Pluto is losing it's planetary status because it has not cleared its neighborhood around it's orbit.
I had read that b/c Pluto crosses orbit with Neptune, and of course hasn't "cleared" Neptune away, it is not a planet.
However, Neptune has not "cleared" Pluto from its orbit either no??
So why is Neptune still a planet?
Are they saying that Pluto needs to clear more of its own neighborhood, like the Kuniper Belt? Does that mean it will eventually become a planet in millions of years?
I can clearly see how if someone came in with no experience and they had a cert you might say, "Whatever, you just studied for the test."
But if you had 2 candidates that were equally experienced, equally able to prove their ability, etc. and one of them had a cert, I would give that guy the edge b/c it shows that they were willing to put in some time and money studying for it (for something in their field).
I think it shows that they actually care about themselves and their career to some extent. Much like a masters degree except to a lesser extent.
Would people out there really punish someone for going out and getting certified?
deus ex machina? Doesn't sound like they know what they are talking about.
One way to use deus ex machina is to describe something that appears to solve an impossible problem. So I guess if you call searching the internet an impossible problem, Google could be "deus ex machina", but it's supposed to be used like "Bill knew his life was over, he would never repay his new debt and would spend the rest of his life in poverty. But then he won the lottery and lived a great life! The end!" deus ex machina.
Is AllPeers FireFox's P2P "Killer App"?
The answer is no.
Why no? How about why yes?
No one is going to care about this extension.
No one is going to decide to switch because of it.
This isn't going to matter at all.
How can anyone even pretend that this type of extension is going to be the "killer app" to cause a large move toward Firefox?
This same guy probably thinks that linux just needs a similar "killer app" and Windows will be done for.
Gimme a break.
How come when the article on slashdot is about "Ajax sucking" it's a Microsoft thing, and yet when the articles talk about how cool Ajax is, its a Google thing (GMail and Google Suggest come to mind)?
The Exchange WebMail client is nothing short of amazing. I don't really care if some stuff doesn't work in older or even in non-IE browsers. For me and the company I work for, it is fricking amazing and it couldn't do what it does without loads of Ajax.
"saving them and the hospitals they work for thousands of dollars in expensive equipment"
And yet, at the same time costing patients millions in unnecessary procedures due to the fact that their Doctors were trying to look at medical records of their fricking IPods.
This has to be some kind of joke right? I mean... if not, I could totally write a firmware upgrade for the original Gameboy systems. The Doctors could play Tetris between killing patients! It would be sweet! Has anyone though about Lite-Brites? There is a real market here!
Mini Discs are way better than tapes or CDs (they still are)
Sony's MP3 Walkman was to kill the IPod, but they made you convert from MP3 to their own music format. (stupid)
The only success they have had with this type of move is their split with Nintendo to make the playstation. Aside from that, their track record shows they will lose this battle.
"it was conceived as a driving simulator for old farts like myself"
No kidding! This guy is driving on the wrong side of the road! Get that old geezer of the road before he plows through the local farmers market!:)
No kidding!!
And as for the 300kph... that ball was moving at what, like 10 kph?
If this is supposed to wow anyone, I guess I have fastly overestimated where were are technology wise.
I remember watching something about a guy building a robot to play ping pong, and that was like 10 years ago.
I noticed you used the singular and not the plural when you said "... that cute girl in the IT department".
I'm guessing you did this on purpose, as there really is only 1 cute girl working in IT today (hint: west coast!).
Once in a while I have some connectivity problems, but I have to say my expectations were exceeded on this product.
As a consultant, this thing pays for itself in 1 day of taking the train downtown and back.
As I write this I am sitting at a Borders, where I *used* to pay for the TMobile Hot Spot wifi, listening to streaming audio, connected to a corporate VPN and working away.
I am even thinking of switching my PocketPC on TMobile to Verizon to get the faster data access speeds on my PPC as well!
Who hates Bush more...
a) People around the world that have to deal with this idiot, and his crappy policies that have global reach
or
b) People in the US who have this guy representing our country around the world... and there is nothing we can do about it.
While I would agree that some IP policy can be overboard, the basic reason for IP is a necessity for innovation.
Why would anyone spend money to create something new if it could just be ripped off by anyone w/ nothing better to do that reverse engineer their ideas?
When companies make products that are supposed to have a lock-in, don't you think they take it into account when creating their pricing?
e.g. You can go to Circuit City this week and pick up a TiVo for free after rebate (www.slickdeals.net). If you could simply point TiVo's subscription service to XMLTv or another free location, do you think TiVo would still offer the deal on their PVR?
DRM sucks, and lock-in sucks, but that doesn't mean companies won't do it.
I still have my crappy Archos jukebox while all my friends (wife included) own IPods. Meanwhile Sony built a total IPod killer, and made it so it will only play sony's music format... thus no one will ever buy it.
Maybe as more customers become "Tech savy" they will, as a mass, start to move away from products that have lock-in, I sure hope so. But in the mean time, the problem is the abundance of dumb consumers, not IP policy.
I was going to reply with the "we use mm.dd.yy because you speak it as April 10th 2005" argument, but everyone else has already done that.
So, let me pose this question. Why does the military NOT use the normal US convention of saying "April 10th 2005". To them it is "10 April 2005".
Notice I didn't say "The Tenth", or "Tenth Of". It's simply "Ten April 2005".
On another note: Nothing about the calendar(or the clock) makes sense. Ok you are locked into 365 days / year, but why 12 months? Why some have 30 some have 31 and Feb has 28? Why 12 hours on the clock and 24 hours in the day?
12 is a better number to base your system off than 10 in my opinion because it can be divided into equal halfs, quaters, thirds. Base 10 can only do 1 of those (.5).
So, if you accept that we live in a 10 base world, and that people are not going to switch to a 12 base system, why not have a 10 based calendar and clock?
Are you serious?
You are having a tough decision between 2 jobs where 1 pays you 3 times the salary?
Why not take the higher salary, work for 5 years, and then you can take next 10 years off and get a handful of degrees?
OMG, I totally had this idea years ago.
A 10 hour day, 100 minutes / hour, 100 seconds / minute.
No time zones (why bother)? Instead of saying some show starts at 8:00 EST,7:00 CST. You could just say it is on at 8:00. Each location would treat "8:00" different. So if you lived in Europe, your day might start at 1:00, which in the US your day might start at 4:00.
There would be no "What time is it in London", it would be the same time at every point on earth, each region would just alter when they decide to start their day. If you lived in Chicago, and a business in LA says that it closes at 8:00, the person in Chicago would just have to call before 8:00 Chicago time, because LA would be on the same time zone schedule. No time zone conversions needed.
We can't even switch to metric units here in the US. People are too stupid here.

