I'd really hope that if you disable whatever 3D effects (ie: window zooming, genie effect, icon zooming, window flag-waving behavior) they happen to have on by default you'd end up back in a reasonable 2D interface, low cpu overhead interface. If this guy's school is using Bluesocket VPN I don't think they're worried about using open standards, they've already dished out the money for this VPN solution and I'm willing to bet they'll stick with it. Sometimes it would take more than 10 minutes to get an initial ping back because they other side hadn't started their fire yet. Even if they had, it took over a minute just to get an intro line of chat finished. Rain storm? Night time? Don't even bother, your network was down for the count.

So, in essence, yes. And if you crash your car after the dealer recommends you upgrade your tires then provieds those tires for you, yes, they should accept responsibility.

One thing I really dislike about linksys's firmwares is that they don't have any sort of recovery program. I've gone through 2 WAP11's because a firmware upgrade on their site somehow failed to do it's job. This would've been a minor software problem if they had a critical recovery problem, but instead I had to get a replacement. Another thing, replacing a linksys router requires (last few times I talked to tech support) that you have the receipt for the device, which is complete BS. If you own the device and it's broken they should replace it, regardless of where you bought it and for how much. This was infuriating since the lab that I work in has way too much hardware, and we're far too disorganized to save boxes and receipts for all of the products we purchase. Some comments in the aforementioned article make me think this is still a problem in the 54g device, though I don't have personal experience with that.

That was the only crash I've ever had in Mac OS X though, and I had reloaded and (automatically) had all my settings back to the way they were before the crash, and had the system all patched up, even with the patch that crashed the system, within 35 minutes. This was amazing to me, considering all the hundreds of times I've spent reloading my own or other people's windows boxen and the frustration of importing all the previous settings (and never quite getting them ALL back). I'm not going to say OS X is the OS that does it all, but I will say that after using MS OSes since DOS 3.2 my new desktop OS of choice is OS X for reasons like that... Even so, I still do wait a day or so to patch because clearly things can, and do, go wrong some times.

yes, the machine would slow down. however, if the purpose of using multiple drives was to speed things up then this would be counter-productive as far as the original goal was concerned.

as far as multi-disc games go, from my experience the game usually looks in the same location for each disk, ie: /dev/disk2s1 would be one cd and /dev/disk3s1 would be the other, and i've personally never had success with this, for either emulating or using real cdrom devices.

    http://www.xiph.org/paranoia/

really though, this 3-drive thing may very well depend on your hardware configuration, especially if you're using ATA drives, which i assume you are. ripping from two cdrom drives on the same bus will most likely not work well since only one device per channel can talk at the same time. so, if you have one drive set up as secondary master and one set up as secondary slave (i can say that since i don't live in LA) it might not work well due to the nature of how cd ripping works. it may require more real-time access than is available to be shared between the two devices simultaneously.

not that i need to give everybody permission, but please correct anything here if it's wrong. i don't claim to know everything about modern cd ripping tricks, just speaking from experience.

CD ripping is just one of those things where if you don't have enough resources on hand, and you don't have the sluggish jitter-correction option enabled (which would possibly defeat the purpose of ripping with more than one drive), you could end up with some errors in the form of audible pops.

So, I turned to my 12" powerbook, plugged in an external 1394 drive, not firewire 800, and almost instantly got a kernel panic. I'm not sure at what point the installer was at, it was behind my mail.app that i was taking notes in. I rebooted and the poor thing just wouldn't boot up. It'd bring up some of the network services, like ftp, but it didn't bring up ssh. It never got to a gui either. Repairing the disk and permissions didn't help. This is only the second kernel panic I've gotten since i bought this kick ass, best laptop I've ever had last Feb, but damn, the last one just required a reboot and disk check! At least OS X automatically imports your system prefs when you reload a new system on the old HDD, unlike trying to import your prefs in windows after reloading right over the top. XP on my inspiron took a whole day to reload and get back to custom settings. Oh, there's the chime of my installer rebooting, looks like everything's back up and running now. Hmm..... took about 15 minutes, sweeeet. =D But man wtf was up with that? Time to try it again...
