I run several old systems.
1)an old 386 with an old legacy sound card patched into the PA system in one shop give employees alerts when their breaks start and finish
2) an old win98SE machine with a load of ram and a good sound card is used for recording sessions for a couple of small bands I do buisness with. Hey, 2k and xp eat up too much memory, and I don't need any of their fancy features for my recording software...
3) an old eurocom laptop runs win98 and office97. My aunt only uses it to check her email and type out the occasional letter. There is some wierd display glitch on that machine and win2k just blanks the screen out.98 works fine
If you are running stable OS (linux, win2k/xp) then you are probably loosing money by shutting them down at night. Employees walk in in the morning, get their coffee, and go to their desk, and hit the power switch... then wait 2-5 minutes before they see their desktop.
It would probably save more money to lock the workstation at night instead of logging out
I also got one of the antenna booster stickers, and noticed improvements in key areas In my office, I used to get no signal at all, but with the sticker, I'm able to send and receive calls. not well, but it works now. In other key areas, I've seen my signal strength increase and the clairity of conversations has improved as well.
If they want to get more ratings, why not do like all the other ST series, and play them on local TV stations! Enterprise is not enough of a reason for me to get a satalite dish, and none of my cable stations (which played every other series) shows Enterprise! I watched the premier at a friends house, but I'm not paying any extra money just for startrek! Hell, the only reason I'm paying for cable at all is that DSL isn't available in my town yet!
hrm, my bank usually just asks for my convienience card number, pin number, (through the phone system menus) then the CSR asks for the value of a recent deposit to confirm that I am who I say I am...
I'm a Hybrid owner (Civic) and I just want a car that will get me around on as little gas as possible, looks good and has plenty of storage space. I don't normally care about how fast my car is able to go, but I always want to know that my car CAN get me somewhere fast if the need should arise.
130MPH is just a little over the top, but I've hit 90MPH before and I'm sure the car could handle another 10 which is more than enough speed for me.
Sure you can get coffee anywhere, but the offices I work in seldom have GOOD coffee. I usually bring in my jumbo mug of Tim Hortons coffee, in the morning, then get a refill at lunch. At least half my day I'm drinking real coffee and not just the grey liquid that comes out of the machines in the office. I'm not always sure it IS coffee coming out.
I purchased a small, cheap CB radio a while ago, and it's wonderful for finding out traffic conditions. Just listen in on the channels that the truckers usually chat on (19 is the main one in my area). Just this morning I heard one guy asking about a slowdown on the highway I take to work, so I immediatly cut across to the secondary road, and was at the office 25 minutes before a co-worker who travels the same section of that road.
Same here, I have one SECURE system (linux on dialup) for my trading and other financial work. Anything that would hurt if it was hacked... Anything that makes little difference (ie. my checking account that's almost always in the negative) and day to day work I do from my workstation (which I regualarly check for viruses and spyware...) But if someone finds out any info on my day to day activities, it's not going to have a large impact on my life.
same here. For the last month I've cleaned about 4 systems a week on average, at $50 bucks a pop, plus about 10 virus infected systems a week at the same price.
I even have regular clients that bring in their systems for a semi-annual checkup (one guy with more money than brains goes for the quarterly checkup ($200/year) just for me to run AVG and Ad-Aware, defrag, clean the temp directories and check to see if anything unexpected still runs after a reboot...
Where I live, during the day, the lights work on timers, and currently they are out of sync. Until mid summer, I could time it almost every morning to hit only the first light red, then get green every time unless I got stuck behind a slow truck. At night, they work of sensors and they work well! I almost alway get to drive through without stopping.
Unfortionaly since mid summer, the lights have been out of sync. I have been trying several different times and speeds, but always hit 2-3 red lights.
There are more things to factor than just proximity to work. I play regularly with 2 different bands, so I've chosen to live in a place that's fairly centeral from the different places I have to go all the time. Where I live is also a lower tax area than where I work,so factor in the driving time, and gas that i burn travelling to work, and I still am paying less/year to live farther away.
Living close to work is fine, but what if you have 2 jobs several miles apart, which one should you live closer to?
That $15/hour really amaizes me... I charge $50 for a system cleanup, when the machine is brought to me, $75 on site, and it generally takes me about 2 hours (on a regular clogged up machine) most of which is watching Ad Aware, and AVG do their magin... After that it's simply a matter of cleanup up any leftovers, purging the temp directorys and any other junk that's sitting around, then unplugging the whole mess, dragging the machine and keyboard outside for a blast of compressed air to degunk the keyboard and liberate the dust bunnies...