I have had a 6GB Sansa e260 for a month+ and really really like it.
i ew.aspx
I think it blows the ipod away
Here is a short review I wrote up last month:
http://www.chrismay.org/2006/07/15/MySansaE200Rev
It's time for another installment of: can you guess the year?
We give you 3 newspaper headlines and you try to guess the year. Ready?
1) Renewed tensions in the middle east spark violence
2) Republican accused of ethics violations
3) Gas prices could rise says analyst
4) Linux still to complicated for the avg user.
Can you guess the year?
How dead is it?
It's so dead, that recently
http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/
But sure, Microsoft is dead in the water.
Hey, I heard they just released a special pink IPod!! Apple is really going places!
I can clearly see how if someone came in with no experience and they had a cert you might say, "Whatever, you just studied for the test."

I played Division 1 and a few low level pro tennis tournaments.
I also play HL and CS a ton. You can't compare playing tennis with any video game. Give me a break.
If you can't see the difference, then you need to look yourself in the mirror and make some changes in your life.
That was my first thought as well.

Cleary the French Police must have seen it and decided to switch!!

Unlike Java... there are lots of people looking for C# developers

... that 2 million Mac users have converted to Windows this year.
Mwahahahahaha!

Does no one remember history?
Betamax is way better than VHS (still is)
Mini Discs are way better than tapes or CDs (they still are)

I guess you can say the same about a college diploma right?
As Will Hunting said "You can get the same education (as at Harvard) for a dollar fifty in late fees at the libraray."
"it was conceived as a driving simulator for old farts like myself" No kidding! This guy is driving on the wrong side of the road! Get that old geezer of the road before he plows through the local farmers market! :)

How easy would this be??
yyyy.ddd.hh.mmm.sss
Today would be:
2005.98.05.31.05
10 hours / 1 day
100 minutes / hour
100 seconds / minutes
With this modified system, what we think of as a "second" would only be 15% different from what we call a second now.
Whatever... the damn stupid souther state americans could never survive if we changed to the metric system, so this type of change could never happen.
Maybe if we made the case that Jesus loves the metric system?! It could work!
Are you serious? You are having a tough decision between 2 jobs where 1 pays you 3 times the salary? Why not take the higher salary, work for 5 years, and then you can take next 10 years off and get a handful of degrees?
You did the right thing!
Microsoft forces people to use their tools and environment when developing software!
Besides, I think history will show that siding with Microsoft is the worst thing you can do for your self or your business.
By the way, anyone out there looking to hire a Novell network admin?? Please?!?! I also have experience with OS/2 Warp!
