That post is BS. Unless his coworker is on an "old" Graphite G4, which is probably the case. I leave my desktop Macs on for days with apps like Maya and AE Pro runing and guess what, they do not crash. I rarely shut off my PB, it's generally on for for more then a month, I just sleep it between usage. Now my PCs, which I have 3 of in this office all runing XP Pro, REQUIRE CONSTANT MAINTNACE!!! This is something the MACS DO NOT REQUIRE!!!

Besides one of my desktop Macs, all the PC hardware is newer and guess what, the hardware isn't the problem, it's Windows. I have nothing against PCs, it's ther OS that I dislike. They make cheap rendering options and game machines. But I rarely use them for any real work, I leave that to my Macs, which aren't using a fundamentally flawed OS like Windows.

  2. Re:The Apple Tax on Forbes Predicts 5% Desktop Share for Apple in 2005 · · Score: 0

What??? Are you saying that somehow a Mac's upgrade for its software and hardware are required, because it's the fashionable thing to do? Err, I don't know where you got that tidbit of info, but it's a complete fallacy. I guess I better throw out my Titanium Powerbook, because it's 2 years old and not in fasion, so it's somehow no longer adequate unless I upgrade it.

Free ugprades for 3-4 years, what bussiness school did you fail out of? 3-4 years is about the average life of a "good" computer now days. The entry level systems and most PCs don't even last that long.

You get what you pay for. Besides a premium for video cards and memory, like "all" retail computer manufactures, all the other components are priced very competively. Especially the G5 towers which are workstation computers. And here's an idea, don't buy the memory from Apple. That's really the only hardware upgrade you'll be dealing with on a Mini, unless you opt not to purchase extras like BT, or a Super Drive in the begining.

And implying that Apple's software upgrades are expensive is a complete joke. Apps like iLife are free with all new Macs and an upgrade to the latest version is only $50 and that's a choice. Apps like Keynote and Pages are only $79 and OSX is only $130 for a complete version change like Tiger. XPPro cost $299 new and the upgrade is $199. All the in between upgrades for OSX, which would be like SP2 are free. And there is nothing remotely close to iLife available for XP.

This so called Apple Tax is a figment of your imagination. A Mini is welll worth its price and mainly because of the software that it includes. That software gives it a major edge over any other computer in its price range allowing it to do more out of the box then systems costing hundreds more. Paying $50 bucks every other year is well worth the cost when it provides an abundance of new features. For everything else, Apple's "free" software updates are frequent and welcome,

You've never owned a Sony device that handles digital audio I'm assuming. All I can say, is what a nightmare. There's a reason Sony is not the leader in this area. The worst digital audio player I've owned is a Sony Clié, (I know it's a PDA, but Sony touted it as being a great MP3 player and included a remote and headphones; ALL LIES!!!) the best, easiest to use and most reliable digital audio player that I've own is an Apple iPod. Sony's cumbersome interface and MP3 hating ways really hurt them. Sony is changing there ways supposedly, so just maybe they'll offer a great audio device that's as friendly and as expansive as an iPod sometime in the future, but until then don't waist your money on something that's all design.

The DS has still sold more, because of it's wider market. But when it comes down to it, neither is a looser, since both are still selling big time.

Back to the drawing boards, Crush!!! Nintendo has already sold about 3 million units. Errrr. Step back from the PSP-Crack-Pipe. Wishful thinking is one thing, but you've jumped off into "La La Land."

A couple of things about your GameCube portable theaory. First of all, Sony replaced the "high quality" screen they showed at E3, with a "cheaper" screeen. Secondly, battery life with the PSP can be quite poor. Just over 2 hours for a heafty game that uses Wi-Fi. So before you critisize, or talk down a system that doesn't even exist, think about what you're comparing it too. And on that note, err there is no such thing as a GC portable and taking advice from you or any other peep at this time is only pure speculation. Or did you learn about the GC portable in La La Land?

Something you are not accounting for, is that most Nintendo peeps already own SPs and since they only recently purchased them, most are waiting for a few more DS specific games to be released, before buying. And guess what, Nintendo is releasing several new titles right when the PSP hits the shelves here in the US. So don't expect a clean PSP sweep anytime soon.

For a pure game machine, the DS wins hands down. For a multimedia machine (That should've had a touch screen.) The PSP wins. But at $249 with Sony's crap headphones and a movie, I'm certainly not going to buy one. Where's the promised $199 price???

And like the original poster mentioned, I'm also seeing many non-gamers buying the DSs.

Multiple buttons rock. My only gripe about Apple's one button mouse, is that it's an additional cost that I would rather do without. Meaning that I buy new Macs every two years or so and the one-button mouse just becomes another dust collector. I would rather have the option not to take the mouse and put that money towards the warranty or something.

And using the control-click on my Powerbook when not using my MouseMan doesn't bother me at all. It's no more work then pressing a secondary mouse button.

I'm thinking about getting this dev kit, if anything it will just be another tax write off.

Talk about not having any software support. OSX on the PPC took a few years to get the support needed and now Apple is in the proccess of moving completely to 64-bit, so that's another few years of porting. Moving to a X86 would be a "TITANIC" step backwards for Apple and would only mean their demise. I own both platforms and respect their strenghts. OSX is made possible because of Apple's control over their hardware and software. I've never seen anything on or for my PC that can even match the quality of software/hardware integration that my Macintoshes offer. So moving OSX to a PC and loosing that integration just does not MAKE ANY SENSE!!!

If you are one that says yes to this port, then you should really consider buying a Macintosh to live along side your PC. And before you spew out some price BS, EDUCATE YOURSELF!!! And because of things like Alti-Vec and GPU acclerated GUIs, Macs by no means are slow. Afterall, owning and using both platforms is not a crime.

*Now I must ramble.* When it comes to stability, I take pride in buying the best components for my PC (For me, that's the fun of owning one,) but even with XP Pro if I do not maintain it, it is no where as stable as my unmaintained Macs. But if I keep my PC maintained then it only falls slightly short of my Macs. But then again I only use my PC for LAN parties, rendering and Deep Exploration, where as my Macs are on for weeks at a time(Powerbook in particular.) and are used for everything else. On average I have about 5+ apps(Apps like Maya, Photoshop,Cleaner, AEPro FCP Pro, etc...) opened and switch between them continually. Oh and I did switch to my Macs for playing Warcraft3, because I got sick of it crashing every 6 months for no reason on my PC and requiring a system reinstall to keep it happy for the next 6 months or so. And I'm not alone on this, since my "Hardcore PC" friends also experience simlilar issues that are only fixable by a complete reinstall. But SP2 is on my PC now, so let's see if it that helps.

*I need to rant, this is directed at a small percentage of Slasdot users.*

Another thing he missed, is that it's a 64-bit workstation and shouldn't be compared to a standard 32-bit PC when it comes to price. A Dual 850 Opteron, just the workstation mobo(same basic specs as a G5's mobo) and 2 procs costs more then a DP 2.5 G5 and the Mac only needs a monitor to be up and running. So in that case, the Macs actually a great bargain.