Best part is a good afternoon when I have 5 or 6 machines on the go at once... I sometimes make more cleaning up machines at home than I do at my regualar 8-5 job. Pretty soon I'll be looking to work full time for myself.
I work part time for my parents who run a small dairy farm, and I've started my own buisness doing computer repairs. I usually get several systems a month dropped off at my place for virus/spyware removal. Doesn't take that long (at least not that much of my time) and I get $50/machine to boot in safemode, run a virus scan, ad-aware, clean out any shit they miss by hand and crack the case open, and blow the dust out... Of course during summer there are the people who manage to blow out PSU's and modems during thunder storms which I usually make about $30 + parts repairing, and the old ladies who have no clue what they are doing and ask to show them the same simple things over every 2-3 weeks.
>I don't think anyone can work 14 hours a day, 7 days a week.
It's definatly possible. I work 8.5 hours a day at the office on weekdays, plus an easy 4 hours EVERY day for my parents (usually about 12 on the weekends) and usually 2 hours a day for my own company. Sure it's split between 3 jobs, doing different tasks, but the hours are there.
thanks, but I waste enough time tracing down infected systems that attack my server (trying to install old windoze worms on my linux/apache setup) and spamming me, and just reporting them to their ISPs hoping that someone will contact the person responsable for the machine and get them to clean it up, or disconnect it.
First of all, my win2k machine at work gets rebooted every day, since I have to shut it down at night... and it hardly ever fails unless I end up coding something before the first cup of coffee, but in that case, I could probably bring down a linux box just as easily...
My home machines run win2k and go 24/7 my newest ones can easily go a month before rebooting, and even the oldest one tends to survive for about a month.
When it comes to servers, my linux box has been running for 167 days now, and before that it had done about 150. The only reason for the reboot was a technician in the datacenter unplugged the wrong machine... My windows servers that get 2x the attention hardly ever survive for more than 45 days.
I would disagree on that. I have driven a regular civic for a while and could average around 5.5-6L/100KM and just bought a civic hybrid last week, which was slightly used (less than 20000KM) I negotiated the price down to be not that much above the regular civic. I am really impressed with the hybrid technology and the other gas saving features like the econ stop. I spend a decent amount of my time driving in city conditions, with stop lights that don't seem to be syncronized in any way, so I'm constantly idling at them waiting for them to change. With my hybrid, the gas engine completely cuts out when you are at a stop.
I too have signed a stack of agreements that pretty much prevent me from working in the field of the company I'm employed at. On the plus side, I'm a programmer/DBA/tech and the company doesn't deal directly in the those fields. All my work is internal development. Plenty of other industries I can work in...
I personally have nothing against ads that are not intrusive. A banner at the top of the page, or down the right hand side, I see as just content that keeps the site going, and believe it's right for us to view them in order to help the site author(s). Popups, on the other hand... I hate them, expecially the pron sites that have about 10 popups per page, that each spawn their own popups. Of course, using Mozilla helps alot Most of the time, if I see a popup, I grab the host name, and add it to my hosts file (127.0.0.1)
Pretty much the same for me. I told them if they wanted me to work from home, either let me skip the 1hr commute a couple days a week, or provide me with the broadband for after hours work. They chose the broadband (which didn't bother me at all) The only thing was, I just never told them that I already had a DSL line, so I ended up cancelling it and using the company provided cable line instead.
I once received a monitor via UPS, which looked like it had a mop handle shoved through the tube. I've also shipped Maple Syrup to friends of mine, and had it arrive leaking. One shipment actually arrived, cans only, with the tops cleanly cut open. That didn't look like an accident to me...
I've found that being a 5'10 guy, weighing in at 215lbs, with a decent build works quite well. I carry my laptop and junk in an aluminum crash case, and carry it with ease. A person getting close enough to me to take my wallet, or other junk is also close enough to be hit it this weapon, which I'm sure would do some serious damage if connecting with a face...
I was a wrestler in HS, weight trained in college, and have been studying kung fu since then.
I was mugged once while in college, guy walked up flashed a knife at me and said to hand over my wallet. I did, however my hand containing said wallet connected with his nose, and he left quickly, and didn't bother with my offerings.
On a side note, keep only a little cash in your wallet. If you are carrying a lot of cash, spread it out between your pockets. Then if you get mugged, you pull out your wallet and hand over a couple bills without loosing everything you haveon you.

As a programmer, I would be a lot less productive if I didn't have MSDN, google, and newsgroups available to me at all times.
My linux box doesn't have any GUI, so a mouse is quite pointless (pun intended)
