a) 1996 - Gore/Clinton tax *your* phone bill to "put internet on every school"
b) Any school can spend whatever money and get the ERATE fund to reimburse the school
Waste and abuse happens because this tax should not even have existed to begin with. If school districts had to spend their own money, based on *local* taxation, this sort of careless purchasing would not happen.
You vote for politicians who introduce taxes, you bring this upon yourself.
iTunes AAC (mpeg 4)
- burn it unlimited times to unlimited CD's
- back it up to HD, to CD, to DVD, to floppy, if you must
- copy it to unlimited iPod's
- copy it to unlimited PCs, play it on up to 5 simultaneously
- stream it to up to 5 machines from one Mac or PC
- hook it wirelessly with lossless audio via optical connectors to your home stereo with Airport Express
Copy-Protected Optical Media
- play it in only one place, once at a time
- scratch it once, lose it forever
- repeat after me: it is not a CD if it is not Redbook
Collins is correct that whereas some people prefer the Konqueror-based Safari, others will prefer the Mozilla-based Firefox or Camino. Of course, there are further options, such as Netscape 7.1 (Mozilla), Opera, etc.
Personally, I love Safari, other than the problem with a handful of sites, such as Citibank's online banking, that only work with Camino.
This tax introduced a moral hazard: it is easy, through carelesness or corruption, to over-spend this megafund money and not suffer any consequences.
There have been 2 convictions, but there are tens of thousands of schools.
The issue is, is the country better off with or without the $60 yr tax per household? I say this money would be better used by the people than by faceless ERATE.
(approx. $1.65 per line x (2 lines + 1 cell) x 12 mos. = $60 per year >>> all households, including THE POOR)
It is the *propellant* that blew up, not the nuke!
In fact, the nuke flew 600ft as a result of the *chemical* accident, with NO CONSEQUENCES. This is a testament to all the failsafes built into untriggered nuclear bombs.
Bruce... what's wrong with you? Still mixing up energy with armament?
The only thing that can lower your monthly out-of-pocket is less taxes or more competition.
a) No fine print ---print will be larger, as it is today on credit card offers
b) Separate "tax recoveries" ---tax recoveries will be included in overall price or will be separated. Have you noticed how car dealers separate the "destination fee?" ---yep. You still pay it.
Can't believe legislators waste taxpayer money on writing these sort of useless laws.

You are right! All those millions of automobiles are a product of my imagination!
Because the railroads, which were the most powerful economic entities of the late XIX century, never let the auto develop!
Maybe once I let go of all my conspiracy theories, I will be able to again see the railroads and tramways that today cover the world. Thankyou for letting me see the light.
Sales tax is rarely beyond 7% in the U.S. (and even that is too high). Some states have NO tax (NH, DE, AK, others).
Instead of complaining about the entrepreneurs or charities who want to make music available to you in a convenient manner, please vote por politicians who advocate lower taxes, or kindly shut up.
Look at the chart: in 1966, military spending was 8% of U.S. GDP
In 2001, military spending was 3% of GDP

Everyone knows the U.S. spends less on national defense as a percentage of its wealth than decades ago!
Academic achievement needs be measured across decades, not on a budget spike from 2003, unless you yourself are some sort of ignorant journalist without historical perspective, product of the teacher unions, I guess.
You make a very good point: even with A/C, it is unreasonable that each G5 uses so much power.
Looking again at the article (VT Research Mag):

I am thinking that they probably meant a net increase of just 1.5MW for the 1,100 machines; i.e., the equivalent of 750 homes.
Even this figure seems too large, as each Apple would consume 70% of a home's power. Maybe they installed overcapacity in order to acommodate further expansion?
Oh well, point remains: each click on Google and each posting on/. results in consumption of oil, coal, or nuclear power.
Did anyone think of the electricity needed to power and cool 50,000 servers
The 1,100 Apple cluster at Virginia tech uses 3 megawatts, sufficient to power 1,500 Virgina homes

Yes, it is true: every time you hit Google, you are polluting the Earth.
Some here are jumping to the conclusion that this will pollute less.
Until somebody spends another $1 million of our taxes (read: NSF grant) in doing the net impact calculation, consider this:
1. More land dedicated to grow green tea = less uncultivated land, less *nature*, as they say
2. Fertilizer & pesticide for green tea, and all of the petrochemicals that went into it
3. Fuels and other energies used to sow, harvest, clean, store & transport green tea
4. Chemical processes to refine bioactive compounds out of the tea itself
And I have not even mentioned the fuels used to create the wealth that is going to get taxed in order to pay for the agricultural subsidies that (of course!) are eventually going to be given to growers of green tea.
The IP TTY relay service costs taxpayers $1.39 per minute.
It is available for free to anyone, anywhere, 24x7.
They will even make long distance calls on your behalf.
Is anyone truly surprised that the system gets abused? Think about it. You, the taxpayer, are paying for scams, phone sex, student college jokes, and pizza. Is this how you want your tax dollars spent?

No known commercial spyware for OS X or Linux
RM-TP504
which they discontinued in 2003? and replaced with:
RM-TP1
These were used on the ES line of stereos and amps.

Clearly Sterling is a zealot unable to hold a rational discussion; that's why he's getting so panned by all.
But aren't most wacko environmentalists exactly the same, once you dig below the well-written, scaremonging, press-release façade.

How many pence out of the 99 is going to the Exchequer? Because in Florida, exactly *zero* sales taxes are paid on iTunes purchases.
VAT can be as high as 25% in old Europe

Use OS X
No documented virii, worms, spyware, or trojans to date. Yes, there was a trojan proof of concept. No, it has not infected anyone.
I have been buying and have pretty much substituted physical CD purchases for iTunes Music Store purchases.
Watch me *stop* any and all purchases if prices do increase.
There has not been a single documented virus, worm, trojan, or spyware instance for OS X.
We are talking about a 3-year old OS installed in over 10 million machines.
(Yes, I know someone did a proof of concept for a trojan. No, this prototype has not infected anyone.)
Tell me again why do techies insist on spec'ing 2000/XP at the office?

I live surrounded by woosies who are into the whole oganic/save the planet/Kyoto fashions.
It is great to pull their strings by pointing out that they are great Earth killers, merely by doing things like taking a shower or using Google.
