how about this: part of the appeal of a 21st century MacGuyver to a younger audience could be his ability to apply his wit to situations by coming up with low-tech solutions to high-tech problems. The problem with choosing leaders in American society today is that it usually boils down to who can sell their lies more craftily than the opposition, and can create a PERCEPTION of superiority over their opponent. Why not choose our leaders based upon something they cannot escape: the truth. This could be measured by a compromise between primitive and modern methods. At some point in history, humans chose their leaders based upon true physical competition. Whoever won the contest through their own strength or cunning, won the mantle of leader. We should ditch elections altogether once and choose the president through a competitive tournament style system, where they would all be subjected to questions on history, philosophy, and science, as well as competitions involving problem solving skills. Surely, a transparent, competitive, quasi-gladiatorial style ritual of choosing would surely produce a more fit leader than our current method of choosing someone based upon who can spin the best media performance, financially and otherwise.

not only in the studio, but as a marketer as well. His Musicology tour in 2004 was the highest grossing act that year in the US. He gave away the associated album to every ticket holder who came in the door. He is smart enough to know that as a musician, your money is made on the road, not off of album sales. To a touring artist, the record is there primarily as a promotional tool to get tickets sold. Him giving away his newest record is just another way to get fans in the seats. Good for his fans, good for his revenue, while allowing him to still maintain full integrity (not letting your label railroad your fans - look up Trent Reznor's recent debacle with his new album in Austrailia). What more could a recording artist ask for?

As for the downside of paying an army of technicians to maintain it; I don't think that argument holds much water due to the fact that where I live, a Linux tech is a high dollar commodity.
I'm at the end of my rope Windows wise, but until Linux can compete with it's ease of use, it won't grow the way it needs to.

Rampant consumerism is the final frontier now....We are in danger of being slaves to our own success.
We need a breakthrough that will capture the imagination of the public at large. (Evidence of life on other planets would be great) Either that, or a new great war effort to spur on innovation and discovery. I would prefer the former.

Even since Rupert Murdoch bought them out, these service issues seem to have only worsened. It's interesting to note that with all of this new money at their disposal, they still haven't been able to cope with the demands of their user base. Let's put it this way; I can explain to and show my 48 year old uncle why he might want to start watching DVD's instead of VHS; i'll have a much harder time telling him why he wants to buy a Blu-Ray movie as opposed to a cheaper DVD of the same title.
