futbol (however the spelling, fuessball, etc.) in terms of intellectualism.

Enh, not really. Sure, the QB needs to be able to read and react quickly based on what the defense is throwing at him, but so do the rest of the players on the offense, especially the O-Line. The guys on the line have to recognize the scheme the defense is using and adapt their approach to match. Last season SI ran a piece on college O-linemen and pointed out how many had GPA's greater than 3.

The thing with football is that it's a series of distinct plays. That gives both teams time to strategize more than most other sports. Plus football places tremendous importance on breaking down game film and studying your opponent. A star football player is going to spend as much time in the "classroom" as he will in the weightroom.

I say this is a sweet time to pick up a dual 2 Ghz G5. Given the speed increases the rumor sites have been talking about (like 200-400 Mhz more) the new systems are not going to be that much faster than the current ones so the lower price is a win for someone looking for a near-bleeding edge system. I say if you've got the scratch and want a G5 go for it.

The defense would likely be able to stay healthy if they werent' playing 3/4s of every game. For the last few years the Lion's D has been essentially playing twice as much as the average nfl team. Of course they're going to start falling apart.

Essentially true except that the two most greivous injuries to the lions this season (Cash and Stewart) occured in the preseason.

What they need, is more talented targets for harrington, and a credible running threat -- alot of which is in play calling

Kellen Winslow Jr. a reliable tight end would make Harrington that much better. The running game's a bit tougher because of Stewart's over-large contract, and the lack of top-flight backs in the draft this year. However, upgrading the middle of the line would help the running game as much as a new back. Pinner showed some spark in his limited playing time, he might be a stop gap answer. Ideally I'd like to see the lions draft Chris Perry in the second round, but that probably won't happen. If that is the case drafting a solid offensive guard to replace Ray Brown would be nice.

that said, the Lions will only see the superbowl in 2006 because it'll likely be in our backyard.

Uhm what's likely about it, the 2006 Super Bowl(XL) was already awarded to Ford Field.

Assuming Millen and Mooch can inject some life into the moribund Lion's offense (ie draft Winslow in round one), and the defense can stay healthy the Lions will be a far improved team next season, and in the current NFL a run for the title in 2006 is not that far-fetched, though improbable.

In the view of many experts, The Lord of the Rings was shaping up to be the biggest disaster in cinema history. Now it has gone down as one of its greatest triumphs. Evidence suggests that February 29 will be the date of Hollywood's official mea culpa. Assuming that Return of the King wins best picture (and you'd be a fool to bet against it), it will in effect be an award for all three films. The same goes for Jackson's probable nod as best director.

Well yeah, I've always felt that the people who vote for the Oscars were uncomfortable with the thought of a "three-peat" by the LotR films and hat this was precisely what they were going to do -- award the third film and consider that honoring the trilogy as a whole. After all it's really just one big movie that's been cut into three pieces.

At the bare minimum they need to give Peter Jackson some kind of special award for being able to pull of the production of the movies.
