  1. SBC on Broadband Majority in US · · Score: 3, Informative

SBC is now offering 1.5Mbps/128kbps for $26.95 a month. Thats two dollars more a month than AOL dialup and $5 more a month than SBC's dialup. It also comes with a free modem and home installation kit with a one year contract. That was enough to get me to switch over my parents (finally), and the last time I went home half the people in the neighborhood who didn't have DSL and some who had cable have moved over to SBC's offering. Apparently they also offer a 3.0Mbps/384kbps for $36.99 too...if I had a landline I'd probably drop my cable for that.

Anyone know if T-Mobile plans to bump speed up?

It doesn't look like T-Mobile will have any speed upgrade for at least a year. If you want speed you're better off going to Sprint's Vision service or Verizon's Express network (which are both CDMA2000 1xRTT...the same speeds), or for even more speed AT&T Wireless' EDGE. I think their unlimited data plans are all around $80.

But now that the price of the Sidekick data plan with voice has dropped to $20 this new Sidekick certainly looks appealing. I like the design and the camera isn't too bad (for a phone) either.

However lately I had been working on a website and in the cross browser testing I've been using Firefox 0.8 and on for Mozilla compatibility. Its taken extensive use of Firefox but I've almost completely switched. I love the tabbed browsing and it renders so much faster on my computer. I've also found it seems to handle some websites better than IE, especially with unknown extensions. I just wish it had Windows integration, but maybe someone will figure that out. Microsoft has a lot to worry about for IE 7. Firefox is improving with every version and I have fewer and fewer reasons to use IE.

Somewhat ironic, I think, and an interesting reversal. Currently where I live Nextel has a slight advantage in coverage because their network is 800MHz and can go farther from a single tower, while AT&T is still converting TDMA 850 towers to GSM. I'll be interested to see if this changes when Nextel moves to 1900MHz on towers spaced for 800, etc.

I believe AT&T converted a lot of their TDMA 850 to GSM 1900 and had tons of coverage problems cause of this. Also T-Mobile is using 1900MHz GSM with no plans to go 850, so its not all going to 850...
