That's an understatement. Last time I flew somewhere, I was just behind the wing, so I could watch the loading process... At that point I was very worried about the cans of Maple Syrup in my luggage, and quite relieved that my laptop was in a soft case, under the next seat with my camera, and a good book.

If I can't carry the important, expensive, hard to replace stuff with me, then I'll find a different way to travel. Clothing and toiletry supplies, I really don't care. If my luggage gets lost/stolen/destroyed somehow, I can easily replace everything I really need for under $100 at walmart.I wear my suit, and pack casual clothes, so all I'd really have to replace are undergarments, shirts and a pair of jeans for casual wear if I have any free time on the trip. Then there's a razor, shaving cream, aftershave, toothbrush and toothpaste, and a backsack to carry the extras home... If someone wants to steal my dirty clothes on the return trip, the can enjoy them...

The higher grades who could have a legitimate use for a computer had good labs already in place and much easier to maintain than individual laptops! When he takes a vacation, he sets up voicemail notifications to indicate that only his emergency number is available while he's away, then the emergency number is forwarded to my asterisk box, on a line I usually use for outgoing, where I set up a greeting to let the customer know exactally what is happening, before I take the call. When i'm away, I set up Asterisk to play a quick message on my emergency plan, then forward the call to his line. This way, we both keep our clients happy when we are away. End result, every machine had different hardware depending on what the local shops had in stock at bargin prices. The server would hiccup, fart, barf, or keel over daily, the network itself was slower than the old token ring I first had to work on... Eventually I got called in enough times, that the management decided to implement my solution. Within 2 weeks, I had everything stable with reasonably priced industrial grade equipment. About the only thing I agree with in the parent post is Ghost! I like to have standard builts in the bigger offices I support. 10-20 system ordered at a time, identical, so that I only need to have one ghost image for the lot... Some places arn't big enough to justify upgrades like that, so each system has different hardware... in which case, I'll usually make a ghost disk per machine... For backups... IT's JOB IS TO TAKE CARE OF DATA!!! if you only have a gig or 2 of files to backup, a DVD or 2 a night can work, but when you have 3 TB to backup... I doubt any company would be crazy enough to hire 3 people (one for each shift) to sit there, and burn DVDs... for more than a couple gigs, you need large backup media that doesn't come cheap... I've been playing around with IOMEGA REV drives and like them. If a robot library costs too much, an employe can be tasked with changeing the cartrige when he's on his way out for a break... Sometimes, a few cheap USB drives can do the trick as well, but it's a balancing act to be sure you have enough space, enough media, reliable backups, OFFSITE BACKUPS (had a serverroom fire once that I had to recover from, and the company had kept all backups on a shelf above the servers...) Expensive tapes are convieient, and a proven technology, but cheaper media can work, it's all in the planning.

Then you know exactaly what you are hitting. If you try to swerve a big, long, heavily loaded semi to avoid something that happend suddenly, you risk the cargo shifting possibly causing a much worse accident, sideswiping more vehicules that you didn't see because you reacted quickly and couldn't check blindspots quick enough, and you are risking causing another because you are a lot bigger and blocking other people vision. If you can SAFELY avoid hitting something then definatly avoid it, but sometime its safer to run over the cat (or whatever else is the problem). It still has a chance to move between the wheels.
