  7. A platform everyone has on How To Get Into Programming? · · Score: 1

One way to start programming is by using something you are familiar with - your web browser. Most all browsers have a Javascript implementation (be aware of MS's JScript and VBScript with proprietary functions though) which you can use to begin learning the basics of input and data manipulation. Might I recommend Firefox for its nifty little JS console.

Sure, buttons and text boxes for input aren't the total representation of data input/manipulation, but like I said, its the basics. You only need to know what a variable is, and most functions offer decent interoperability with numbers and strings.

As well, you learn the C-Type syntax and get to do some cool stuff without having to download compilers and IDE's - a text editor and a JS-enabled browser is all you need. Once you do feel quite comfortable with the concepts, you can use your knowledge of the C-Type syntax to ease the transition into other C-Type languages - C/C++/C#, Java, and a whole lot more.

I have quite an opposite experience.

I bought the cheapest model of Palm there was availible in my city, being the Zire 21 for $150CDN. Since it was a display model and the flip-cover was heavily damaged (though the PDA was in mint condition), they took $10 off.

The instructions it came with were ridiculously simple, along with the software it came with. By the end of the first week of using it, I had menu commands and Graffiti down to a precision. I even installed a few games, a word processor, and a Mathematics suite (Graphing calc, spreadsheet, et al) for long boring car rides or for school assignments.

The only real problem I've had with it was with 3rd party software. One application would randomly cause my Palm to freeze, resulting in me having to use a paperclip to poke the reset hole (no connotation intended). Since the application wasn't critical (installed it for kicks anyway), I deleted it in one shot.

I've had my Zire 21 for a month, and can't see myself without it.

This is how rootkits are at least detected:

A rootkit has the ability to change the inputs and outputs of the overlaying OS API's. It does not however have the ability to change the I/O's of direct hardware access. Simple solution to detect rootkits is to do an API call for file directory (dir, ls, whatever), and compare it side-by-side to a direct hardware request for a file directory.

Now if IE fuckes up a computer, and someone gets pissed off enough, they can sue Microsoft, saying the user PAID money for a product and trusted that product.

Actually, you didn't pay for IE. You payed for Windows, and IE came free with it. It was a cunning move Microsoft made back in the day.

In fact, It was a good move on Microsoft's part to make IE free. Since IE is based on NCSA Mosiac technology, MS agreed to pay a small quarterly license fee plus a share of the profits from IE to NCSA. Since IE has been free for the past decade, all NCSA has gotten has been the small quarterly license fees.

NCSA thought they had a good deal, but ended up getting the short end of the stick.
