    That wouldn't be terribly cost-effective.

Cheap computer capable of rendering 2D bitmaps at 60fps: about $300.
    Gigabit connection: $200/month
    Cost after 1 year: (300 + 200*12) = $2700
    Cost after 3 years: (300 + 200*36) = $7500

Mid-range computer capable of rendering 3D at 60fps: about $1200
    1MBit ADSL connection: $30/month
    Cost after 1 year: (1200 + 30*12) = $1560
    Cost after 3 years: (1200 + 30*36) = $2280

Personally, I would rather eat the initial cost of the mid-range computer and save money over time. That money saved could be spent on upgrading the mid-range computer to a higher-end computer.

This is what is wrong with the whole gaming/computing industry as a whole. Specifications are always put out before anything else, thus further perpetuating the "Megahertz Myth".

We've all seen the XBox2/360 specs. Sure, dual Power 970 processors is nice, but dual processors mean nothing if nothing decent is being done with them. I would rather see gameplay videos, screenshots, etc showing the console in action before I see specs. Much the same as I would rather test-drive a car before I look under the hood.

To make matters more interesting, I know the locations of all the weapons and ammunition in the building. Pellet guns, .22 Lee-Enfields, 5.56mm C7 Assault Rifles, and 5.56mm C9 Light Machine Guns. Of course, all these weapons have at least 5 locks between their storage room and the rest of the facility at all times.

Porn also fuels spending and upgrades in the industry. Think about it:

People want porn faster - ISP's upgrade equipment to provide faster connections.

As the amount of people with faster connections rises, so does the quality and hence the file size of the porn.

As the file sizes get larger and larger, the time it takes to acquire them gets longer, and people want them faster. So, the cycle repeats again.

    Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

The difficulty with a thunder system is the problems and threats it poses to other things in this world. That thunder would be generating an enormous amount of EM Interference, thus making radio transmissions very difficult.

Plus, for widespread use, there would have to be control measures in place in order to avoid innocent people getting 10000VAC arcs onto their left asscheek. On the upside though, cities could entirely phase out street lights with a thunder system.
