    the consumer would buy is a data file

    you mean raw pcm data, kinda like a wav file, or CD audio.

    and you could create whatever you need

    so basically encode into whatever format you want.
    can't we already have this for quite some time now? most players play only mp3 and wma, so for now, you're stuck with those formats.

    the CD will very likely be surpassed as the album format of choice.

    you still need some media to transfer the original data. the CD will remain.

    i'm sure many geeks will find this interesting, but does this have any practical uses?, i mean seriously, who would buy a mac mini just to put on debian?

    you could make a mini-itx computer for much less, and put debian on that, not to mention it'll be much more fun :).

    really, huh? 5 years ago == start of 2000 == when windows 98, the most unstable OS (until windows ME cames out), was still the most popular OS on the market.

    they put millions of people through half a decade of BSOD's and such. They had no respect, no love. People still make jokes about them to this date even though Win2k/XP is stable.

    Let me ask you, when someone comes up to you and says "I work at Microsoft" , what is your first reaction?

    Software shouldn't be patented. It shouldn't even be copyrighted or trademarked.

    That's like going to a murderer and saying killing isn't moral. Sure, it's true, but it ain't gonna do much.

    If patents pass in europe, i can predict it won't be as bad as in america. Corporate biggies like MS can easily put tons of money in useless crap.

    Heck, if the uspto accepts a patent on a bicycle filed in the year 2000, you know they'll accept any old crap from MS.

    The older version of X in the base system has been hacked up a great deal to really make sure it'll work on as many platforms as possible.

    hmm, i must ask, have these 'hacks' that are required been reported/merged with xorg tree? has there been any collaboration efforts? or has it been modified for quite a while that it would take a lot of work to merge back?

    when will netbsd switch to xorg for its official X.

    i know they have no problem with the new XFree86 license, but there are other reasons. Xorg is the new de facto standard. it has more features, cleaner code, and the best xfree86 developers have moved to xorg. xfree86 will soon be obsolete, it's time they switch.

    what's holding them back? they can still keep xfree86 on as an alternative too.

    Second, Map24 is more complete and more detailed.

    let me elaborate, map24 has detailed canada maps, google has none and thus is not (or rarely) useful for us canadians.

    OTOH, map24 takes a little longer to load, and is a bit slower in panning around

    Q: Alpha channel PNGs: widespread support of these will enable web developers to break new ground in web design. IE -almost- supports it already with glitches. Can we expect support for this in the next version?
    A: We certainly hear the feedback on alpha channel support on PNG. Again at this stage we can't definitely commit to implementation but we are hearing this consistent feedback. Unfortunately the rendering codebase means this is a little more difficult to implement than you might expect but we aren't afraid to take on the difficult issues :-)


    what are they saying, that IE is poorly designed?

    most people can just use the gnome included with slackware. the dropline one has few tweaks (such as the look) , but other than that i wouldn't really bother.

    little guy standing up to the corporate behemoths
    some points:
    - why do all companies have to be evil.
    - does GPL really protect against commerical companies taking the code over other open source licenses? in theory, it should. but many companies probably take GPL code and use it illegally, sometimes it's just hard to know (i know this isn't an argument against the GPL, just something that everyone should be aware of).

    personally i like the BSD license, and don't mind if they take my code, heck they'll probably charge a bomb for a crappier product.

    i'm not trolling against GPL here, just saying the other licenses should get more attention.

    I know you're joking, but that's just plain stealing! you're physically taking property from the store without paying for it. at least if you download it illegally, nobody loses anything (assuming that you wouldn't buy it otherwise, i know i don't at the high prices that some of these CDs sell at)

    that's actually a good point. i've wondered it too. it's just as free as linux.

    i think it's because up to this point, linux has a good name in embedded devices, and freebsd is known to have problems even in some laptops.

    but i do think freebsd should be considered, especially due to it has a potential to have a smaller footprint.

    coudl be something as simple as" hey if we find yoru missing luggage who do we contact?

    that's just wrong. when they give you the boarding pass, they also give you some tags that you would use when finding where your bags are if you lost it. also that is the main purpose of the airline tags you put on your bag with your address/phone#

    it's definitely not new, but also definitely not for luggage purposes.

    Tor did a lot of work on porting gtk and gimp to windows and because of that, today gimp works as good or at least almost as good as it does in unix, and is a great competitor to photoshop.

    Seems that his work payed off for him. Congrats Tor, and keep up the good work.

    Let me tell you, when you start recoring video and storing your DVD's on disk for easy access, not even multiterabyte disks will seem enough.

    This is why i said 'very few'. Only a small percentage of people actually do video editing/storing on their computer.

    there is not much demand for higher capacities (very few people would need >160gb).

    as for reliability, most HD's are acceptable, but you can never fully rely on them to never fail, you must always have a backup system for important data.

    speed is one of the areas which is always welcome for improvement (until of course it reaches the max interface speed, eg 150mB/sec for SATA)
