  1. Apple's strategy revealed: Houdini reborn on First Look at Apple's Intel Developer Macs · · Score: 1

OK, so the developer MacTels run OSX and the developers have found that they can install Windows XP with no real problems. All the buzz right now is about how can Apple can't stop people from putting OSX on Dell boxes. How this will kill Apple (yada, yada yada. I've even read an article on geek.com saying that Apple will get out of the hardware business entirely and focus on software. Apple is going to go head to head against Microsoft. (????) Apple's strategic shift is clearly about the hardware. Apple clearly makes the best hardware around and the public at large is finally getting this message. The sucess of the iPod coupled with the rollout of the Apple stores has pushed this perception. It's well known that that Apple makes the majority of its money on hardware sales and that it's laptops and desktops are the most profitable in the industry. I believe that Apple's long-term strategy is to sell more desktops and laptops by going after users who appreciate the fit and finish of Apple's hardware, (and will pay a premium for it) but still want to use Windows (for what ever reason, real or perceived). Here's the situation that Apple has created. An Apple desktop/laptop that runs OSX and Windows efficiently. Apple doesn't realy care which OS you use the most, as long as you buy their hardware. Apple's going against Dell, HP and all the other windows-only box makers.

  2. Re:A Terrible Movie on New Star Wars Movie From the Makers of 'Troops' · · Score: 1

While I wouldn't call it a terrible movie, I would say that I was dissappointed with it. While the CGI and overall look of the film was great, I found myself continually being distracted by the fact that the physical acting was so bad. I mean, here is this crack squad of stormtroopers strolling in reponse to report of "blaster fire" There was no intensity of movement or purpose, especially when they were "searching the area where the shots were fired". Here they are, worried about getting shot and they're just stumbling along. (was that intentional??) The script would say "spread out" but there they were, all bunched together to fill the frame. Call me a geek, but I've seen more realistic squad movements in video games i've played. 'TROOPS' remains one of my all-time favorite fan-films, 'IMPs', is just average.

  3. Re:PowerPC CPU? on The Xbox 360 Unveiled · · Score: 1

    check the colony video,

they show the MB with what appears to be a very large heat sink.

the back of the enclosure shows two 80mm fans.

one thing i can say is that xbox 360 won't be any quieter than the current xbox, which is too bad but understandable

  4. Challenger reference? on SpaceShipOne Flight Not as Perfect as it Seemed · · Score: 3, Insightful

    From the New Scientist Article:

But it was the sublime view that affected him the most. "The sky was jet black, with light blue along the horizon - it was really an awesome sight," he said. "You really do get the feeling that you've touched the face of God."

That just brought me back to 1986 when the Challenger exploded during ascent and Ronald Reagan's address to the nation that night...

Say what you will about Reagan, regardless of how you felt about his policies (many were quite controversial), he sure could deliver great speeches.

  5. Re:Non-PC games on Rockstar Announces GTA San Andreas · · Score: 1

Because it's easier (read cheaper). fixed hardware, fixed OS. They don't have to develop and test for every possible PC hardware/software combination. My prediction (and this is an easy one). I envision the PC gaming market continue to shrink in the future. The gap between perceived (screen appearance) power of PCs and consoles (for games) is getting smaller and smaller. Unless of course, someone develops some really killer application (3-D?, wrap around VR goggles)

  6. consider g on Wireless APs in Homebrew Coffee Shops? · · Score: 1

I would consider g because of the higher bandwidth support. That higher bandwidth should translate into supporting more simulatneous users in the coffee shop. Assuming of course that the ISP connection is relatively high.

Exactly, I mean, my handheld can run weeks on two double AA's. ;-) Until they can show us some real numbers, who cares? Even if we take their word for it, 8 hours run time, I doubt if the price point that these methonal fuel cells come out at would justify switching. I mean, you could just buy extra batteries to extend your run time.

  10. Re:Insanely great on Apple Releases iTunes for Windows · · Score: 1

I've also been playing with it off and on while at work and have to agree that it's strange seeing Aqua UI controls running on my PC. It brings back that whole discussion about porting the Mac OS to intel hardware again. WinTunes looks and works like the other iLife applications, and is full of those aesthetic touches that Apple is known for. A good example of this is the graphic equilizer. Select different settings and the sliders "slide" to their new positions (instead of jump as in most other programs). It's a small, some would say silly thing, but it looks so cool. Makes the software enjoyable to use. Looking forward to seeing how WinTunes works with my iPod. Apple used to (will they continue?) ship MusicMatch with their iPods and I can say that it is a pain to use.

  14. Re:better than everything on Will Classic Games Disappear Forever? · · Score: 1

Bosconian? I thought I was the only person who ever liked that game.... Ahh, the "Central Park" arcade in Mountain View. They gave out tokens for A's and B's on report cards. My nerdy friends and I used to go there and end up with our pockets full of free tokens. (probably contributed to them going out of business in just a few years) They even had a food counter with ice cream and hamburgers. (the first Dave & Busters?) Ahh, bosconian, tempest, errrr, what was the name of that side-scroller shooter? you flew a ship in a "cave" scrolling right to left and shot and dodged various enemies. You shot by pushing buttons that were aranged in a diamond pattern (shoot four directions) The music was the theme to the 1980's movie "Flash Gordon" Boy, that song got burned into my head.........
