And when the dead birds, bats, and butterflies ( etc. ) start piling up around the reception point, ( not to mention the random idiot in an aircraft that just happens to forget about "restricted airspace" ) what do we do then?
Oh, and lets not forget the satellites and other spacecraft that might fly through the beam while orbiting the earth.
Being in the industry that deals with this kind of thing, this is old news.
There's various was of dealing with this. Already mentioned here is the fact that the devices can be set up to change all of the lights to red, thus eliminating the problem.
At leat in my state, the emer vehicles do not have to stop on the red signal ( but they do slow down a bit ). But you still have to deal with the places that allow "right on red" and in some cases with one way steets, "left on red".
The signals can also be set up to change upon detection of the white light strobe on the emer vehicle, or upon hearing the siren "yelp". Neather of these works really well on a private vehicle....
Oh, and it's a simple circuit to build these. An infrared emmitter in the proper range and power, and an oscillator circuit to flash the IR at about 18 HZ.
The electric drive motors of a car like this, but instead of a big battery, have a highly efficient gas turbine engine that runs a generator, and have it run the electric motors.
You have the GT run at a constant RPM, and a smaller battery that is used for saving the regenerated electricty from stopping ( dynamic braking ). It also provides the startup power to get the turbine up to speed before it lights off.
Volia! Much longer range than the regular electric car, and much more efficient than a standard IC engine.
"I think you're confusing China with North Korea in their motivations and temperment."
No, North Korea is just China's tool. Once China is ready to invade Taiwan, they'll sick NK on SK to pin down the USA, so that we will not have the resources needed to help Taiwan. ( Not that our sorry ass kissing politicians would do anything anyway. After all, China invaded and occupied Tibet and we've done nothing about that. )
Umm. No, it's not good to see. It's a horrible sight, actually. It's not the "spirit of adventure" by any means. It's more like the "desire of domination".
You see, the "space race" the communist chinese have in mind is to see how fast they can get nuclear warheads into orbit above the USA, and how fast they can get a base on the moon, also armed with nuclear weapons.
Indeed, we should take note of this, and try with all of our resources to stop it.
"This idea won't fly. The reason is simple: money. On landlines it costs nothing to receive a call"
Beg pardon? Last time I checked, the phone company wasn't providing me with free phone service, nor did the store hand me my phone for free either. I pay a monthly flat rate bill for having the phone. If I get one call, then that call cost me the total for my bill. If I get 100 calls, then each one cost me 1/100th of my bill. So ( (Calls from TM's / total calls ) * Phone bill = Cost for each call )
Not to mention the cost of my time in answering the call.
"I don't fear the loss of privacy, because there is no privacy in public spaces. I do like the idea that any would be wrongdoer does not know whether he is being watched or not."
The problem is that it depends on the definition of "wrongdoer", and who is making that determination....
Hendrix was tremendously popular even before his death, recognized as a giant by both the music listening public and his fellow artists, and rightly so. Using him is a poor example of your point...
"As far as I'm concerned, the last piece of quality put out by Disney was "The Lion King" and that was full of violence. (btw, Nemo doesn't count... Disney paid for it, but Pixar created it)."
And even that borrowed liberally from a certain japanese cartoon, though disney would never admit it. ( there is debate on both side of this however )
Sitting on top of my bass amp, for the last couple of years. Works very well. Can make me sound like anybody, pitch correction, chorus and Male / Female harmonies with subtle variations, and can shift my voice to the key that's being played by the keyboard player. It's called a voiceprisim+

"Right now, I'm looking into spending $1,000 for a wide-screen HDTV projector that I can hook-up to my computer, then invite friends over every couple of weeks to watch a new movie on DVD. Who gives a damn if you have to wait a few months? Not like seeing it that much earlier is going to make your life better for those few months."
The way things are going, the MPAA will soon have it made illegal to show the movie to anyone not in the household that bought it!
News flash: Some people can actually walk and chew gum at the same time...
Only need to look at it as often as I look in my rear-view, and that takes my eyes off the road as well. A heads up display would be nice to have though.
I want one of these that I can have it fly in front of my car, about a mile ahead, and send video back to me so I can spot the stormtroopers hiding in the median and on the sides of the road. What kind of range does it have? ( and what's the top speed? )
They're already prepared to send a mission up to attach a propulsion unit to it, just to burn it up in the atmosphere! Why not just move it to another location?
if anyone has thought of them sending up a mission and grabbing the telescope, and hauling it to the ISS and attaching it to the station? It could then have maintainance done by the station crew, parts delivered along with the regular flights to the ISS, and would keep on giving us great information for many years to come.
If people insist on backwards compatibility on their hardware and software, then it's not going to advance much at all, if any.
The real jump comes once the direct interface from computer to the human brain ( ocular nerve, audio nerve, etc. ) is available to people at a low cost. Robert
Ahh. You missed the obvious! It would have worked better like this:
"I don't know how much my music teacher will like it; he seems like more of a C# kind of guy."
See! Much better!
And, just to stay sort of on topic. I couldn't care less about NET. Why did thay have to invent yet another language when they should have just built upon what they already had and just fixed it's problems?
I have seen websites use this method, by listing an e-mail address and then mentioning that the subject of the mail must include a certain word or phrase to avoid being deleted.
Personally, I dislike using a web form to e-mail a company, mostly because they put a lot of "required" fields in them.
My filter works 100% of the time. If the mail does NOT include a certain series of letters and numbers, then the mail is deleted. The people that e-mail me know to include that in the mail, so their stuff gets through. Of course, if you want to subscribe to lists, then this sort of thing won't work.

once we get the capability to hard-wire into the optical nerves leading to the brain, and do it fairly cheaply ( and reliably ).

Such as Bone, Cerebus, Ghost in the Shell, and so forth, you'll see that Marvel is the AOL of comics.

If they hijack a regular passenger plane. If they hijack a CARGO plane, then that's a different story!
Also, what if one of the pilots does it intentionally?
Never say never.
be doing business with the chinese government anyways! You might as well just go ahead and cut your own throat.
I don't have salt on my kitchen table...

Not that it would stop people from having weapons & wars. They'd just build the weapons out of non-iron materials...

So get used to temps going up and down... After all, the polar regions were pratically jungles at one point in time. It'll happen again eventually.
