No vacuum needed from a demonstration standpoint -- just hold it at Holloman as planned: counteracting Earth's 1G for the 180 seconds of the level II part of the competition generally demonstrates the Delta-v necessary to go from the Moon's surface to orbital rendezvous (or the reverse).
This "rules explained" page goes over this concept in a lot more detail, along with more interesting info on the competition.
God, I couldn't agree more. As a kid I used to play poker with a friend who loved to cheat. I could never get that. If you cheated, you didn't win, pure and simple, and I could never understand why that was satisfying to him. I guess he felt that when he won by cheating, it was sort of a "meta-win" or some-such garbage.
Of course with Olympics-level and pro-level sports, there's FAR more at stake than just satisfaction, so I guess I understand how human weakness plays into that more.
Question: what engine is it using? Not bashing at all, just curious.
Broussard: Unreal. I believe we branched off somewhere around the Unreal 2 time when they added static meshes. Since then we've redone the rendering 100% and it's a fully modern engine.
So Broussard says they're using the Unreal/Unreal 2 tech, but that they've redone the rendering 100%. Parse that as you will.

...because your mind is cloaked with artificial man-made ideas...
Wow, I have at last come across the funniest thing I've read on the internet all week. Pot, meet Kettle.
How is it that you are so certain that what a man said (and was subsequently written down by men) roughly a millennium-and-a-half ago during a time when superstition reigned, is the word of Allah? Because they said so? Because your parents said so? Because your peers or people you respect said so? Because a bunch of other people around the globe say so? Because you feel it in your heart/gut? Or did Allah himself come to you and tell you it was true?
Notice that with all of those possibilities except the last one, we're dealing with man-made ideas (it's impossible to prove them otherwise). So, speaking to Allah ourselves, are we?
So unless you have some pretty compelling evidence that Muhammad was really channeling a Creator, I'm afraid you also come across as someone whose "mind is cloaked with artificial man-made ideas."
We all have different experiences, I guess. I find kimchi to both smell bad and taste bad. But, the times I've tried it (yes, "times" plural -- I've tried various kinds in various dishes), it did not give me the green-apple-quick-step. But then, Taco Bell has never done that to me either (nor do green apples, come to think of it).
Even if you believe in sin, it is not your place to judge anyone else. Ever....it isn't our place to call out another person's actions.
So, if someone was torturing and murdering children in your presence, you'd do nothing? After all, it's not your place to judge his actions. Ever.
Either you really believe what you said and you wouldn't do anything about the child torturer/murderer, or you haven't really thought through your conviction.
Sure, if the "somewhere else" was a place where we didn't know where it was, as in, it went off and hid somewhere. Then you can damn well bet the DoD would scour every inch of the Manhattan site for any clues that might help them understand more of the monster's nature to help in any future encounter.
From 3D Realms' George Broussard (as seen on Shacknews): "All the footage apart from the start and end logos was captured via Fraps in game and real-time."
I was tempted to say, "fair enough." But I can't help but think that's kind of like taking a dump in a public restroom, not washing your hands, then saying, "hey, if the next person is concerned about my pathogens, they can wash their hands."
All I can say is that both my grandmother and my sister were sick for about two weeks; fever, chills, etc, after getting the flu vaccine this year.
And I was vaccinated for the flu and did not get sick, with fever chills or otherwise. Your point?
I wasn't vaccinated and I trust my immune system to beat the flu by itself.
And when you pass it on to, say, an older person whose immune system isn't able to beat it, then what? Do you tell them "tough luck"? Oh, yeah... they won't be around to hear you.
That practice bothers me as well; it just sounds so wrong to my ears. However, I admit that I am inconsistent in how I handle it myself, so I try to ignore it now. Here's what I mean: the following sentences sound completely correct to me:
"The FBI is shutting down botnets. They've been cracking down since the beginning of the year."
Yet I just changed from singular to plural between sentences. Would you say it:
"The FBI is shutting down botnets. It's been cracking down since the beginning of the year"?
Maybe you would, but that sounds just as wrong to me as "The FBI are shutting down..."
The change in sweetener wasn't anything that diabolical. Corn syrup was cheaper than cane sugar; that's what it came down to. In 1980, five years before the introduction of New Coke, half the cane sugar in Coca-Cola had been replaced with high fructose corn syrup. By six months prior to New Coke's knocking the original Coca-Cola off the shelves, there was no cane sugar in American Coca-Cola. Whether they knew it or not, what consumers were drinking then was 100% sweetened by high fructose corn syrup.
...into international waters. You don't have to get permission to leave the planet from there...
If you're a U.S. citizen you sure do. FAA/AST governs launches by U.S. citizens no matter where on the planet they launch (see 14 CFR part 413.3)).
The only currently operating sea launch platform I'm aware of is Sea Launch, and their reason for launching there is not to avoid needing a permit (their launches are licensed by AST), but rather because they're able to launch from an optimum position on the Earth's surface and (they claim) it reduces launch infrastructure cost.

Yep, nearly pure ethanol. A real shame, except that it's denatured. Wouldn't want to pay all that extra tax!
Oh, Armadillo will be competing again this year. What remains to be seen is if, once again, they are the only team actually flying.

The engine is actually based on heavily modified Unreal/Unreal 2 tech.

Actually, according to the book Masters of Doom, American joined id shortly after the original Doom's release.

Honest question, why did the Founding Fathers choose the title "president," as in, "one who presides"?
Either you really believe what you said and you wouldn't do anything about the child torturer/murderer, or you haven't really thought through your conviction.
Either way, people like you outright frighten me.

Yep. And 3D Realms has said they'll be following this teaser up with a full trailer eventually. Of course, 3D Realms has said a lot of things.
But there is definitely a difference between a teaser and a trailer, and comparing one to the other is just silly.
From 3D Realms' George Broussard (as seen on Shacknews): "All the footage apart from the start and end logos was captured via Fraps in game and real-time."
This isn't a trailer at all. Just a teaser.

Ah,well... language.
Not according to Snopes:
