  3. The made-up words were great on Anathem · · Score: 1

When I started reading the book, the made-up words irritated me at first, but once I'd read a little further and started to sort out their meanings I took a step back to consider what effect all these unknown terms had on my experience with the book.

Some of the unknown words described concepts that were new to me, others represented things that I'm totally familiar with. Removing my ability (initially, anyway) to distinguish the two dramatically intensified both the alien and the mundane aspects of Arbre. It was a little bit like reading sci-fi for the first time - as I gradually absorbed these new words I kept getting surprised both by the ways this futuristic world was the same as mine, and by how it was different.

The initial frustration totally paid off for me.

I'm sure this is a good game ... but is it a GREAT game in the LONG term?

I was in the beta with large group of clanmates; interest cycles had a period of two or three weeks for most of us. So by level 25 or 30, we had gotten so bored with a free and technically excellent game that even beta-tester responsibility couldn't keep us going. The mass market is considerably less jaded than most of us, so I don't anticipate seeing the same reaction over the same timeframe, but it will come. A year or two from now, the WoW playerbase will be indistinguishable from EQ's.

Players now expect a higher level of polish to MMORPG titles at launch.

Polish is insignificant next to game design. I played Shadowbane for a year and a half, including beta, and came out with some good memories, despite the bugs, crashing, and incomplete endgame. WoW, despite already having more polish than SB ever did, kept me entertained for all of two weeks.

Scorn is known as a dupe server; some big and organized guilds got deep into the dirty money game. Treachery, on the other hand, was no worse off than any of the other servers.
The primary reason for the bank wipe, IMO, is to limit the effect that guilds will have on the servers they move to. Without the gold to plunk a town down on their first day, they will have to find a place for themselves within the existing system, instead of just jumping in as a brand-new major power.
